OLIVIA After that day, I woke up lying on a white bed. A medical monitor beeped near my head. As I took in my surroundings, I realized that I was in the pack hospital. The thick smell of disinfectant filled my nostrils. When I opened my eyes fully, I saw Mark George standing nearby. He wore the yellow top and blue shorts he used for basketball games against neighboring packs. *What is he doing here?* I wondered as I tried to move my hand. I did not know how long I had been unconscious, but when the nurse noticed that I was awake, she screamed, “She’s awake, Doctor!” That was when I realized that my head was wrapped in several bandages. The last thing I remembered was my foster mother’s brutal beating that morning after Mark had defended me for the first time in his family’s house. Now he was here. *What did Mark want from me? Why was he in my hospital room? Who brought me here?* A series of questions flooded my mind, and I felt a pounding headache coming on. Luckily, my foster mother and her daughter, Emily, were not in the room, which relieved me. However, I felt sad when I thought about how I would no longer be able to further my education at the pack’s university. “You’re finally awake,” Mark said as he rushed to my bedside. I recoiled from him as I tried to sit up, but he frowned. Mark had always avoided me, so why was he acting as if he cared about me now? I did not want my foster mother to hit me again, so I thought it best for Mark to keep his distance. When I tried to speak, my throat felt sore. I could not form any words; I only croaked incoherently. Surprisingly, Mark brought the bottle of water he had been drinking from when I woke up. He stepped closer, and his earthy scent of forest grass filled my nostrils. He held the bottle to my lips while his right hand instinctively reached for my back and helped me sit up properly. “Here, drink some water,” Mark said. I froze. However, my throat felt too dry to refuse. Just then, the female nurse who had rushed out earlier returned with a doctor. They walked over to my bed, and I realized that I was the only patient in the room. “Good morning, Miss Olivia. You’re finally awake. Do you still have a headache?” the male doctor asked. He wore a white doctor’s coat with black trousers and shoes. He held a medical file in one hand while checking the monitor to determine whether he could remove it. “Yes, Doctor. My head aches. When did they bring me here?” I asked hoarsely. My throat still felt dry, even after I had drunk some water. I could not drink much because I could taste Mark’s lips on the bottle. The way he watched me so intensely, with a worried expression on his face, made me uncomfortable. I could not meet his gaze as easily as before. *Why was Mark watching me like a predator? What had he come here to do? He didn’t care about me, did he? He probably only wanted to make sure his mother hadn’t killed me. Otherwise, she would be sent to jail for murder,* I guessed. The doctor cleared his throat. “You were brought here three days ago and fell into a coma. Thankfully, you only suffered from a minor wound on your head. We thought you might have memory loss or a severe head injury because of the extent of the attack.” I scowled, and the doctor reassured me. “Don’t worry. You’re improving just fine, even though you’re only an ordinary Omega.” The words 'ordinary Omega' hurt me, but I forced a tight smile. “Thank you, Doctor.” “You can call me Dr. Sam,” he said with a charming smile. He looked young, but Mark, who stood a short distance from my bed, coughed to remind him of his presence. “Doctor, how is Olivia’s health? Will she be discharged today now that she’s awake?” Mark asked. His yellow eyes remained fixed on me as he spoke to Dr. Sam. I felt uncomfortable beneath Mark's stare. I also had so many questions to ask Dr. Sam about who had brought me to the hospital. I clearly remembered Mark driving away in his car, so how was he here with me? Dr. Sam cleared his throat and turned to Mark. “Your sister, Olivia, seems to be improving. She will be discharged tomorrow, but we need to monitor her closely to ensure that she hasn’t suffered any form of traumatic head injury. Also, warn your mother to desist from hitting Olivia to that extent again. If this happens again, I will personally report her to Alpha Johnson and have her arrested.” Mark’s gaze hardened as I met his eyes and lowered my head. “She is not my sister, Doctor,” he replied. His cold voice made my heart clench. “I know, and that’s why I’m warning you and your family to abstain from child abuse. The next time this happens, it will not end here in the hospital. Excuse me. I need to see my other patients.” Dr. Sam walked out of the room with the female nurse who had accompanied him. The atmosphere grew tense as Mark strolled toward my bed. I did not want to raise my head and look at Mark. I could feel his eyes watching me intensely, and it made me nervous, especially with my swollen face. As Mark neared my bed, I held my breath. His forest-grass scent filled my nostrils. He right reached for my hand, and sparks shot through me at his touch. I quickly withdrew my hand as if it had burned me. Still, I refused to look at his face. “I’m sorry about what my mother and sister did to you,” Mark apologized softly, his eyes fixed on me. I lowered my head and nodded. “You don’t have to apologize. It’s fine. Just stay away from me, and there will be peace.” “Mm,” Mark hummed. Then he asked, “What if I can’t stay away—and I don’t want to?” “Huh?” I raised my head and met his gaze. His eyes held a desirous gleam as our gazes locked.
