Khanna POV
“Who the hell is Luke?” I ask Hajime.
While Hajime works away at his laptop, Kyo looks at me in confusion.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“What has Mr. Anonymous got to do with us and everything that is going on?” He asks.
“I’m not sure. What I do know, though, is that we have been getting missions from him, and those missions were to be handed down to Jake. Meaning that Jake is their true target and they are using the organization to meet their ends,” Sam explains.
“How do you know this?” I ask.
“I have been accepted into the circle like we planned; they gave me access to a lot of information surrounding Jake and his situation,” Sam explains.
“So why are they being nice to Jake and keeping him alive? I thought the purpose of the hunters is to kill werewolves?” Kyo asks.
“It is, but Jake seems to be special. For some reason, he has been kept alive, but the reasons why are unknown to anyone other than the head,” Sam explains.
“And we cannot just ask him outright, unless I want to disappear,” I sigh.
“Hang on, guys, I think I may have cracked it,” Hajime says, stopping our conversation in its tracks.
After a few more clicks from his laptop, Hajime looks up victorious.
“Mr. Anonymous is none other than Luke Marigold,” He says, smirking.
“Who is Luke Marigold?” I ask, the name does not sound familiar to me at all.
“He is the elder brother of Jake,” Hajime replies.
I swear this man’s skills are the best in the universe!
“Jake’s older brother? So why would he target his brother? Isn’t family and pack a big thing to werewolves?” I ask, surprised.
“It would appear that is not the case in this instance. Luke killed Jake’s mate after forcibly taking her. He then pinned the crimes on Jake and got him banished,” Hajime explains.
“That is just cruel and sick, what the hell?!” I exclaim.
“That’s not even the worst part,” Hajime continues.
“There is more?” I ask, shocked.
“Yep. Luke seems to be working with someone behind the scenes and his parents may very well be in on it, but nothing can be proven. His brother is up to something big, though. And it has to do with this Jade Wolf,” Hajime says.
“So if we find the Jade Wolf, then we will find Luke and Jake?” Kyo asks.
I hum in response. It is possible, but what if there is more to this than meets the eye. Just like everything else lately, I get the feeling that we are only scratching the surface of what is going on.
“What if Jake already has found the wolf? That could explain why he has not been around much recently. Last I heard he went silent on his last mission a few days ago. He gave an update that he had located the Jade Wolf but then went silent. I think he found her,” I say.
“Her?” Kyo asks.
“He could be the Jade Wolf’s mate,” Hajime says, connecting the dots.
“That could explain why he disappeared, but what worries me is how this will affect us,” I say.
“What do you mean?” Kyo asks.
“If Luke has been using the hunters to monitor Jake, then Luke has just lost his ace, meaning that he may come for the hunters,” I explain.
“But you are all trained to deal with werewolves and the supernatural,” Kyo replies.
“Yeah, but we cannot take on an army of wolves transformed. They are crazy strong. And Luke comes across as someone who is really clever but pure evil. The fact that his pack never put the truth together goes to show just how effective Luke is,” I say.
“It feels like we may be about to deal with the devil himself,” Kyo says, shuddering.
“I think the devil would be better. This Luke guy is a nasty piece of work; the more I am digging, the more I am discovering about him, and there is nothing good,” Hajime says, looking up from his screen again.
“Guessing you have found out even more?” Kyo asks.
Hajime nods his head. “This Luke is a real mean guy. Everything that has gone down in his pack, he has been at the center of it. Even with other packs, he has links to rogues and rebel groups of other supernaturals. This is one guy we need to be wary of,” he says.
“I am surprised that he has not been found out yet,” Sam says.
“Because he is excellent at covering his tracks,” Hajime responds.
“But you uncovered it all,” Kyo replies.
“Maybe, but something tells me that it was more because he either wants to be found out or it is a breadcrumb trail for someone else. He is as skilled at hiding his tracks as I am at information gathering,” Hajime says.
I shiver. Hajime is the best in the world. There is no one who can beat him at intelligence gathering. He is always having offers of employment thrown his way, but he won’t accept them. I was lucky to recruit him. The fact that we have gelled since then makes it even better as I know that he stays out of loyalty to all of us.
“So, what are we going to do?” Sam asks.
I let out a sigh, weighing up our options. If we start to make a noise now, then we will be alerting the hunters to what we are doing, and right now we do not have enough money or connections to protect ourselves. If we start to make waves now, we could be swallowed by them and be made to disappear. I remember the event with the portal from before, how I was left there to die because I had helped someone I shouldn't have. I don't regret it, but I learned a very valuable lesson that day: don't make waves unless you can protect yourself or back yourself up.
And right now, we are at too big of a disadvantage to be able to do anything.
“Either way, let’s keep our heads down and do what we do best. Let’s stay out of this until the time is right. I get the feeling that we have a future with this case, so maybe keep an eye on it, but for now we have to keep ourselves safe,” I say.
“I agree,” Kyo says.
“Me too,” Hajime and Sam say together.
I know that we are going to be pulled into whatever mess is going on with the hunters and Jake, but for now, I want to focus on me and stay alive. And for now, that is to drop this case and pretend that I never knew anything.
