Chapter 8. Navigating a Flash As they rose swiftly into the sky, Sam couldn’t take his eyes off the rapidly shrinking landscape below. He kept thinking, All I’ve got between me and death is this coyote! What if he loses his ability to fly? What if I fall off? Sam clamped his legs tighter around Randolph’s chest and held the straps more firmly. Finally, they stopped gaining altitude and hung in midair, thousands of feet above the ground. Sam looked longingly at the brightly lit container port. He wanted to ask Randolph to forget about flashes and grumpy old men and drop him off where his father worked in the offices that ran the docks, but he forced himself to be silent.
