Captain Pumpkin set their course as they flew, and they quickly reached the right altitude to find the next flash. “Sam,” he said, “come here and take the wheel. Easy, now. Turn left to go left, right to go right, push forward to go down, pull back to go up, but make all the corrections with a very light touch. Leave the levers and shaft to me; I’ll show you how to use them another day.
“See these two compasses, B and E? You see this arrow here, and this one here? Keep them pointed right where they are. If they drift off, and they will, make very slight corrections to ease the ship back on course. Here, let me show you.”
