BETRAYAL ON THE ICE
Evelyn's POV
My ringing phone drew me from my slumber as I stretched my hand lazily to pick my phone up. Without staring at the screen,I picked the call and was greeted with Nina's voice. “Where the hell are you?” She screamed into the phone,I had to move it away from my ear.
I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “I left the party with__” I stopped mid sentence as a loud banging registered in my head.
“I'm listening!” She shrieked. My eyes fluttered open and the sight before me made me freeze completely.
I scrambled off the bed, falling on the floor with a loud thud and a pain shooting up my legs but I ignored it.
“Are you okay?” I heard Nina asking but her voice sounded distant. I remembered spending the night with Dylan, ice hockey champion. Every college girl dreams but now, I sat on the floor staring at a dead man with his blood all over the bed and my body.
My hands shook greatly as I puked on the floor,my breathing coming rapidly. “Talk to me!” I could hear the desperation in Nina's voice but I couldn't bring myself to say anything.
I stood up and rushed into the bathroom, trying to scrub off the blood on my body but it had stuck to several parts of my body, making it impossible for me to wash everything off.
Tears rolled freely down my cheeks. I walked back into the room, picked my things and was about to step out of the room when I began to hear the police sirens.
My heart dropped. My breathing hiked up and my palms became sweaty. I quickly scrolled through my contacts, searching for Dylan's name and when I got it,I dialed it.
It rang for a few minutes and stopped. I tried again and it didn't go through. A loud banging on the door made my legs wobble as I rushed into the bathroom, hoping I'd somehow see an escape route.
“Miss Jonas, you've been surrounded and kindly step out with your hands in the air.” I heard the voice of a police officer but I couldn't bring myself to walk out so I sat on the floor, curling myself up as tears continued to stream down my cheeks.
My whole life flashed before my eyes. My scholarship, the job waiting for me,my position as the cheerleader, everything. My sobs grew louder and so did the voices of the police men.
With a loud thud I heard the room door fall to the floor. “Oh my goodness, this is gruesome.” I heard a female voice say.
“Miss Jonas, you need to come out right now you're surrounded.” I tried to stand up but I felt stuck, the voices sounded distant and even as they hit the bathroom door down and lifted me up, I couldn't think of anything else.
The cold handcuffs claimed my hands as I was escorted into the waiting police van. I looked around, people were taking pictures, videos, gossiping and probably insulting me.
…..
“You need to make a statement, they're pressing charges. The man you killed is the CEO of the Kentucky hockey club and a very influential man!” The female police officer shrieked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I refused to look at the television but I could hear the voices. “I didn't kill any__” she hit the table so hard I jerked in horror.
“You either pick up the pen, write your statement or you sit back and vanish into thin air. You messed with the wrong family.” She said angrily and relaxed back on her seat.
A few minutes later,I was led to a cramped cell and tossed inside like garbage. “Have a nice time with the rodents and geckos.” The female warden said as she locked the bars and walked away.
My thoughts drifted to my parents and I wondered why they hadn't come to see me, no one had come, not Dylan, nor my parents. Just Nina. My parents weren't the best but they had their good sides.
Two weeks later, I stood before the judge as she flipped through documents. The murder weapon,a knife, was in a ziplock bag with my fingerprints. Dylan wasn't present,my parents weren't present,it was just Nina. My best friend. No one from my school wanted to be involved in a murder case and I got the information from Nina that the school has cut all connections with me.
I turned back and saw her hands clamped. I know she's praying but with all the evidence pointing towards me,I know my fate has been stamped.
The judge raised her head and with one strike, the court became silent. “In the murder of Mr Finn Green, owner of Kentucky hockey club,Miss Evelyn Jonas has been found guilty and is thereby sentenced to a life imprisonment with hard labor and no opportunity for parole.” My legs wobbled and gave out beneath me as I fell to the floor.
“That's not fair!” I heard Nina screaming but I couldn't bring myself to look at her. Two police officers came to help me up and as the handcuffs clamped my hands, hot tears rolled down my cheeks.
“I'm sorry, I'm really sorry.” She whispered as I nodded. “You did your best.” I whispered. I couldn't afford a lawyer so the state provided a lawyer for me but it was clear from the onset that it was a lost case.
“Hey pretty head.” One of the ladies said as I was shoved into the cramped room. My eyes scanned the entire place and it smelled so terrible but I recalled the advice a police officer gave to me.
The sooner you learn to adapt, the better for you.
Days passed quickly and so did my health, I'd just finished mopping the floors when I felt light headed. I tried to grab the door handle but I missed it.
My legs wobbled and the next minute,I fell to the floor as darkness surrounded me.
