Chapter 1
Megan’s POV
“I can’t believe you actually agreed to go, this is amazing.” Wes beamed at me; his smile so big it showed his teeth.
“It’s not like I’m going because I want to, what else could I say.”
Wes rolled his eyes at me.
“Exactly, the Luna personally invited you, how cool is that.”
Shaking my head, I give up. I can’t win this argument. To Wes going to some pack party is the most exciting thing to ever happen.
There was absolutely no way to convince him otherwise. Shuffling through my wardrobe, trying in vain to find shoes to match the Luna’s dress.
“This is useless, I have nothing to match it.”
“Oh, hell no, you are not getting out of this. You finally agreed to go.”
Wes stood his ground, hand on his hips. Eyebrows raised as he waited for me to argue.
There really is no point.
Enjoy yourself, we deserve some fun. My wolf purred.
We have always been so different I sometimes wonder how we can possibly be one.
It’s just a party…
Well, then it should be easy…
Wes stood up and ran out of the door.
Moments later he rushes back in, bright silver heels in his hand. Raising a brow at him, he just shrugged.
“Stole them from Annie, she won’t even notice. Now hurry up and get dressed.”
Rolling my eyes, I do as he says. Smirking as I turn to him.
“I forgot to mention, I have a plus one.”
His eyes widen, his mouth drops open and he growls at me.
“And you waited until now to tell me? Oh, my goddess, I have nothing to wear.” raising my eyebrow, my hands fell to my hips as I wait for him to stop freaking out.
“We both know you have something to wear.”
He huffs at me.
“Nothing new, I can’t go to the Alpha and Luna’s engagement party in old clothes.” I rolled my eyes again before turning to the mirror and applying makeup as he huffs behind me.
“It’s a masquerade, no one’s going to know it’s you.”
“I’ll know.” He grumbled before storming out of the room.
Ignoring him I turned back to the mirror.
The dress was beautiful, and hugged every curve I had. The baby blue fabric made my caramel skin-pop. Even my brown eyes looked brighter.
I silently thanked the Luna for sending it to me. Her note replayed in my head, making me smile.
Megan,
Saw this and thought of you. Please come to this ball, I need backup!
Love Andy x
Ps: a plus one is totally approved, I’m going to need an army.
Thirty minutes later and Wes was running back into the room, in a perfectly fitting blue tux. A blue mask covered his face, his short brown hair slicked back.
“Nothing to wear?” I teased as he rolled his eyes at me. Bowing slightly, he reached out an arm to me.
“My lady?”
Giggling I took his hand, and we walked outside. Getting in his truck before driving to the pack house.
They had outdone themselves. Lanterns lined the drive up to the house, all the way to the ballroom.
The ballroom was lit with the most beautiful tea lights, covering the walls. Everything about it looked right out of a fairy tale. Eyes landed on me and Wes as we walked in, making me eternally grateful for the mask covering my face.
“I can’t believe we’re here.” Wes whisper yelled in my ear. I couldn’t help but smile at my friend, he was so excited.
The Luna and alpha were both on the far side of the room to us, laughing with the beta and his mate.
Andy looked stunning, her purple ball gown flowed around her as she walked, seemingly weightless.
Wes clutched my hand, pulling me towards the dance floor.
“What are you doing? You know I can’t dance.” I whined as he pulls me to him. His arm wrapped around my waist.
Wes was always a good dancer, me on the other hand was awful. After a few minutes of me clumsily tripping over my feet and Wes laughing at me, I finally gave up.
Untangling myself from him, he chuckled again, pulling me closer. I stared at him confused but he just smirked at me before lifting me and placing me on his feet.
“I’m not five.” I whined.
“Maybe, but you dance like a five-year-old.”
I stuck my tongue out at him, which only made him laugh harder.
We stayed on the dance floor for what felt like hours before the smell of orange and pine trees brushed over me, making me freeze.
“You, okay?” Wes whispered.
No, please be wrong.
My wolf started howling in my head and I knew exactly what her next words were going to be.
Mate! She yipped excitedly.
I felt eyes on my back, as footsteps approached me.
Wes was staring at me, worry covering his features. He pulled me closer to him as the footsteps got closer.
A growl sounded behind me, sending a shiver down my spine. Wes bowed his head, his wolf submitting to him.
The stranger went to grab my hand, Wes reluctantly released me, stepping back. His eyes were glued to mine the whole time.
Sorry. He whispered through the link.
I gave him a small smile, not trusting my voice, mental or otherwise.
The stranger took my hand, sparks erupted on my skin as he turned me around.
Not a stranger, our MATE. My wolf growled at me.
He is a stranger, do you know his name?
She huffed but stayed silent.
His hand went to my waist as he swayed, holding me against him.
I could feel his eyes burning holes in my skin, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him.
After a few seconds of silence, he reached out, putting his finger under my chin. Lifting my head forcing me to look at him.
My eyes connected with his beautiful grey ones, the rest of the world faded away as we stared at each other.
His face was half covered in a black mask but what I could see was gorgeous. From his black hair slicked back from his face to his strong jawline. He was at least a foot taller than me, in a black tux.
But those eyes…
They’re mesmerising, almost like a thunderstorm. Endlessly powerful, getting lost in them would be way too easy.
His hand goes to his face, and he removes his mask. My breath hitches in my throat as his face comes into full view.
It can’t be.
He smiles at me as he reaches out to my face. My senses come back as his fingers graze my face, going to take my mask off.
Without thinking I turn and run.
Ignoring my wolf’s howls or the growling coming from behind me.
He can’t be my mate.
Grayson O’Connor cannot be my mate.
