The Second Notebook

The blue notebook sat on the table between them. Nobody touched it. For several minutes, the room remained completely silent except for the ticking of the clock on the wall. Daniel stared at the notebook as if it were something dangerous. Amelia stood beside him, her arms folded tightly. Daniel's mother had moved to the opposite side of the room. She looked frightened, but she was trying hard not to show it. Finally, Daniel spoke. "I'm opening it." His mother immediately shook her head. "Daniel, please." "I need answers." "You don't know what you're asking for." "I've been asking questions for years, Mom. Every time I ask about Grandpa, you change the subject. Every time I ask about this notebook, you tell me to forget it." He placed his hand on the cover. "But someone else knows about it. Someone knows things about our family that I don't even know." His mother looked away. Daniel opened the notebook. The first pages were filled with handwritten dates and names. Some pages contained photographs. Others contained short notes. Amelia leaned closer. "These are family records." Daniel nodded. "Some of them." He turned another page. There was a photograph of his grandfather when he was younger. Beside him stood the same woman from the photograph downstairs. Elena. Underneath the picture was a handwritten sentence: Elena was never just a family friend. Daniel stopped. "Mom..." She closed her eyes. Amelia looked at her. "What does that mean?" His mother sat down slowly. "Elena was your grandfather's closest friend." Daniel turned another page. There were several letters. He carefully read the first one. Then another. His expression became more confused with every page. "These letters are from Elena." His mother nodded. "What was she writing about?" "Your grandfather." "About what?" She hesitated. "Something that happened before you were born." Daniel looked up. "What happened?" His mother remained silent. Daniel turned another page. A date was written at the top. September 7, 2012. The exact same date written on the envelope they had found. Daniel's eyes widened. "Mom." She looked at him. "What happened that day?" Her lips parted, but no words came out. Amelia gently touched Daniel's arm. "Maybe we should read it." Daniel nodded. He carefully unfolded the letter. The handwriting was neat and careful. The letter explained that Elena had discovered something about the family that she believed had been hidden for years. But the most important part had been torn away. Only the beginning remained. Daniel stared at the missing section. "Someone ripped this out." His mother nodded. "Yes." "Who?" "I don't know." "You must know something." She looked down. "I know enough to be afraid." Daniel closed the notebook. "Then tell us." His mother took a deep breath. "Your grandfather had a secret." "What secret?" "He had been protecting someone." Daniel frowned. "Who?" She looked at Amelia. Then back at Daniel. "I don't know." "That's impossible." "I was never told everything." "Then what do you know?" She stood and walked toward the window. "Your grandfather believed someone was trying to destroy the family." "Who?" "He never said." "Why?" "Because he thought knowing too much would put us in danger." Daniel looked frustrated. "So he left us with a mystery instead?" "Sometimes people believe silence is protection." Amelia looked at the notebook. "Maybe that's why Elena disappeared." Daniel turned toward her. "What do you mean?" "She found something. Maybe she tried to expose it." Daniel looked at his mother. "Is Elena still alive?" His mother didn't answer. That silence was enough. Daniel's eyes widened. "You don't know." "No." "Nobody knows?" She shook her head. "She vanished." Amelia looked at the notebook again. "Then maybe this is the reason someone has been contacting us." Daniel opened it again. He turned several pages. Near the back, he found a list of names. Some were crossed out. Some had dates beside them. Then he saw one name that made him freeze. His mother's. He looked at her. "Why is your name here?" She walked over quickly. Her face went pale. "Close the notebook." "Mom—" "Now." Daniel didn't move. "Why is your name here?" She stared at the page. "I don't know." "You expect me to believe that?" "I have never seen that page before." Amelia stepped closer. There was another name beneath his mother's. Daniel's name. His own name had been written in the notebook years before he had ever seen it. He stared at it. "How?" His mother couldn't answer. Then Amelia noticed something. There was a date beside Daniel's name. September 7, 2012. Daniel looked at her. "That's my birthday." Amelia's eyes widened. His mother suddenly sat down. Daniel stared at the page. "Why would Grandpa write my name on the day I was born?" His mother covered her face with her hands. "I don't know." But Daniel could tell she was hiding something. He closed the notebook. "I'm going to find Elena." His mother looked up. "Daniel, don't." "I need to know what happened." "You don't know where to start." "I have a name." "And that's not enough." "It is for me." Amelia stepped forward. "We'll find the truth carefully." Daniel looked at her. She gave him a small reassuring smile. "We don't have to solve everything today." Daniel nodded. His mother watched them. Then she said something neither of them expected. "I know where Elena used to live." Daniel turned around. "You do?" She nodded. "She had a small house outside the city. Your grandfather visited her there." "Where?" His mother hesitated. Then she gave him the address. Daniel quickly wrote it down. Before leaving, he looked at the notebook. He wanted to take it with him. His mother stopped him. "Leave it here." "Why?" "Because if someone sent it to us, they know we have it." Daniel thought about it. Then carefully placed it back on the table. "Fine." He and Amelia walked toward the door. His mother called after them. "Daniel." He turned. She looked at him with tears in her eyes. "If you find Elena, ask her one question." "What question?" She swallowed. "Ask her what happened on the night your grandfather disappeared." Daniel froze. "Grandpa disappeared?" His mother immediately looked away. Amelia stared at Daniel. Neither of them had ever heard that before. Daniel slowly walked back into the room. "What do you mean disappeared?" His mother shook her head. "I can't talk about it." "You just said it." "I shouldn't have." "Mom!" She turned away. "Please leave." Daniel stood there for several seconds. Then he finally walked out. --- The drive to Elena's old house was quiet. Daniel kept looking at the address written on the piece of paper. Amelia sat beside him. "Are you okay?" "No." She nodded. "That's understandable." Daniel sighed. "I thought I knew my family." "You knew what they allowed you to know." He looked at her. "That's the scary part." Amelia smiled gently. "Maybe the truth isn't as terrible as we think." "Maybe." He looked through the windshield. "But why would someone send us that notebook?" "Maybe they want us to discover something." "Or maybe they're trying to manipulate us." "That's possible too." Daniel slowed the car. They had reached the neighborhood. The houses became fewer. Trees lined both sides of the road. Finally, they saw the house. It was small and old, surrounded by a low fence. Daniel parked. Neither moved. "Ready?" Amelia asked. Daniel took a breath. "As ready as I'll ever be." They stepped out. The front door was closed. Daniel knocked. No answer. He knocked again. Still nothing. He tried the door. It opened. Amelia looked at him. "That's strange." Daniel slowly pushed it wider. Inside, everything was covered with dust. The house looked as though nobody had lived there for years. "Elena?" Daniel called. No answer. They walked through the living room. There were old bookshelves and several framed photographs. Amelia stopped. "Daniel." He turned. She pointed at a photograph. It showed Elena standing beside his grandfather. But they weren't alone. A younger version of Daniel's mother stood beside them. Daniel stared at it. "Mom was here." "Maybe she knew Elena better than she admitted." Daniel walked toward the photograph. Behind it was another envelope. He pulled it out. This one had his name written across it. For Daniel. His heart began beating faster. Amelia looked at him. "Open it." Daniel carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a short note. Daniel, if you're reading this, then the notebook has found its way back to your family. He looked at Amelia. She read over his shoulder. The letter continued: There are things your family never told you. Don't trust the person who claims to have protected you. Daniel's face changed. "Who is that?" Amelia shook her head. The final line was written beneath it. And whatever you do, don't let them find the second notebook. Daniel looked around the empty house. "Second notebook?" Amelia whispered, "There's another one?" Before Daniel could answer, they heard a sound outside. A car door closing. Both of them froze. Someone had arrived. Daniel quickly folded the letter. "Someone's here." They moved toward the window. A person stepped out of a dark car. Daniel couldn't see their face clearly. The person walked toward the house. Amelia whispered, "What do we do?" Daniel looked around. Then his eyes landed on a narrow hallway leading toward the back door. "Come on." They quietly moved through the hallway. The footsteps grew louder. The front door opened. Someone entered the house. Daniel and Amelia slipped through the back door. They hurried toward the car. Once inside, Daniel started the engine. They drove away. Neither spoke until they were several streets away. Then Amelia looked at him. "Who do you think that was?" Daniel shook his head. "I don't know." He looked at the envelope in his hand. "But now we know something." "What?" "There isn't just one notebook." He looked at her. "There are two." Amelia stared ahead. "And someone knows where the second one is." Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "And I think they're going to do everything they can to make sure we never find it."
