Noomi’s POV
The whole place smelled of medicine. The type of strong stench that almost wanted to make me puke, eww. On the walls we're posters of different health awareness means that serves as an easy way to educate the patients and visitors on their health. I stared blankly, confused and looked quite unkempt because I did not bother to arrange my hair when I was called. One image that depicted what cancer could cause the human body sent goosebumps down my skin as I removed my eyes from the image in one sweep. A nurse interrupted my wandering eyes and thoughts, “he's really dressed. You can go in now,” she said with a smile. I heaved a sigh of relief yet still bothered, expecting the worst and still hoping for the best. I stood up and staggered a little bit but my brother held me down. “I think you should rest for a while while I go inside first. When you gain some strength you join me,” he said, pulling me down to the chair. I was already discouraged to see my father who I almost lost last week. I didn't care, I stood up and went in. I saw tubes fixed into my father's skin from different openings on his body. The nose and the mouth had tubes which had different contents moving through them heading into my father's body. Difference machines beeped as the oxygen masks led steady on his nose. My one strong dad who did his cab business with ease now laid still struggling to breath or even look. My heart shattered into pieces pouring into my stomach. After a while my father started jerking. My brother ran out to call the doctor who rushed in and placed him in a steady position. The Doctor towered above me but when he wanted to speak with me privately he bent to my height and whispered into my ears, “can I have one word with you outside for a while miss? " he requested. “Of course,” I responded, walking after him. “Your father's condition is getting worse for now there is very little improvement. What I ask of you is there is room for you to make that decision of not wanting him to bear the pains and suffering anymore however the total choice regarding the fate of your father's life depends on you now. He's in a vegetative state and can't make decisions.” My tears gathered inside my eyes are struggling to make its way out. The Doctor reached out to his pocket and dragged out a tissue paper which he gave me to help myself with. “I think I want him left alone for now. No decisions yet. Let's look at his health again this week,” I suggested breaking in between to cry and wipe my tears. “It's fine however the hospital will let you know if anything comes up along the line and I hope it's something positive.” He adjusted his glasses, closed the folder that he held in his hand and walked away. I stood outside cleaning my eyes properly to prevent my brother from guessing correctly that I cried. I felt helpless. When I had pulled myself together, I walked in and reached out for my father's forehead giving him a kiss and said words of affirmation which I believed his spirits heard. “Sis, I can stay with Dad. You know you have to get going. You can't afford to lose that job opportunity.” In as much as I never wanted to leave what he told me was true. I had to leave. I had started sobbing when he came closer and held my right hand with both hands and I began to remember what he told me, “God created the both of us so that one of us would not be alone. Remember no matter what happens we are always going to be together. You have nothing to worry about,” he reassured me. I looked at him and nodded. I took a deep breath when he wiped my tears with his handkerchief. “What can I do?" I asked hopelessly. “You need to go to that interview, come back and we both get some rest. That's all we can do now,” he suggested drawing the visitor's chair to sit down. “Stay strong ,stare at the road properly. I wish you a good taxi today since you seem to have a problem with them.” I left the ward and stepped outside. Darkness was already chasing the day. It was depressing because the more my fathers health got worse, the more I became scared of the dark. How easy everything would have been if my father was not plagued by this deadly cancer. I stepped into the taxi and observed a moment of silence for a while, taking my time to digest whatever happened back there. The situation was very much real and unreal. I remembered I had no proper clothes for going for the job interview then I remembered Chanel she can be of good use. I initially told you the taxi to drop me off at a local store for some cup of drink to lighten my mood but the lack of outfit bothered me. “Please can you take me to Hemingway Street I won't be going to the wine shop again,” “That will cost you double of the initial money we agreed on.” “What? It doesn't cost that much to Hemingway Street.” “Should I go to the wine shop which costs less?” He asked huffing. I was already in a bad mood. This taxi was making it worse. I had no choice but to agree. “Just go take me to Hemingway Street, would you? I won't pay you double. I will only increase the price by adding something small to the initial agreement.” I insisted angrily removing my hand bag which was on my laps on the the car seat. I looked through his front cameras and our both eyes met. His stare made me more paranoid. It was a death stare.
