The Night I Was Rejected
The night I was meant to become Luna was the night I was destroyed. The full moon cast a silver glow over the clearing, illuminating the gathered pack as laughter and music filled the air. It was a celebration—my celebration. Tonight, Alpha Damon would mark me, and I would finally take my place beside him as Luna of Black Ridge Pack. I had waited years for this moment, endured whispers, proved my loyalty, and loved him with everything I had. I stood near the centre of the clearing, smoothing down my white dress as my pulse raced. Every eye was on me, and for once, I allowed myself to believe I deserved it. I wasn’t just the quiet girl anymore. I was his chosen mate. “Kathrine.” His voice cut through the noise. Something about it made my stomach tighten. I turned, my smile already forming, but it faltered the moment I saw his expression. Alpha Damon stood tall and composed, his presence commanding as always, yet there was no warmth in his gaze. No pride. No affection. Only cold distance. “Damon?” I said softly, confusion creeping into my voice. “Everyone is waiting.” The music faded. Conversations stilled. An uneasy silence settled over the clearing. Damon stepped forward, his eyes fixed on me with unsettling calm. “I, Alpha Damon of the Black Ridge Pack,” he began, his voice echoing across the silent crowd, “reject you, Kathrine Vale, as my mate and as my future Luna.” The words didn’t register. Not at first. They hovered in the air, heavy and unreal, as though they belonged to someone else’s nightmare. “What…?” My voice came out weak, barely audible. “Damon… what are you saying?” A ripple of murmurs spread through the pack, curiosity quickly replacing celebration. Damon didn’t hesitate. “I have found someone more suitable.” My heart stuttered. And then she appeared. She stepped forward from the crowd with effortless grace, her presence commanding attention in a way I never could. Her dark hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, her posture confident, her expression calm—almost amused. Beautiful. Perfect. Everything I wasn’t. “This is Lyra,” Damon said, taking her hand without a second thought. “My true Luna.” Something inside me shattered completely. “You promised me,” I whispered, tears blurring my vision. “You said I was your mate… that I would stand beside you…” “I was mistaken,” he replied coldly. Mistaken. As though I had been nothing more than an error. A quiet laugh slipped from Lyra as her gaze swept over me, filled with thinly veiled mockery. “Did she really believe she could stand beside you?” she said lightly. “That’s almost embarrassing.” Laughter followed. Soft at first. Then louder. Until it surrounded me completely. The same people who had once greeted me with respect now looked at me with amusement, their eyes filled with pity and ridicule. My chest tightened painfully, each breath becoming harder to take. “Please…” I said, stepping forward despite the humiliation burning through me. “Not like this. Not in front of everyone.” For a brief moment, Damon hesitated. Hope flickered. Then vanished. “Leave,” he said. One word. Cold. Final. The bond between us twisted violently before snapping with a force that sent me crashing to my knees. A sharp, searing pain tore through my chest, stealing the air from my lungs as a broken gasp escaped me. Agony consumed me. This was rejection. This was what it meant to lose everything in a single moment. Tears streamed down my face, but no one moved to help me. No one spoke in my defence. Not a single person stepped forward. I was alone. Completely and utterly alone. Slowly, I forced myself to stand, my body trembling as I wiped the tears from my face. I refused to let them remember me like this—broken and weak. I lifted my head and met Damon’s gaze. There was nothing there. No regret. No guilt. Just indifference. As though I had never mattered at all. Something inside me shifted. The pain didn’t disappear. It hardened. “You’ll regret this,” I said quietly, my voice steady despite everything. Damon scoffed, tightening his grip on Lyra’s hand. “I doubt that.” Perhaps he believed that. Perhaps they all did. But as I turned and walked away from the only home I had ever known, something deep within me began to change. The girl who had loved him, who had waited for him, who had believed in him— was gone. In her place, something colder was beginning to rise. They had humiliated me. Broken me. Cast me aside as though I was nothing. But one day, I would return. And when I did… I would not be the girl they rejected. I would be the woman they feared. And far beyond the borders of Black Ridge Pack, in the darkness where even Alphas did not dare to tread— a ruthless king felt the shift of something powerful… and turned his attention towards me.
