The Seat Beside You
The first bell rang just as Amelia Carter hurried through the school gates. “I'm late. I'm actually late,” she whispered, looking at the time on her phone. She tightened the strap of her backpack and rushed toward the main building, hoping her English teacher hadn't already locked the classroom door. Monday mornings were never Amelia's favorite. She preferred quiet mornings, a warm breakfast, and enough time to prepare herself for the week. Unfortunately, that morning had given her none of those things. When she finally reached her classroom, she took a deep breath before opening the door. Everyone turned to look at her. “Good morning,” Amelia said quietly. Her teacher raised an eyebrow. “Nice of you to join us, Amelia.” A few students laughed. “Sorry, ma'am.” “Take your seat.” Amelia quickly walked to her usual desk beside the window. She dropped her bag onto the floor and tried to look invisible. Her best friend, Chloe, leaned toward her. “You're lucky she didn't give you detention.” “I know,” Amelia whispered. “Don't remind me.” Before Chloe could respond, their teacher cleared her throat. “Class, we have someone new joining us today.” Amelia looked up. A boy stood beside the teacher. He looked around the classroom calmly, holding a backpack over one shoulder. He had dark hair, warm brown eyes, and a quiet confidence that immediately made several students start whispering. “This is Ethan Brooks,” the teacher said. “He recently moved here, so I expect everyone to make him feel welcome.” Ethan gave the class a small smile. “Hi.” “There's an empty seat beside Amelia,” the teacher continued. Amelia's eyes widened. Chloe immediately looked at her with a grin. “No,” Amelia whispered. Chloe covered her mouth to hide her laughter. Ethan walked toward the empty desk beside Amelia and sat down. “Hi,” he said. “Hi.” There was an awkward silence. Amelia opened her notebook and focused on the lesson. She wasn't interested in making a big deal about the new boy. She had enough things to think about—schoolwork, her upcoming exams, and the university applications she had started worrying about. But after a few minutes, Ethan leaned slightly toward her. “Did I miss anything important?” Amelia glanced at his notebook. “Not really. She's just explaining the assignment.” Ethan nodded. “Thanks.” “No problem.” She returned to her notes. A few minutes later, a small piece of paper landed on her desk. Amelia looked at it. It was from Chloe. You two look cute already. Amelia immediately looked across the room. Chloe was trying not to laugh. Amelia rolled her eyes and folded the note. She wasn't going to let Chloe embarrass her. When the bell finally rang, everyone began packing their bags. Ethan stood up. “Do you know where the science lab is?” “Yeah. It's in the next building.” “Would you mind showing me?” Amelia hesitated for a second. “Sure.” They walked out of the classroom together. The hallway was crowded, with students rushing between classes. Ethan stayed beside her as they made their way through the noise. “So,” he said, “how long have you been at this school?” “Since the beginning of secondary school.” “Then you must know everyone.” “Definitely not everyone.” He smiled. “You seem like you know your way around.” “I've just been here long enough.” They reached the science building. “That’s the lab,” Amelia said, pointing toward the door. “Thanks.” “You're welcome.” For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Ethan smiled. “I guess I'll see you in class.” “Yeah.” Amelia walked away. She didn't understand why she suddenly felt nervous. It was just a conversation. Just a new student. Just a normal Monday. At least, that's what she told herself. Later that afternoon, Amelia sat under a tree in the school courtyard with Chloe during lunch. Chloe immediately started talking. “So... Ethan.” Amelia sighed. “What about him?” “You like him.” “I met him this morning.” “Exactly. And you've already walked him to the science lab.” “He asked me for directions!” Chloe laughed. “Relax. I'm just teasing you.” Amelia shook her head, smiling. Across the courtyard, Ethan sat with two boys from their class. For a brief moment, he looked toward Amelia. Their eyes met. Amelia quickly looked away. Chloe noticed. “Ohhh.” “Don't start.” “I didn't say anything.” “You were about to.” Chloe laughed again. Amelia smiled, but she couldn't stop herself from glancing back. Ethan was still looking in her direction. This time, he smiled. Amelia smiled back before turning away. Neither of them knew it yet, but that simple moment would become the beginning of a story they would never forget. Sometimes, love doesn't announce itself. Sometimes, it begins with a seat beside someone new. Sometimes, it begins with two hearts quietly meeting before either person realizes it.
