Two Families, One Secret

1411 Words
The next morning, Amelia woke with one thought on her mind. The second notebook. She had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the note they had found at Elena's old house. Don't let them find the second notebook. But who were they? And why was the notebook so important? Her phone buzzed. It was Daniel. Daniel: We need to talk. Come to the park. Amelia immediately got dressed and left. When she arrived, Daniel was already sitting on a bench beneath a large tree. He looked exhausted. "You didn't sleep," Amelia said. "Neither did you." She sat beside him. "What happened?" Daniel pulled something from his jacket. It was a photograph. "I found this in my mother's room." Amelia took it. Her eyes widened. It was the same group photograph they had seen before. Daniel's grandfather. Elena. His mother. But there was someone else standing in the background. A young man. Amelia studied his face. "Who is he?" "I don't know." "Are you sure?" Daniel nodded. "I've never seen him before." "Then why were you looking through your mother's room?" "I wasn't." He paused. "I found this photograph on my bed this morning." Amelia looked at him. "Someone left it there?" "Yes." Her stomach tightened. "Again?" Daniel nodded. "And there was a message." He handed her his phone. The message was from the unknown number. Unknown: You're looking in the wrong place. A second message appeared beneath it. Unknown: The second notebook was never in Elena's house. Amelia looked up. "Then where is it?" Daniel shook his head. "I don't know." A third message appeared. Unknown: Look at the person standing behind them. Amelia looked at the photograph again. The young man. She zoomed in. There was something familiar about his face. "Daniel." "What?" "Look at his hand." Daniel leaned closer. The man was holding a small key. It had a distinctive silver symbol on it. Daniel stared. "I've seen that symbol before." "Where?" "On Grandpa's old desk." Amelia's eyes widened. "So the key could be connected to the notebook." "Exactly." Daniel stood. "We need to go home." "Why?" "Because Grandpa's desk is still there." --- They arrived at Daniel's house less than twenty minutes later. His mother was in the living room. She looked surprised to see them. "You're back already?" Daniel didn't answer. He walked toward the study. His mother followed. "Daniel, what are you doing?" "I need to look at Grandpa's desk." She stopped. "Why?" "Because I think there's something hidden inside it." Her expression changed. Daniel noticed. "You know something." "I don't." "Mom." She sighed. "Your grandfather's desk has been locked for years." "Where's the key?" "I don't know." Daniel pulled out the photograph. His mother stared at it. Her face went pale. "Where did you get this?" "Someone left it for me." She took a step backward. "Who?" "We don't know." She looked at the photograph again. "That's Marcus." Daniel froze. "Marcus?" His mother nodded slowly. "Marcus Hale." "Who was he?" She hesitated. "He worked with your grandfather." "Worked with him doing what?" "Business." Daniel looked at Amelia. "Is he still alive?" His mother didn't answer immediately. "I don't know." Daniel frowned. "You don't know?" "I haven't seen him in years." "Why?" She looked away. "Because your grandfather told me never to contact him again." Daniel looked at the photograph. "Why?" "Because something happened between them." "What happened?" "I don't know all the details." Daniel's voice became frustrated. "Everyone keeps saying that." His mother sighed. "Your grandfather trusted Marcus once. Then something changed." "What changed?" She looked at him. "Your grandfather discovered that someone had been taking information from the family business." "Marcus?" "I never said that." "But you think it was him." "I think you should stop asking questions." Daniel shook his head. "That's exactly why I'm going to keep asking." He walked into the study. The old desk stood against the wall. Dust covered its surface. Daniel ran his fingers along the drawers. "There's no keyhole." Amelia looked closer. "Maybe there's a hidden compartment." They searched the desk. After several minutes, Amelia noticed a tiny symbol carved beneath the edge. The same silver symbol from the photograph. "Daniel." He came over. She pointed at it. He pressed the symbol. A small section of the desk clicked. A hidden drawer opened. Inside was an old silver key. Daniel stared at it. "The same key." Amelia took the key carefully. "What does it open?" Daniel looked around the study. "I don't know." Then he noticed something. A small cabinet in the corner. It had a lock. He walked toward it. The key fit perfectly. Daniel turned it. The cabinet opened. Inside were several old documents, photographs and envelopes. But there was no notebook. Daniel sighed. "Nothing." Amelia pointed toward the back. "Wait." A small metal box sat behind the documents. Daniel pulled it out. The box had no lock. He opened it. Inside was a folded piece of paper. Daniel unfolded it. His eyes moved across the page. "What is it?" He handed it to Amelia. It was a map. A location had been circled in red. At the bottom was a handwritten sentence: The second notebook is where the story began. Daniel looked confused. "Where did the story begin?" His mother suddenly appeared in the doorway. She looked at the map. Then she whispered one word. "Grandmother's house." Daniel turned. "Grandmother?" His mother nodded. "Your grandfather's childhood home." "Where is it?" She gave him the address. Daniel immediately memorized it. But before he could leave, his mother grabbed his arm. "Daniel." He turned. "Please be careful." He nodded. "We will." --- The old house stood at the edge of a quiet village. It was much smaller than Daniel expected. The paint had faded. The windows were dusty. But the structure was still strong. Daniel and Amelia walked toward the front door. The door was unlocked. They entered. Inside, the air smelled old and dusty. Photographs covered the walls. Daniel walked slowly through the hallway. "This place feels familiar." "You've been here before?" "No." He stopped. "But somehow I remember it." Amelia looked at him. "Maybe your mother brought you here when you were little." "Maybe." They entered the largest room. A fireplace stood against the wall. Above it was another photograph. Daniel's grandfather as a child. Beside him stood an older woman. His grandmother. Daniel smiled slightly. "She looks kind." Amelia nodded. Then she noticed something behind the photograph. "Daniel." He moved closer. The photograph was covering a small opening in the wall. Daniel carefully removed it. Inside was a wooden compartment. There was something inside. A notebook. Blue. Daniel's heart began beating faster. "The second notebook." He carefully pulled it out. Unlike the first notebook, this one looked much older. The cover was worn. There were no markings. Daniel opened it. The first page contained only one sentence. If you've found this, then the truth has survived. Amelia read it over his shoulder. They turned the page. A list of names appeared. Daniel's eyes moved down the page. Then he stopped. One name made his heart drop. Elena Bennett. Amelia stared. "Bennett?" Daniel looked at her. "That's your last name." Amelia's expression changed. "Wait." She looked at the page again. "That's impossible." Daniel slowly turned toward her. "Amelia..." She shook her head. "My family has nothing to do with yours." Daniel pointed at the notebook. "Maybe we thought that." Amelia couldn't speak. Another page contained a photograph. Daniel picked it up. It showed Elena standing beside a young woman. Amelia stared at the young woman's face. She recognized her. It was her grandmother. She stepped backward. "No." Daniel looked at her. "What?" "My grandmother." Silence filled the room. Their families had been connected all along. And suddenly the mystery wasn't just Daniel's anymore. It belonged to both of them. Daniel turned the page. A final note was written beneath the photograph. Two families. One secret. One promise. And underneath it was a date. September 7, 2012. The same date. Again. Amelia looked at Daniel. "Why does everything lead back to that day?" Daniel didn't answer. Then they heard a noise outside. Someone was approaching the house. Daniel quickly closed the notebook. The footsteps stopped at the front door. Amelia whispered, "Who is that?" The door slowly began to open. And a familiar voice spoke from the other side. "Daniel?" Daniel's eyes widened. He knew that voice. It was his mother.
