Khanna POV
“So, are we doing the job?” Hajime asks.
I sigh and lean on the coffee table. I am currently in his home. He is sitting on the sofa while I am on the floor and leaning on the coffee table, surrounded by paper and other junk.
“I don’t know,” I respond.
“But Luke and Bradley are expecting you to do the job.”
“I know.”
“And you don’t want to do the job,” Hajime says gently.
“Not really.”
“Because the target is Jake?”
“Yeah. Plus, I don’t really want anything to do with Luke; there is something about him I do not like.”
“Do you think he may be linked to the Jade Wolf case?”
“Huh?”
“You know, the green wolf that is destined to change the supernatural world. Its appearance means a big war is brewing that will change many fates. At least, that is the word going round.” Hajime explains.
“Ah, and I am guessing they all think that the wolf is linked to Jake?”
“Got it in one. They think it may be his chosen mate.”
“How do you know all of this?”
“I may have hacked Bradley's system and Luke's phone. Luke is the one who put Bradley up to the job and to recruit Jake a few years ago. I think there is more to this mystery than meets the eye.”
“Why does Luke always go after his own brother? That seems off to me, especially in a world where bonds and loyalty are prevalent over anything else. I agree, something is off.”
We sit there for a few moments in silence, both of us lost in our thoughts. Then, I stand up and stretch. “Let’s use this job as a cover. We can get access to the supernatural world and do a little digging of our own around Jake and the Jade Wolf, as well as finding out just how deep Luke’s roots actually go.”
Hajime stands up and smiles. “Sounds like you are planning something.”
“Yes and no. But before we make a move, we need to know more about what is really going on. Bradley and everyone is hiding something from me, and I want to know what it is. Plus, I just really hate Luke.”
“Count me in,” Hajime says, practically running to his bedroom to pack.
We head to the portal, making sure that no one is following us. The last thing we want is to be followed; after all, we don’t want others to know what we are up to.
We reach the portal in record time, both of us standing in front of it and watching it shimmer. While I have been through a few times, this time it feels different. I feel like something is about to happen, what though I do not know.
I take a deep breath and Hajime takes my hand.
“Let’s go,” He says calmly, both of us not taking a step into the unknown.
Hajime POV
I have been with Khanna for a few years now as her hacker, but what she doesn’t know is that I am in love with her. She only sees me like a brother, and for now, I am happy with that, but I hope that we can move on to a full relationship one day.
I met Khanna a few years ago one evening when she saved my life. I had been doing a hacking job for a criminal gang, and unbeknownst to me, they had put a hit out on me once I had fulfilled my usefulness. The person they sent? Khanna.
I thought I was going to die at her hands, but instead, she recruited me to her little group of friends, and from that day on, I have been in love with her. The first thing I remember seeing was her eyes; they were so bright and full of life, but sadness was there, too. They drew me in, and the more I learned about her, the more I wanted to protect her.
Bradley may be her adoptive father, but he is so cruel to her, never letting her go or have the life she wants. Instead, he turned her into one hell of a weapon, although most of the transformation came from Khanna herself.
I decided to help her because I want to protect her, but also because I want her to get out of this life and live a normal one, even if I am not involved in that life. I just want her to be happy, yet every time she is about to break free, Bradley turns up with another outrageous demand.
The connection between Luke and Bradley is an odd one. Why would a hunter and a werewolf be working together? I think that there is something more going on, and I am hoping that Khanna and I can get to the bottom of it before anything happens to Khanna.
They have been working together for years now, and each time their target has been Jake. There is something more going on between Luke and Jake than meets the eye, or maybe a past event that Luke is trying to conceal? Now that we are heading to the supernatural world, I might be able to hack into a system in this world and find out a little bit more about them.
After all, Bradley kept most of his important files on paper, which meant I couldn’t find everything on him and Luke.
I take a deep sigh and look at the portal in front of me, my bag in one hand with my clothes and technology that I need to be able to do the job for Luke but also to do some digging behind the scenes for our other mission.
I take Khanna’s hand, and we walk through the portal together. I have never been to the supernatural world before, so I am both excited and nervous.
I grip Khanna’s hand tightly, not wanting to lose her in the portal. But I stop dead in my tracks.
The view in front of me is breathtaking, a sea of the brightest green trees I have ever seen. The ground is green and brown. The colors feel like they are warming my very soul. The view looks like an oil painting, so vibrant and alive.
The sound of birds and rustling of the leaves and bushes hit my ears, while the smell of nature makes me take a deeper breath to store the scent to memory.
I look around at the forest before us; every way looks the same. I turn just as the portal closes behind us.
“Which way do we go?” I ask, still holding Khanna’s hand.
“Forward,” She replies, pulling me along behind her.
I walk happily into the unknown, hand in hand beside the girl I love.
