Khanna POV
Everyone turns to look at me, questions evident in their eyes. I sigh. It’s not as if I was going to keep this from them. On the contrary, I wanted to know more before I informed them, so I was hoping that they would not pick up on Mr. Anonymous and instead focus on the other information. But then again, they wouldn’t be the best team if they did that.
“Who is Sam referring to?” Kyo asks.
“Mr. Anonymous is the name I have given to someone who is basically an important member in the Hunters’ Organization,” I start, but Sam quickly interrupts me.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, when Hajime was doing some research into Jake and Bradley, I decided to also do some research. I focused mainly on the background of the two and whatever took my fancy or stood out to me as something I should look into. I found something really interesting: there is someone who is behind the organization. The person is dubbed ‘Mr. Anonymous’ as nothing can be traced back to their identity.”
“How deep into the organization are they?” Sam asks.
“Quite deep. From what I have found out, most of the funding and mission requests from the past few years have come from them, most of which are aimed at mainly one wolf to complete.”
“Jake?” Tohru asks.
“Got it in one,” I reply, nodding my head.
“But why would he agree to them all of the time?” Tohru asks.
“Apparently, he did resist once, and whatever the hunters did to him made sure that he would never deny another mission or request again. When they say jump, he asks how high,” I say, feeling sad that someone has to live their life like that.
“What’s his most recent job?” Tohru asks.
“He has to go and find a Jade Wolf and bring them to Bradley and his team,” I reply.
“How do you know this?” Sam asks me.
“I saw it. They used a portal in a warehouse to meet with Jake, and I heard them give him those instructions.”
“You mean you spied on them?”
“No, I mean I accidentally wandered into the warehouse and saw that Bradley and his team were using a portal that is not supposed to even exist,” I defend myself.
“Yeah, that is totally what happened,” Sam says sarcastically, clearly not believing me.
“So, they want Jake to go and find something?” Tohru asks. I nod my head, but then an idea comes to me.
“Sam, I have a job for you,” I say, gaining his attention.
“What is it?”
“Can you find out about the Jade Wolf and what it is, please?” I ask him.
“The Jade Wolf?” He asks me.
“Yes,” I say.
“Are you sure that’s what you want me to look at?”
“Of course, why?” I ask, confused. Everyone is looking at him now.
“I know about the Jade Wolf. Someone mentioned it to me the other day. It is a wolf that is green like a jade stone, and it is meant to herald in a new age.”
“A new age? What do you mean?” Tohru asks.
“Just that. Apparently, the presence of the Jade Wolf means that the supernatural world is going to be thrown into a war, and whatever side the Jade Wolf is on will be the winning side,” Sam explains.
“So it is a living wolf?” I ask. I thought it might have been a statue or something from the name.
“It’s a living wolf,” Sam replies.
“What kind of powers does this wolf have then?” I ask.
“Powers?”
“Yeah, with a prophecy like that, the wolf must have powers.”
“I don’t know, no one knows about that. The prophecy merely says that the Jade Wolf will herald in a new age and that the Jade Wolf will be the one to indicate the winning team. Whoever mates with the Jade Wolf will themselves become stronger and their offspring will continue the Jade Wolf line. But that’s it,” Sam explains.
“Maybe they have more of the prophecy on their side? Because at the moment, that does not warrant the death of the wolf,” Kyo says.
“Who said Bradley was going to kill the Jade Wolf? I have the feeling a darker future awaits that wolf if he gets his hands on them,” Sam says.
“Why must everything be so dark with you? Just because it is a prophecy does not mean it’s true. If that was the case, then the world would have ended at midnight on the cusp of the new millennium,” I argue.
“Ye of little faith,” Sam counters.
“You believe in the supernatural way too much,” I continue to argue.
“We are hunters; it’s our job to believe,” Sam deadpans.
“I don’t agree with that at all. I just don’t understand all of this fighting between themselves and with us humans. I mean, I wouldn’t mind being friends with one,” I say, thinking back to the wolf that saved me in the forest that day. Thinking back on it, the wolf must have been a werewolf, meaning that a supernatural creature had saved my life. It had not attacked me like I had been told it would all of my life.
“You need to be careful what you say, Khanna. That’s blasphemy and another hunter might hear you and you’ll be in serious trouble,” Sam says.
I know that, but it does not change my thoughts. Recently, I have thought more and more about the rivalry between us and the supernatural community, and it just does not make sense. Hell, the clients we have dealt with that are supernatural have been nothing but kind and considerate towards us.
We carry on talking about the connection between Jake and Bradley that we know so far. I tell them about what I witnessed in the warehouse yesterday and how Bradley is planning on double-crossing Jake and killing him once the Jade Wolf is handed over. We are in agreeance that this may be the one time when we step in and interfere, as none of us want to stand by when we know an innocent is going to be harmed. Even Sam is in agreeance with us.
The only thing I have not told them, which no one knows, is the attraction I felt with Jake. It was the same as when that wolf helped me to safety years ago. The attraction comes from deep within my bones, making me forget about logic and just want to be with him. But until I know why I feel this way, I will be keeping it to myself, as the last thing I want is for Bradley to discover I feel this way.
We are in deep discussion when we hear doors banging opening outside and footsteps running down the corridor. We all look up as the door flies open.
“I found the anonymous person!” Hajime shouts happily while he runs into the room.
“Who is it?” I ask, all of us looking up.
“It is Luke,” Hajime answers, smiling.
“Who the hell is Luke?” I ask Hajime.
