The Contract He Never Signed*
The Contract He Never Signed* Her name was Elena Shaw, 24, freelance graphic designer, rent due in 6 days, mother in hospital. His name was Adrian Volkov, 31, CEO of Volkov Industries, Russian-British, owns half of London after midnight, man who never repeats a night. They should have never met. The invitation was black. Not black paper. Black velvet. Elena found it on her tiny kitchen counter when she came back from St. Mary's Hospital at 11 pm. Her roommate, Maya, was holding it like it was a bomb. "This came by a man in suit. Not delivery guy. Suit guy. Like movie suit," Maya said. Elena opened it. Inside, thick card. _You are invited to Noir - Private Launch. Plus One: Elena Shaw. Host: A. Volkov. Address: 47th Floor, The Shard. Time: 10 PM Tonight. Dress Code: Black. Compensation: £2000 for 2 hours presence as my plus one. - Adrian_ Maya screamed. "Two thousand pounds for standing next to a hot guy? Are you mad? You will go!" Elena needed £3000 for her mother's second chemo cycle. She had £212 in account. Her freelance client ghosted. She looked at the name. A. Volkov. She googled. First image: Adrian Volkov in black suit, grey eyes, scar on left eyebrow, headline: "The Coldest Billionaire in London - Never smiles, never dates twice." Why her? She met him once. Last week at her cafe job. He came for black coffee, no sugar. She spilled sugar near his laptop by mistake. He didn't shout. He just looked at her hands and said, "You have artist hands. Shaking." She said, "Sorry." He said, "Don't be sorry. Be careful." And left £50 tip on £3 coffee. Now he wants her as plus one? At 9:45 pm, she wore the only black dress she had. Borrowed from Maya. Tight, knee-length, back open. She took tube to The Shard. 47th floor. Noir. It wasn't a party. It was darkness with money inside. Men in suits worth her yearly rent. Women in diamonds. And him. Adrian Volkov stood near the glass window, London below his feet. He wore black shirt, black suit, no tie. His grey eyes found her instantly. "You came," he said. Not question. "You paid to make me come," she said. He smiled. First time. Small, dangerous. "I paid for your presence. Not your honesty. But I like honesty free." He put his hand on her waist. Light, but possessive. "For next two hours, you are Elena Volkov. My girlfriend. You don't speak much. You smile. You don't drink." "I don't like being told what to do." "I don't like repeating myself. That's why we will get along. Two hours only." The party was deal. Volkov Industries merging with Japanese tech. They needed him to look stable, not cold killer. A girlfriend makes a man look human. Elena did her job. She smiled. She held his arm. She watched how every man feared him, how every woman wanted him. At 11:30 pm, a Japanese businessman asked, "Volkov, how long you two dating?" Adrian pulled Elena closer, his thumb stroking her bare back where dress opened. Elena shivered. Not from cold. "Six months," Adrian said. "She lives with me." Elena's eyes big. "I don't—" Adrian pressed his thumb harder on her back. Signal to shut up. After that man left, Elena pushed his hand. "I don't live with you. Don't lie using me." "I didn't lie," Adrian whispered near her ear, his breath hot. "You will. After tonight." "What?" "Your mother is in St. Mary's, Ward 3B, needs £3000 in 6 days. You have £212. Your landlord sent final notice today morning 9:12 am. You need money. I need a wife for 6 months for my grandfather's will. My grandfather says if I am not married by 32, I lose 40% company. I am 31 and 11 months. You need £3000. I need a wife. Let's do one night stand... with a contract. Marry me for 6 months. I give you £50,000. Plus mother hospital paid. After 6 months, divorce, you free." Elena felt blood leave face. "Are you crazy? You don't even know me!" "I know enough. You don't steal, even when hungry. You return extra tip. You don't flirt for money. You work two jobs. You are clean. I need clean." "This is not dark romance, this is trafficking!" "This is business. Romance is for people who have time. I don't." He took her outside to balcony. London wind. Her dress flying. "One night. Think. Tonight you go home with £2000. Tomorrow you come to my office at 10 am if you agree for 6 months. If not, you never see me again. I will not force." He left. She stood alone. £2000 envelope in her clutch already. She went home. Mother hospital bill on table. £3000. She cried whole night. Next day 10 am, she was in Volkov Industries, 52nd floor. Adrian was in meeting. He saw her and stopped meeting. "Leave," he told board members. Ten men left. "You came," he said again. "I need terms in writing," she said, voice shaking. He pushed contract. 12 pages. Marriage for 6 months. Live in his penthouse. Appear at events. No physical relationship unless she wants. She can leave anytime after 6 months with £50,000 plus bonus. He will pay mother treatment full. If she cheats, she pays penalty. If he touches without consent, contract void and she gets full money. Last clause: "One night stand clause - First night after marriage, both will share same room, same bed, to make marriage look real for photos for grandfather. No touching without consent. But must share bed." Elena read 3 times. "Why same bed photo?" she asked. "Grandfather has man inside house to check. He sends old maid to check bed is used." "This is sick." "This is rich family sick. You want money or not?" She signed. Elena Shaw signed as Elena Volkov. That night, she moved into his penthouse. 4000 sq ft, black and white, cold like him. First night. The One Night Stand night. She wore white silk night suit he provided. He wore black pant, no shirt. Scar on chest. Bed was king size, but felt small because he was there. "I will sleep on floor," she said. "No. Bed is big. You left, I right. Middle line. No crossing unless you cross." He switched off light. Only London city light from window. Elena's heart beating 120. She never shared bed with man. Adrian said in dark, "Don't be scared. I don't want you like that. I want your presence, not body." "Then why your voice shaking?" she asked. Silence. He turned. Grey eyes glowing in dark. "Because for first time in 10 years, someone signed contract to stay 6 months, not one night. Everyone leaves me after one night, Elena. You signed to stay 6 months. That scares me more than you." Elena, without thinking, moved little. Not crossing line, but closer. "I will not leave before 6 months," she said. "I keep promises." He looked at her. Then did something he never does. He took her hand, not waist, not body, only hand, and kept on middle line. "Then this line is our border and our promise," he said. She fell asleep holding his hand on line. First time in months she slept without rent tension. At 3 am, she woke. He was awake, looking at her. Not touching, just looking. "You talk in sleep," he said. "You said 'don't go'." "I was dreaming about mother," she lied. He knew she lied. The next morning, Elena woke up first. For a second, she forgot where she was. White sheets too soft, smell too expensive, like cold winter and expensive cologne. Then she felt the weight on her hand. His hand was still on the middle line, holding hers. Adrian was still sleeping. In sleep, he looked less dangerous. The scar on his eyebrow looked softer. His breathing was slow. He had not moved all night, as if he kept his promise even in sleep. She tried to pull her hand slowly, but his fingers tightened. Not awake, but possessive even in sleep. "Don't," he said, eyes still closed. His voice was rough, morning voice. "You are awake?" she whispered. "I never sleep deeply when someone is in my bed. Habit." He finally opened his eyes. Grey, cold, but today a little less cold. He looked at their hands on the line. "You didn't cross," he said. "Neither did you." "Good. That means we both know how to keep a promise. Most people don't." He left the bed, went to bathroom. Elena saw his back, scar on his left shoulder blade, long, like knife. She wanted to ask, but didn't. When he came out in a towel, she quickly looked away. Her cheeks red. "You can look," he said, smirking. "It's just a body. You signed for 6 months, you will see it." "I signed for marriage, not for towel show," she said, throwing a pillow at him. He caught it easily. He laughed. A real laugh this time. "You are the first wife who throws pillow on first morning. My grandfather will love you." Downstairs, breakfast was ready. The old maid, Martha, was arranging plates. She was the same maid who took photo at 7 am. She smiled at Elena, warm smile. "Good morning, Mrs. Volkov. Your husband likes black coffee, no sugar. What would you like?" Mrs. Volkov. Elena's heart skipped. No one ever called her Mrs. anything. "Tea, please. Normal tea," she said. Adrian sat opposite, newspaper in hand. "Today you have to come to office with me at 2 pm. My grandfather is coming. He wants to meet you." "Your grandfather? Today?" "Yes. Don't be scared. Just be you. The girl who says I don't like being told what to do. He hates fake girls. He will like you." Elena's spoon shook. "What if he asks how we met? What is our story?" Adrian folded newspaper, looked straight into her eyes. "We tell truth. You spilled sugar in my laptop. I offered you money to be my plus one. Then I fell for your honesty. Truth is always more believable than lie, Elena. Because love at first sight is not fake for us. Hate at first sight turned into contract, contract will turn into something else. We don't need to lie." Martha brought tea. Adrian's phone buzzed. Message from grandfather: Bringing lawyer to change will. My grandson finally has a wife who holds his hand while sleeping. Adrian showed message to Elena. Elena read and her eyes filled. "I should go to hospital to see my mother," she said. "I already shifted her to private room, full-time nurse. Driver will take you at 11 am. You have 3 hours before grandfather meeting. Go." Elena stood. "Thank you." "Don't thank me," Adrian said, standing too, close. "You are my wife for 6 months. Your mother is my responsibility now. That's contract." He was so close, she could smell his cologne. "And after 6 months?" she asked, voice small. He looked at her lips, then back to eyes, respecting line. "After 6 months, if you still want to leave, you can. But I don't think you will want to," he whispered. That was the moment Elena realized. This one night stand was never about one night.
