The Secret in the Blue Notebook

1872 Words
The rain had stopped by the time morning arrived. Drops of water still clung to the windows, reflecting the pale sunlight that slowly filled the room. Outside, the streets were quiet, washed clean by the night's storm. Amelia opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. For a few seconds, she couldn't remember what had woken her. Then she heard it. A soft vibration. Her phone. She reached for it on the bedside table and looked at the screen. One new message. Unknown Number. Her eyebrows pulled together. She unlocked the phone. Unknown: You shouldn't have gone there yesterday. Amelia froze. Her heart seemed to skip. She read the message again. Then again. She hadn't told anyone where she'd been. Yesterday, she and Daniel had visited the old bookstore across town. It had been an ordinary afternoon—or at least, that's what she had thought. She quickly typed a reply. Amelia: Who is this? She waited. Nothing. She tried again. Amelia: How did you get my number? Still nothing. Amelia sat up. A strange feeling settled over her. It wasn't exactly fear. It was the feeling that someone knew something about her that they shouldn't. She got out of bed and walked toward the window. Across the street, a black car was parked near the corner. She stared at it. The car didn't move. Amelia stepped closer to the glass. A moment later, the car drove away. Her phone vibrated again. She nearly dropped it. Unknown: Don't trust everything you're being told. Her breathing became uneven. Before she could respond, another message appeared. Unknown: Ask Daniel about the blue notebook. Amelia's eyes widened. The blue notebook. She knew exactly what they meant. Daniel had shown it to her two days earlier. He had called it an old family notebook and had quickly changed the subject when she asked about it. Why would a stranger know about it? Amelia immediately called Daniel. He answered after several rings. "Hey," he said, sounding sleepy. "Good morning." "Daniel." Something in her voice made him sit up. "What happened?" "Where are you?" "At home." "I need to see you." There was a pause. "Are you okay?" "I don't know." Daniel became serious. "I'll come over." "No." She looked toward the window. "Meet me at the café near the park." "Why there?" "I'll explain when I see you." "Okay." They ended the call. Amelia looked at the messages once more. She took screenshots and placed the phone in her bag. Whatever was happening, she didn't want to deal with it alone. --- Twenty-five minutes later, Amelia arrived at the café. Daniel was already there. He stood when he saw her. "You look worried." "I am." They sat at a small table near the window. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Amelia placed her phone on the table. "I received these this morning." Daniel picked up the phone. He read the first message. His expression changed. Then he read the second. And the third. When he reached the words blue notebook, he stopped. Amelia watched him carefully. "You know something." Daniel didn't answer. "Daniel." He placed the phone on the table. "Where did you hear about that notebook?" "The message told me." His face became pale. "Whoever sent this knows about my family." "That's what I'm afraid of." Daniel leaned back. "I thought that notebook was gone." Amelia frowned. "Gone?" "My grandfather kept it for years. It contained old family records, letters, photographs... things that weren't supposed to be shared." "What kind of things?" "I don't know." "You don't know?" "My father found it after my grandfather died. He told me never to go through it." "Then why did you show it to me?" Daniel looked down. "I didn't mean to." Amelia waited. "That day at the house, I was looking for something else. I found the notebook inside an old box. I opened it because I was curious." "And?" "I saw names." "Whose names?" Daniel hesitated. "People I recognized." "Family?" "Some of them." Amelia leaned forward. "What does that mean?" "I don't know yet." Silence filled the space between them. Then Daniel's phone rang. He looked at the screen. His expression immediately changed. "Who is it?" Amelia asked. Daniel didn't answer. The phone stopped ringing. A second later, a message appeared. Daniel opened it. His eyes widened. Amelia noticed. "What?" He turned the screen toward her. There was only one sentence. Unknown: She knows about the notebook now. Amelia stared at the screen. Then another message arrived. Unknown: You were warned. Daniel quickly stood. "We're leaving." "Why?" "Because whoever this is knows we're together." Amelia gathered her bag. They walked out of the café. Neither noticed the person sitting at a table near the back. Someone who had been watching them. --- The drive back was quiet. Daniel kept checking the mirrors. Amelia noticed. "You think we're being followed?" "I don't know." A few minutes passed. Then Amelia looked behind them. A silver car had been driving in the same direction for several blocks. "Daniel." "I see it." They turned onto another street. The silver car continued straight. Daniel exhaled. "Maybe it was nothing." Amelia nodded. But she couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed. They arrived at Daniel's house. Before getting out of the car, he turned toward her. "I want you to promise me something." "What?" "If you receive another message, don't respond." "Why?" "Because we don't know who we're dealing with." Amelia nodded. "Okay." They walked inside. Daniel went directly upstairs. Amelia stayed in the living room. She looked around. Everything seemed normal. Family photographs lined the walls. A large clock ticked quietly. Sunlight entered through the windows. Yet somehow the house felt different. As if it were keeping secrets. Then Amelia noticed something. A photograph on the wall was slightly crooked. She walked toward it. It showed Daniel's grandfather standing beside several people. Amelia studied their faces. One person caught her attention. A woman standing at the far end of the group. She looked strangely familiar. Amelia reached toward the photograph. Before she could touch it, Daniel came downstairs. "What are you doing?" She turned. "Who is she?" Daniel walked over. His expression changed instantly. "I don't know." "You've never seen her before?" Daniel stared at the photograph. "I've seen this picture before." "Then who is she?" "I don't remember." Amelia looked at him. "You don't remember?" Daniel shook his head. Then something fell from behind the photograph. A small envelope. It landed on the floor. Both of them stared at it. Daniel slowly picked it up. There was no name on the front. Only a date. September 7, 2012. Amelia looked at Daniel. "Open it." He hesitated. Then carefully tore it open. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Daniel unfolded it. His eyes moved across the words. He stopped. "What does it say?" Amelia asked. Daniel didn't respond. She stepped closer. He finally handed her the paper. There were only a few handwritten lines. Some stories are buried for a reason. Some promises were never meant to be broken. And some hearts were separated by a truth no one was ready to face. At the bottom was one final sentence. When the blue notebook is opened, everything begins again. Amelia looked up. "Daniel..." "I know." Neither of them spoke. Then Daniel's phone vibrated. They both looked at it. Another message. Unknown: Now you understand why I told you to stay away. Daniel immediately grabbed the phone. "Who are you?" he typed. The reply came almost instantly. Unknown: Ask your mother. Daniel froze. Amelia noticed. "Daniel?" He slowly lowered the phone. "My mother." "What about her?" Daniel looked toward the stairs. "I think we need to talk to her." --- They found Daniel's mother in the kitchen. She was preparing lunch when they entered. She smiled. "You're both home early." Daniel didn't smile back. "Mom, I need to ask you something." She looked at him. "What is it?" He placed the photograph on the table. Her smile disappeared. She stared at it. Then at her son. "Where did you get this?" "It was hanging in the living room." She slowly sat down. Amelia watched her carefully. "Who is the woman in the picture?" Daniel's mother didn't answer. "Mom." She closed her eyes. "Her name was Elena." "Who was she?" Another silence. "She was someone your grandfather knew." Daniel frowned. "That's all?" "No." His mother looked at him. "That's not all." Amelia felt a chill run through her. "What happened to her?" Daniel's mother looked toward the window. "She disappeared." "When?" "Years ago." "Why?" "I don't know." Daniel shook his head. "Mom, someone is sending us messages about the notebook." Her face immediately changed. "What messages?" Daniel showed her the phone. She read them. Her hands began to tremble. "Where is the notebook?" Daniel didn't answer. "Daniel, where is it?" "I have it." His mother stood. "You need to get rid of it." Amelia stared at her. "Why?" "Because some things should remain in the past." Daniel shook his head. "No. Someone is clearly trying to scare us. I want to know the truth." His mother looked at him with sadness. "Sometimes the truth doesn't bring peace." "Maybe not," Daniel replied, "but lies don't either." His mother said nothing. Daniel turned toward the stairs. "I'm going to get the notebook." His mother suddenly grabbed his arm. "Don't." Daniel looked at her. She released him slowly. "You don't understand what you're opening." Daniel's expression hardened. "Then tell me." She looked at him. For several seconds, she remained silent. Finally, she whispered: "Your grandfather wasn't the person you thought he was." The room went completely quiet. Amelia looked at Daniel. Daniel looked at his mother. "What does that mean?" Before she could answer, the front doorbell rang. Everyone froze. The bell rang again. Daniel slowly walked toward the door. His mother whispered, "Don't open it." He stopped. The bell rang a third time. Amelia looked through the glass panel beside the door. There was no one outside. Daniel unlocked the door carefully. Nobody was there. Only a small package sat on the doorstep. Daniel picked it up. There was no sender. He brought it inside. Amelia stood beside him. "What is it?" Daniel opened the package. Inside was the blue notebook. The same notebook they had been talking about. Daniel stared at it. His mother covered her mouth. Amelia stepped backward. A small white card rested on top. Daniel picked it up. He turned it over. Five words were written across it. "You were never supposed to find this." Daniel looked at Amelia. For the first time, neither of them knew what to say. The clock on the wall continued ticking. Outside, the afternoon sky darkened. And somewhere far away, an unknown person was waiting. Waiting for them to open the notebook. Waiting for the truth to finally come out. And Amelia suddenly realized something that frightened her more than the messages. The stranger wasn't trying to keep them away from the truth. They were trying to lead them toward it.If you want, I can continue with **Chapter 17**, where Daniel finally opens the blue notebook and discovers the first major secret.
