The Monday morning after the charity event felt strangely different.
Amelia couldn't explain why.
Nothing had happened yet.
The sky was bright, the school looked exactly the same, and students were walking through the gates as they always did.
But something in the air felt unfamiliar.
Perhaps it was because of everything that had happened over the weekend.
Perhaps it was because Daniel had become more important to her than she had expected.
Or perhaps it was because she had begun to realize that whenever someone became important to you, everything connected to them suddenly mattered too.
Amelia walked through the school gates and spotted Sophie standing near the notice board.
"Morning!" Sophie called.
Amelia smiled.
"Morning."
Sophie looked at her carefully.
"You look happy."
"I am."
"Why?"
"Do I need a reason?"
"Usually."
Amelia laughed.
"You ask too many questions."
Sophie linked her arm through Amelia's.
"Come on. We have mathematics first."
They began walking toward the classroom.
Amelia glanced around the courtyard.
She couldn't see Daniel.
"Looking for someone?"
Amelia immediately looked at Sophie.
"No."
Sophie laughed.
"I didn't even say who."
"I know what you're doing."
"I'm just asking."
"He's probably already inside."
Sophie smiled.
"Probably."
When they reached the classroom, Amelia looked through the doorway.
Daniel wasn't there.
She checked the time.
He was usually early.
"That's strange," she said.
"What?"
"Nothing."
She sat down.
A few minutes later, the teacher entered.
Daniel still hadn't arrived.
The lesson began.
Amelia tried to concentrate, but she kept glancing toward the door.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Still no Daniel.
She started wondering whether something had happened.
Finally, the classroom door opened.
Daniel walked in.
"Sorry I'm late, sir."
The teacher looked at him.
"Take your seat."
Daniel nodded.
He walked toward his desk.
Amelia watched him.
He looked tired.
Not physically exhausted, exactly.
Just... distant.
He didn't look at her.
That bothered her more than she wanted to admit.
When the lesson ended, Amelia waited for him.
As students packed their books, she walked toward his desk.
"Hey."
Daniel looked up.
"Hey."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
His answer came too quickly.
Amelia frowned.
"You don't seem fine."
"I'm just tired."
"Did you sleep?"
"Not much."
She wanted to ask more.
But something in his expression told her not to.
"Okay," she said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
"I'll see you later."
Then he walked away.
Amelia stood there, confused.
Sophie approached her.
"What happened?"
"I don't know."
"Did he say anything?"
"He said he's tired."
Sophie watched Daniel leave.
"Maybe he really is."
"Maybe."
But Amelia didn't believe it.
There was something else.
Something Daniel wasn't telling her.
The day continued normally, but Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.
At lunch, she sat with Sophie.
Daniel usually joined them.
Today, he didn't.
He sat at another table with a group of boys from his class.
Amelia tried not to stare.
She failed.
"Stop looking," Sophie whispered.
"I'm not."
"You've looked over there six times."
Amelia sighed.
"I just don't understand."
"Maybe give him some space."
"I know."
She picked at her food.
Sophie leaned closer.
"You know what?"
"What?"
"Sometimes people have problems they aren't ready to talk about."
Amelia nodded.
"I know."
"Then don't assume it's because of you."
"I wasn't."
Sophie raised an eyebrow.
"Okay."
Amelia sighed.
"Fine. Maybe I was."
Before Sophie could answer, someone approached their table.
It was a girl Amelia recognized from another class.
Her name was Chloe.
Chloe smiled politely.
"Can I talk to you?"
Amelia looked up.
"Sure."
Sophie glanced between them.
Chloe hesitated.
"Privately?"
Amelia stood.
They walked a short distance away.
"What is it?" Amelia asked.
Chloe folded her arms.
"I just wanted to tell you something."
"Okay."
"It's about Daniel."
Amelia's heart immediately tightened.
"What about him?"
Chloe looked at her carefully.
"You two have been spending a lot of time together."
"Yes."
"And people are talking."
Amelia frowned.
"About what?"
"About you and him."
Amelia felt embarrassed.
"Why?"
"People think you're together."
"We're friends."
Chloe nodded.
"Maybe. But that's not what everyone thinks."
Amelia didn't know what to say.
Chloe continued.
"I'm not trying to cause problems."
"Then why are you telling me?"
"Because Daniel has enough going on right now."
Amelia's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Chloe looked away.
"I probably shouldn't say."
"Then why bring it up?"
Chloe sighed.
"Because I think you should give him some space."
Amelia stared at her.
"Did Daniel ask you to tell me that?"
"No."
"Then why should I?"
"Because I'm trying to help."
Amelia didn't like the conversation.
"Thank you, but I'll decide what to do."
Chloe nodded.
"Fair enough."
She walked away.
Amelia returned to the table.
Sophie immediately noticed her expression.
"What happened?"
"She was talking about Daniel."
"What did she say?"
Amelia told her everything.
Sophie listened carefully.
"That sounds suspicious."
"Exactly."
"But don't let her make you panic."
"I'm trying."
The rest of lunch passed quietly.
After school, Amelia waited near the gate.
She wanted to talk to Daniel.
She needed to know what was happening.
Students slowly left.
The courtyard became quieter.
Finally, Daniel appeared.
He was walking with another student.
Amelia recognized the student.
Chloe.
Amelia's stomach tightened.
They were talking.
Daniel looked serious.
Chloe said something.
Daniel shook his head.
Then he noticed Amelia.
He stopped.
Chloe looked at Amelia too.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Chloe said something to Daniel and walked away.
Daniel approached Amelia.
"Hey."
"Hi."
"Are you waiting for someone?"
Amelia stared at him.
"You."
He looked surprised.
"Oh."
"Can we talk?"
"Sure."
They walked toward the quiet side of the school grounds.
Amelia folded her arms.
"What's going on?"
Daniel looked confused.
"Nothing."
"Don't say nothing."
He sighed.
"Amelia..."
"You've been distant all day."
"I'm sorry."
"And Chloe came to talk to me about you."
Daniel's expression changed.
"What did she say?"
"She told me you have enough going on and that I should give you space."
Daniel looked frustrated.
"She shouldn't have done that."
"Then tell me what's happening."
He was silent.
Amelia waited.
Finally, he spoke.
"My family is dealing with some problems."
Her expression softened.
"What kind of problems?"
"Things at home."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm trying to be."
Amelia didn't know what to say.
Daniel looked down.
"I didn't want to bring you into it."
"You don't have to handle everything alone."
"I know."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't want you worrying about me."
Amelia looked at him.
"I was already worried."
He smiled sadly.
"I know."
There was silence.
Then Amelia said, "You could have just told me."
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
"That things would become complicated."
Amelia understood.
"You thought I'd leave?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No. I thought you'd feel like you had to stay."
Amelia was quiet.
"I don't want you to feel responsible for me," he continued. "I have things I need to deal with."
"I understand."
"But I don't want you thinking I don't care."
"I never thought that."
"You did."
She smiled faintly.
"Maybe a little."
Daniel laughed softly.
For the first time that day, the tension eased.
Amelia looked at him.
"You don't have to tell me everything."
"I know."
"But you can talk to me when you want."
Daniel nodded.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
"You're welcome."
They stood quietly for a moment.
Then Daniel said, "There's something else."
"What?"
"My parents might be traveling for a while."
"Where?"
"I don't know yet."
"How long?"
"Maybe a few weeks."
Amelia's expression fell.
"Oh."
Daniel noticed.
"Don't look like that."
"I'm not."
"You are."
She sighed.
"I'll miss you."
Daniel smiled.
"I'll miss you too."
Neither of them spoke for a few seconds.
Then Daniel said, "But I'll still be around."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Amelia smiled.
"Okay."
They began walking toward the gate.
The conversation had made things clearer, but Amelia still felt uneasy.
Not because of Daniel.
Because she knew life could change without asking permission.
And she was beginning to understand that caring about someone meant accepting uncertainty.
The next few days passed quickly.
Daniel remained busy with his family.
Amelia gave him the space he needed while still checking on him occasionally.
Sometimes he replied immediately.
Sometimes hours passed before he responded.
She tried not to take it personally.
She knew he had things going on.
Still, she missed the way things used to be.
One afternoon, Amelia sat in the library studying when her phone vibrated.
It was Daniel.
"Can I see you?"
She smiled.
"Where?"
"The courtyard."
"I'll be there."
She closed her book and walked outside.
Daniel was waiting under their usual tree.
He looked calmer.
"Hey."
"Hey."
Amelia sat beside him.
"How are things?"
"Better."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
He smiled.
"My parents worked things out."
"That's good."
"Very."
Amelia smiled.
"I'm happy for you."
Daniel looked at her.
"I wanted to see you because I have something for you."
"For me?"
He reached into his bag and pulled out a small notebook.
Amelia looked at it.
"What is this?"
"Open it."
She did.
The first page contained a short handwritten message.
Amelia read it quietly.
It was about friendship, memories, and how some people unexpectedly became important.
She looked at him.
"You wrote this?"
"Yeah."
"It's beautiful."
"I thought you might like it."
Amelia smiled.
"I love it."
Daniel looked relieved.
"I wasn't sure."
"Why?"
"I didn't know if it was too much."
"It's not."
She closed the notebook.
"Thank you."
"You can write in it."
"What should I write?"
"Anything."
"That's vague."
"Maybe your thoughts."
Amelia smiled.
"Then I'll have to write about you."
Daniel laughed.
"That sounds dangerous."
"Very."
They both laughed.
The moment felt familiar again.
Easy.
Comfortable.
But then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His smile disappeared.
"Who is it?"
"My dad."
He answered.
"Hello?"
Amelia watched his expression change.
He listened.
He didn't say much.
Then he ended the call.
"What happened?" she asked.
Daniel took a deep breath.
"We're leaving tomorrow."
Amelia froze.
"Leaving?"
"My parents decided to travel tonight."
"Where?"
"Out of town."
"For how long?"
"I don't know."
Amelia tried to hide her disappointment.
"When will you come back?"
"I don't know."
The words hurt more than she expected.
Daniel noticed.
"I'll call you."
"Okay."
"I'll text you."
"Okay."
"And I'll come back."
She nodded.
"You better."
He smiled.
"I will."
For the first time, Amelia realized how quickly ordinary moments could become memories.
Yesterday, they had been laughing together at school.
Today, they were sitting beneath a tree wondering when they would see each other again.
Life didn't always give warnings before changing.
Daniel stood.
"I should go."
Amelia nodded.
"Okay."
He looked at her.
"Take care of yourself."
"You too."
He walked away.
After a few steps, he turned.
Amelia was still sitting beneath the tree.
She smiled.
He smiled back.
Then he disappeared through the school gate.
Amelia looked down at the notebook in her hands.
She opened it again.
On the next blank page, she wrote:
"Some people arrive quietly and somehow become impossible to forget."
She stared at the sentence.
Then she closed the notebook.
That evening, Amelia sat beside her bedroom window.
The sky was dark.
Her phone was beside her.
She kept checking it.
No message.
She told herself not to worry.
Maybe he was traveling.
Maybe he was busy.
Maybe he would message later.
Hours passed.
Still nothing.
Eventually, Amelia fell asleep.
The next morning, she woke up and immediately checked her phone.
There was a message.
From Daniel.
"I'm sorry I didn't text earlier. We arrived safely."
Amelia smiled with relief.
She typed:
"I'm glad you're okay."
His response came shortly after.
"Thank you."
Then another message appeared.
"I already miss school."
Amelia smiled.
"Or someone at school?"
There was a pause.
Then:
"Maybe someone."
She laughed quietly.
For the first time since he left, she felt better.
But she didn't know that while Daniel was away, something unexpected was about to happen at school.
Something that would challenge their friendship.
Something that would make Amelia question whether she could trust everyone around her.
And when Daniel finally returned, things between them would not be exactly the same.
Because sometimes distance doesn't make people forget each other.
Sometimes...
It makes them realize just how much they care.
