Chapter 1
~•Olivia•~ It was 8 a.m. on Saturday morning when I woke up in my room on the first floor of a white mansion. I decided to inform my adoptive mother about my interest in furthering my education at the pack university. As a seventeen-year-old girl, I'd watched many pack members fall sick, some unable to shift. That sparked a desire in me to study medicine—to help them. I climbed out of bed in my white nightdress, slipped on my black slippers, and exhaled heavily. I had to try my luck with my adoptive mother. She was cruel to me but pampered her own daughter, Emily. Still, I had to try. This was my only hope of gaining admission into the pack's university, which was expensive. Nancy worked as a nurse at the pack hospital, and her husband, Wren, was a lawyer for the Alpha's family. Though they were Delta wolves, they were rich from their work and spoiled their two children, Mark and Emily. Mark was twenty-four, hardly ever home. Strangely, he'd returned—he was a basketball star with his own money. Spoiled and with several girlfriends he often brought home, his mother never reprimanded him. She'd encourage him not to take any girl seriously and to wait for his fated mate. I couldn't blame Mark. He was rich, and the young ladies in our pack—the Starfield pack—loved him. I walked down the corridor toward the living room, seeing it was past eight. I had to try, because I had no wolf. Born on a moonless night, I couldn't shift like them. As I unlocked the living room door, I heard Emily's excited voice: "Mom, I still can't believe Daniel Ryan—the Beta's son—asked me to be his girlfriend." My heart clenched. Daniel had asked me first, but I said no. He didn't give me a chance to explain. He spat in my face and shoved me to the ground. "Who would want to date a wolfless girl like you? I was only doing you a favour," he'd spat in front of my high school friends. I was so embarrassed. Emily rushed over, took his hand, and said, "Daniel, you can be my boyfriend. Don't waste your time on this bìtch." My heart ached, but I pushed the hurt aside. They were good for each other, I thought. Daniel glared at me—he was the Beta's son, and my rejection bruised his ego. I tried to avoid him. He wasn't in my set and had only come to school for his younger sister's graduation certificate. I shut my eyes at the painful memory, clenched my fist, and stepped into the living room. The air thickened at the sight of me. The family at the dining table stopped eating, sensing my presence. "Good morning," I greeted with a forced smile. "Morning, Olivia. What do you want here?" Nancy asked, picking up a glass of water. She sat beside her husband, while her son and daughter sat across from her. Their eyes on me made me splutter, but I went straight to the point. "Um, Aunt, I want to further my education at the pack's university." "Hahaha!" Nancy laughed, peering at me. She wore a blue nightdress, fair and beautiful for her age. "Why should you further your education? You're wolfless. Don't even think of university. You should serve as our maid—repayment for all we've spent feeding you up to this size. Isn't that right, honey?" She shifted her gaze to her husband, who nodded. "Yes. My mate is right," declared Mr. George. "Olivia, quit your ambition. You'll serve as a cleaner here." "No! It's been my dream to create medicine to help our pack members heal." I knelt before my foster parents. I was grateful they adopted me and fed me, but I had to further my education. Emily rose from her dining chair in a white nightdress and rushed up to me. "You bìtch! Didn't you hear Mom? You're not going to university. You'll become a servant here and clean the house. Got that?" She smacked my left cheek, sending me to the ground. "That's enough, Emily!" Mark's icy voice made his sister jump. She turned to him. "Mark, are you taking this bìtch's side over me—your sister? Mom, Dad, Mark is favouring Olivia!" Emily cried, pointing at me. The dining room atmosphere thickened as my foster parents eyed Mark suspiciously. "What's come over you, Mark? How can you defend that worthless girl?" Mr. George declared. "We only adopted Olivia to give Emily a younger sister. Since Emily doesn't want her anymore, you won't favour Olivia or see her as a sister. Now apologize to Emily!" Mark peered at his parents, jaw clenched, and rose to his feet. "Mom, Dad, you're both being unjust. I can't sit here and watch you bully Olivia just because she doesn't have a wolf. If you don't want her presence anymore, take her back to the orphanage. I'm out." He walked away without sparing me a glance. My jaw dropped at his blunt words. "Mark! Mark! Come back here!" his parents called, but he'd already left. The sound of his car starting in the garage filled the air as he drove off. "You slut! What did you do to possess my only son?!" Nancy yelled, rushing toward me and descending on me in the living room. Her fists connected to my face, smacking me continuously until I fainted.
