Something Different

Thursday morning arrived with a strange feeling Amelia couldn't explain. She woke up before her alarm, stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, and thought about the previous afternoon. I do want to know you. Ethan's words kept replaying in her mind. She shook her head and got ready for school. By the time she reached the classroom, Ethan was already there. He looked up from his notebook and smiled. “You're early again.” “So are you.” “I wanted to finish my homework.” “Did you?” “Absolutely not.” Amelia laughed. “You're hopeless.” “I was hoping you'd help me.” “Maybe.” Their teacher walked in, and they quickly settled down. The morning passed normally until English class. Their teacher reminded them about the group presentation. “You have until tomorrow to prepare,” she said. “Make sure everyone contributes.” After class, Daniel suggested they meet in the library. Everyone agreed. When they got there after school, they spread their books across a table. Daniel worked on the introduction while Chloe searched for information. Amelia began writing the main points. Ethan sat beside her. “What should I do?” he asked. “You can help me with this section.” He moved his chair closer to see the page. For the next hour, they worked together. They disagreed about a few ideas, laughed at their mistakes, and eventually managed to put everything together. “This actually looks good,” Ethan said. “Of course it does.” “You're very confident.” “Someone has to be.” He laughed. As the others packed their things, Ethan stayed behind. “Do you need help carrying those books?” “I can manage.” “I know. I'm still offering.” Amelia smiled. “Okay.” They walked through the quiet hallway together. When they reached the front entrance, rain began falling heavily outside. Amelia stopped. “Oh no.” “You didn't bring an umbrella?” She shook her head. “You?” “Same.” They stood there, watching the rain. Ethan laughed. “Great planning.” “Don't blame me.” “I'm blaming both of us.” They waited for several minutes, hoping the rain would slow down. It didn't. Eventually, Amelia checked her phone. “My mom is going to be here soon.” “That's good.” A few minutes later, a car stopped outside. Amelia turned toward Ethan. “I'll see you tomorrow.” “Wait.” She stopped. “Good luck with your presentation.” “You too.” “And Amelia?” “Yeah?” “Don't forget what you told me.” “What?” “That you'll show me one of your stories someday.” She smiled. “I haven't forgotten.” She walked toward the car. Before getting inside, she looked back. Ethan was still standing by the entrance. He waved. She waved back. As the car pulled away, Amelia watched him through the window until he disappeared from view. She didn't know exactly when it had happened. Somewhere between the conversations, the laughter, and the quiet moments, Ethan had become someone she looked forward to seeing every morning. And maybe that was what scared her most. Because she was beginning to realize that this wasn't just an ordinary friendship anymore. Something was changing. Something neither of them had said out loud yet.
