Chapter 16- Mission Completed

1422 Words
Khanna POV It has been a few weeks since I last caught up with the guys. I have been on a mission where I had to infiltrate a group to get the information needed to take them down. I am currently in the local police office, talking to the chief of police; after all, he hired me personally. “Are you saying that this is it?” The chief asks, looking at me incredulously. “Yes, that memory stick holds all the information that you are looking for. It took me a few weeks to get it, and I will not be able to go back for anything else; my cover almost got blown,” I reply. “I see, thank you for doing this for me.” The police chief smiles at me. “It is okay, I enjoyed it. It was fun to play a bad girl and finally be able to wear my normal clothes without standing out for once,” I reply, smiling. “Good, but stay out of the way, please, until we move in and make our arrests. You may have a bounty on your head now. I am sorry.” “It is nothing to worry about. I have been in worse situations before,” I reply, brushing it off. In reality, I am nervous, as I have seen the brutality of this group first-hand. While my father may be more brutal than them, for humans, they could certainly put some wolves to shame. “Don’t take this so lightly. I have put you in a dangerous position, and one I am regretting. Please, go home and stay safe,” the chief says sternly. I nod my head and head to the door. “I will be leaving now, Chief. Stay safe,” I say. “You too.” I leave the office and start to head to the entrance door. “Khanna!” I turn to the source of the sound and see Adam waving at me. “Hey Adam, how is it going?” I ask, walking over and giving him a hug. “Busy as always. What are you doing here?” Adam asks with concern. “Finishing a job and providing the evidence requested.” “What?! Are you okay?” Adam starts to check me over from head to toe, causing me to laugh. “Yes, it was just a small job. Nothing too major,” I reply, giving him my best smile. I will not tell him that my cover almost got blown and that I may need to lay low until the chief’s case is done. “Nothing too major? Khanna, I can tell when you are fibbing,” Adam replies sternly, causing those around us to giggle. “I am not,” I reply. Adam just gives me his ‘dad’ look, and I am trying really hard not to blab. I hate it when he gives me this look; it makes me feel like I need to tell him everything. That is why he is so good at his job. I sigh. “I am fine, the job just got a little hairy towards the end, but nothing I could not handle.” Adam narrows his eyes at me. “Let me guess: you went in alone and almost got caught. You had no backup, and your friends and team have no idea where you are or what you were up to. Right?” I swallow the lump in my throat and nod my head. How does this man always know everything? “Maybe,” I say, drawing out the word. “That means she did,” says Jack, who is sitting next to Adam. I smack Jack on the back of the head. “Hey! Don’t make things worse for me,” I say, jokingly angry. “You don’t need any help from me there,” Jack replies, laughing. “Khanna, what have we talked about before? Huh?” Adam asks, talking to me like I am a child. “That I wouldn’t do anything too reckless,” I mumble. “Too reckless? I don’t remember using those terms.” “It was a favor, though.” “Oh, and that makes it all right? For once, you should think about your own safety.” Adam lectures. “I did, I pulled out of the mission when it got too dangerous,” I mumble. “You never should have done it in the first place. You matter to some people, and we would be devastated if anything happened to you. Especially because you were on a job that you didn't really need to be on. You need to think about others as well as yourself, Khanna! You are wise, but you are still young and naive. Think things through for once.” Before I can even respond, a voice booms around the room. “Adam! Leave her alone.” The chief’s voice carries across the room. Adam whips his head up and looks at the chief angrily. “Do you know what she did?” “Yes, and thanks to her, we can close our biggest case of the year. So, cut her some slack,” the chief replies. Adam looks between the chief and me, his eyes darting between us. “I see, so this favor was for the chief. You should have said no.” “I owed him one, though,” I reply, but as soon as the words leave my mouth, I realize what I said and know that I am in trouble. “Owe him one? Why? You know if you are in trouble to always come to me,” Adam says. Yeah, but you couldn’t help last time, I think to myself, but instead, I stay silent and just look at the ground. “Adam, please leave her alone and get back to work,” the chief says, turning and going back into his office. Adam points at me. “You are lucky today, missy. I am snowed under, and the chief is involved. Otherwise, you would be getting a lecture. Now go home and rest. You look shattered,” Adam lectures. “Yes, sir,” I reply with a salute, causing those around us to laugh. “And stay at home, missy,” Adam warns. “Why?” I ask. “For once, please just do as I ask? If I tell you, then you will want to get involved, and I cannot have that right now.” “But…” “No buts; they are for ashtrays. And you are to go straight home and stay there until I call you.” Adam glares at me. I nod my head, turn on my heel, and head out. I quickly send a text to my friends and team that I am safe and heading home, so I am not paying much attention to what is happening in front of me. I walk out of the door, but I don’t get far when I bump into someone. “Sorry,” I say, looking up. As the man’s face comes into view, my breath gets stuck in my throat. “Khanna, are you okay?” The man asks me. I take a step back. How does he know my name? I have never met this man before in my life. Yet he looks familiar to me. “Who are you?” I ask. The man standing in front of me tilts his head and sniffs the air. I narrow my eyes at him. He is clearly a wolf, but I cannot place where I have seen him before. His big frame is daunting, and while some may find his features handsome, I personally find him creepy. The vibe I am getting from him is not a nice one at all. Every instinct in my body is telling me to turn tail and run, to get as far away as possible. "Who are you?" I ask again, making my voice sound firmer than I am feeling. "You know exactly who I am." The man replies, smirking at me. Shivers go down my spine at the coldness in the smirk. "If I knew who you were, I wouldn't be asking," I retort. The man laughs a deep laugh. "I guess you are right. Do you really want to know who I am?" No, I think to myself. "Yes," I reply, sounding more confident than I feel. "My name is Luke."
