A Secret Between Friends

1979 Words
The first morning without Daniel at school felt strangely quiet. Amelia had never realized how much one person could change the atmosphere of an ordinary day until he wasn't there. The classroom looked the same. The desks were in the same places. The teachers were giving the same lessons. Students were laughing and talking as usual. Yet Amelia kept glancing toward Daniel's empty seat. It was almost as if her eyes expected him to walk through the door at any moment. Sophie noticed. "You've checked his seat four times." Amelia looked at her. "I have not." "You just did it again." Amelia sighed. "Fine." Sophie smiled. "You miss him." "I know." At least this time, Amelia didn't deny it. She pulled out the notebook Daniel had given her the previous day. She opened it and stared at the words she had written. Some people arrive quietly and somehow become impossible to forget. She smiled. Then she closed the notebook. "Did he message you?" Sophie asked. "Yes. He arrived safely." "That's good." "Yeah." The teacher entered, and their conversation ended. Amelia tried to concentrate. For most of the lesson, she managed. Then her phone vibrated inside her bag. She knew she shouldn't check it during class. She waited until the teacher turned toward the board. Then she quietly looked. It wasn't Daniel. It was an unknown number. The message contained only one sentence. "You should be careful about who you trust." Amelia stared at the screen. Her heart began beating faster. She looked around the classroom. Everyone seemed normal. She immediately locked her phone. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe someone had the wrong number. She tried to ignore it. But a few minutes later, another message arrived. "Not everyone is your friend." Amelia's stomach tightened. She didn't know what to do. She turned toward Sophie. "Sophie." "What?" "Someone just sent me a strange message." Sophie looked concerned. "What kind?" Amelia showed her. Sophie frowned. "Do you know the number?" "No." "Don't reply." "I wasn't going to." "Show it to a teacher if they keep sending messages." Amelia nodded. She tried to put the phone away. But now she couldn't concentrate. Who had sent it? And why? The messages seemed personal. Whoever sent them knew something about her. At break time, Amelia and Sophie went outside. The courtyard was crowded. Amelia kept looking around. "Do you think someone here sent it?" she asked. "Maybe." "Who?" "I don't know." Amelia thought about Chloe. The conversation from the previous week immediately came back to her. "Could it be Chloe?" Sophie shrugged. "Maybe, but don't accuse her without proof." "I know." They walked toward the library. Halfway there, Amelia saw Chloe standing near the staircase. Their eyes met. Chloe looked away. Amelia stopped. "Sophie." "What?" "Look." Sophie turned. "Do you think she knows something?" "I don't know." Amelia decided to approach her. "Chloe?" Chloe turned. "Yes?" "I need to ask you something." "Okay." "Did you send me any messages?" Chloe looked confused. "What messages?" "From an unknown number." Chloe shook her head. "No." "Are you sure?" "Yes." Amelia studied her face. Chloe looked genuinely confused. "I wouldn't do that," she said. Amelia didn't know whether to believe her. "Okay." Chloe sighed. "Is this because of what I told you before?" "Maybe." "I wasn't trying to hurt you." "I know." "I just thought you should know that Daniel has a lot going on." "I understand." Chloe looked at her. "Actually, there's something else I should tell you." Amelia waited. "What?" Chloe hesitated. "I've known Daniel for a long time." "So?" "So I know when something is bothering him." Amelia frowned. "What are you saying?" "I'm saying that he's hiding something." Amelia's heart sank. "What?" "I don't know exactly what." "Then why tell me?" "Because I think you deserve to know." Before Amelia could respond, Chloe walked away. Sophie came beside her. "That was strange." "Very." "What do you think she meant?" "I don't know." Amelia felt frustrated. She didn't want to doubt Daniel. But everything suddenly seemed connected. His sudden distance. His family problems. The trip. The unknown messages. And Chloe's warnings. Maybe there really was something Daniel wasn't telling her. That afternoon, Amelia decided to call him. He answered after a few rings. "Hey." His voice immediately made her feel calmer. "Hi." "How are you?" "I'm okay." "You sound worried." "I am." "What happened?" Amelia hesitated. "Someone has been sending me strange messages." Daniel became serious. "What kind of messages?" She told him. "Did you reply?" "No." "Good." "Do you know who it could be?" "No." There was silence. Then Daniel said, "Don't respond to them." "I won't." "And tell an adult you trust." "I will." "Amelia?" "Yes?" "Are you sure you're okay?" She smiled slightly. "Yeah." "Good." She wanted to ask him about Chloe. But something stopped her. Instead, she asked, "When are you coming back?" "I don't know yet." "I miss you." There was silence. Then Daniel laughed softly. "I miss you too." Amelia smiled. "Really?" "Really." The call ended a few minutes later. Amelia felt better. Maybe she had been overthinking everything. Maybe there wasn't a secret. Maybe Chloe was simply mistaken. But then her phone vibrated again. Another unknown message. "He didn't tell you everything." Amelia stared at the words. This time, she didn't feel confused. She felt determined. She needed answers. The following day, Amelia arrived at school early. She went straight to the library. She needed somewhere quiet to think. She opened Daniel's notebook. She turned through the pages. Then something caught her attention. A folded piece of paper was tucked between two pages. She pulled it out. It wasn't addressed to her. There was only one name written across the top. Daniel. Amelia stared at it. She knew she shouldn't read it. It wasn't hers. She folded it again. But before she could put it back, someone walked into the library. She quickly slipped the paper into the notebook. It was Chloe. "What are you doing here?" Chloe asked. "Studying." Chloe looked at the notebook. "Is that Daniel's?" "Yes." "He gave it to you?" "Yes." Chloe looked uncomfortable. "Did you find something?" Amelia's heart skipped. "What do you mean?" Chloe shook her head. "Nothing." Amelia stood. "You know something." "I don't." "You keep saying that." "Because it's true." "Then why do you keep warning me?" Chloe sighed. "Because I don't want you getting hurt." Amelia's frustration grew. "You keep saying that, but you won't explain anything." "I can't." "Why?" "Because it's not my secret." Amelia stared at her. "What secret?" Chloe looked away. "Ask Daniel." Then she left. Amelia stood alone in the library. Her thoughts were racing. She took the folded paper out again. She stared at Daniel's name. She wanted to open it. She wanted answers. But she knew it wasn't right. So she placed it back inside the notebook. She would wait. When Daniel returned, she would ask him herself. Later that afternoon, Amelia received another message. This time, it was different. "Look in the place where it all began." She stared at the screen. What did that mean? The place where it all began. She thought about it. The first place she and Daniel had really talked. The park. Their first serious conversation had happened there. Could that be what the message meant? She didn't know. She decided not to go anywhere alone. Instead, she showed Sophie. Sophie immediately shook her head. "No." "What?" "You're not going to investigate some mysterious message by yourself." "I'm not planning to." "Good." They decided to tell a trusted teacher. The teacher took the situation seriously and advised Amelia not to respond to the messages and to keep the evidence. For the first time, Amelia felt less alone. Whatever was happening, she didn't have to solve it herself. That evening, Daniel called again. "How was school?" "Interesting." "Good interesting or bad interesting?" "Both." He laughed. "What's going on?" Amelia hesitated. "There's something I want to ask you." "Okay." "Is there something you're not telling me?" Daniel became quiet. "What makes you ask that?" "Just answer." Another silence. Then he said, "There are things happening with my family that I haven't told you about." Amelia's heart sank. "What kind of things?" "I don't know how to explain them." "Try." Daniel took a breath. "My family has been dealing with a disagreement involving someone we know." "Who?" "I can't tell you yet." "Why?" "Because it's complicated." Amelia closed her eyes. "Daniel..." "I know." "I don't want secrets between us." "I don't want them either." "Then tell me." "I will." "When?" "When I know the whole story." Amelia was quiet. She didn't like the answer. But she understood that forcing him wouldn't help. "Okay." "I'm sorry." "It's fine." "No, it isn't." He sounded genuinely upset. "I should have told you more." "You don't have to tell me everything at once." "I know." There was a pause. Then Daniel said something that surprised her. "I'm coming back tomorrow." Amelia's eyes widened. "Really?" "Yes." "That's good." "Are you happy?" She smiled. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "Okay. Very." He laughed. "I'll see you tomorrow." "Tomorrow." The call ended. Amelia smiled. For the first time in days, she felt hopeful. Daniel was coming back. Maybe everything would finally make sense. Maybe she could ask him about the note. Maybe she could ask him about Chloe. Maybe she could finally understand what had been happening. The next morning, Amelia arrived at school early. She couldn't stop smiling. She waited near the school gate. Students came and went. Minutes passed. Then she saw him. Daniel. He stepped out of a car and looked toward the school. The moment he saw Amelia, his face brightened. They walked toward each other. "You came back." "I told you I would." Amelia smiled. "How was the trip?" "Long." "Did you miss school?" "Not really." She laughed. "Rude." "I missed someone here." She smiled. "Who?" He looked directly at her. "You know who." Amelia laughed. "I missed you too." For a moment, everything felt normal again. But then Daniel noticed the expression on her face. "What?" "I need to talk to you." "About what?" "Something happened while you were gone." His smile disappeared. "What happened?" Amelia took a breath. "I received strange messages." Daniel immediately became serious. "Show me." She showed him the messages. He read them carefully. His expression changed. "Amelia..." "What?" "Where did you get this number?" "I don't know." He stared at the screen. "There's something you need to know." "What?" Daniel looked around to make sure nobody was listening. "My family isn't the only thing involved." Amelia's heart began beating faster. "What do you mean?" Daniel looked at her. "The person causing problems knows about you." Amelia froze. "What?" "I didn't want to tell you because I thought keeping you away from it would protect you." "Daniel, what is going on?" He took a deep breath. "I don't know everything yet." "Then tell me what you do know." Before Daniel could answer, the school bell rang. Students began rushing toward their classrooms. Daniel looked at Amelia. "We can't talk here." "Then where?" "I'll tell you after school." "Promise?" "Promise." They walked toward the classroom. But Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed. The mystery wasn't just about Daniel anymore. Someone knew about her. Someone was watching from a distance. And whoever it was seemed determined to make sure Amelia discovered something Daniel desperately wanted to keep hidden. As Amelia sat down at her desk, she opened Daniel's notebook. The folded note was still there. She looked at it for a long moment. Then she closed the notebook. She would wait until after school. Daniel had promised to tell her everything. But Amelia didn't know that by the end of the day, she would discover that some secrets were much bigger than either of them had imagined.
