OLIVIA The sound of Mark’s phone ringing broke the awkward silence. “I have to go now, Olivia. Take care,” he said. Mark darted out of the room, and I breathed heavily, feeling exhausted. Just then, the door swung open, and a female nurse entered with a health worker who served me breakfast. I noticed that it was past 11 a.m. The meal consisted of a plate of steaming custard, milk, and two bean cakes. “How do you feel?” the nurse asked with a friendly smile on her pretty brown face. I noticed her resemblance to Dr. Sam. She also looked like Erica Robin, my schoolmate. “I’m fine,” I replied. She nodded with a smile. She was tall and chubby, with long, thick brown hair tied in a ponytail beneath a white nurse’s cap. “All right. Take care of yourself. I’m Nurse Hazel Owen, Dr. Sam’s elder sister. I’m married and have two children,” she introduced herself in a soft voice. I felt my heart flutter at her words. “Nice to meet you, Nurse Hazel,” I replied as I studied her beautiful face. I wondered why she was being so nice to me. Dr. Sam had also been kind, which made me reconsider his offer. However, they were still strangers to me. What if they were pretending to lure me away from my foster parents’ home so they could torture me like my adoptive mother and sister had? “You don’t have to worry. I heard my brother’s offer to you, but he isn’t a bad person. Dr. Sam is only trying to help you out of love. Besides, Alpha Johnson Anderson wouldn’t be happy to find out that your foster parents had treated you poorly. It goes against the adoption rules and regulations of the Starfield Pack,” she said, speaking to me like a friend. “Thank you, Nurse. I’ll reconsider Dr. Sam’s offer, but only after I return home to get my belongings,” I replied softly. Nurse Hazel smiled. “All right. Take care, Olivia.” She walked to the door and exited the room. I resumed eating my breakfast, but my head ached at the thought of moving into a total stranger’s house. If I weren’t a wolfless Omega, I might have felt thrilled at the thought of finding my mate. However, I had no wolf to help me find him—the man the Moon Goddess might have destined for me. When I finished my meal, I pushed the bed table aside and wiped away my tears. I knew that crying would not solve anything. I had to be strong, and that was what I decided to do. I lay back on the bed and soon succumbed to sleep. --------- MARK “Mark, what kept you so long?” my basketball coach, Tyler Benjamin, yelled as I arrived late at the basketball court. We had a basketball match against the Red Ballers from our pack. They did not want to accept defeat, but it was not my place to tell them to give up trying. Aside from playing for the Yellow Ballers basketball team in my pack, I also played against other top packs because I was one of the Starfield Basketball team players. “I’m sorry, Coach. Something came up, and I had to hurry over,” I replied as I joined the court. My coach frowned. “Get into position! The game is about to start!” Coach Tyler barked, his stern voice cutting off my excuse. I ran to join my team. We had the Grayson triplets—Carter, Caleb, and Cooper—who played center. They handled shot-blocking, rebounding, and defense. They were dark-skinned, tall, attractive, identical, and Omegas. We also had Alpha Johnson Anderson’s son, Bryan Anderson. He was twenty-five, dark-skinned, and tall, and he played shooting guard. He could shoot from long range and score many points. He was my teammate, and we were good friends. His Beta, Daniel Ryan, played power forward and focused on rebounding and defense. I played small forward, serving as the team’s versatile player. Together, we made a great team as the Yellow Ballers. When the basketball match began, my mood improved. Logan, my wolf, felt happy because Olivia had finally awakened. Logan told me that Olivia could be my mate. I knew that I had always avoided her and hardly spoke to her, but since she had become a teenager and started developing brẹasts, I couldn’t stop thinking about her rapid growth. I didn’t care whether she had a wolf or not. Olivia was beautiful and possessed everything I wanted in a woman. She was of average height and had striking, long, blonde hair that bounced and waved whenever she let it down. She had the most amazing smile, one that could capture any man’s heart. However, she rarely smiled. I had only caught her laughing a few times with her best friend, Erica Robin. “Mark, Olivia could be your fated mate. Even though she doesn’t have a wolf, she’s still acceptable and beautiful,” Logan said, wanting Olivia too. The fact that she was like a sister to me irritated me. I knew Olivia wasn’t the only child in our pack born on a moonless night, but she was beautiful. I wondered why her real parents had thrown her away. As the fourth quarter began, the Yellow Ballers led the Red Ballers by 120 points to 30. Still, Enzo Lawrence, the leader of the Red Ballers, refused to accept defeat. His father was a billionaire and the sponsor of the basketball game. “Three minutes left! The Yellow Ballers are winning the game!” the supervisor announced as the referee blew the whistle. Enzo and the Red Ballers tried to block the ball, preventing me from passing it and scoring. When I turned to pass to Daniel, I jumped and threw the ball into the Red Ballers’ basket instead, scoring three points for my team. With one minute left, Enzo glared at us as the game continued. His team dribbled and passed the ball until Bryan caught it and made a free throw. He scored one point, bringing our total to 124 points. The Yellow Ballers won. When the match ended, I prepared to leave for the hospital to check on Olivia again before returning home. However, Bryan and Daniel ran over to shake my hand. “You did a great job, Mark!” Bryan exclaimed as he shook my hand and enveloped me in a hug. “Thanks, Alpha,” I replied with a smile. I noticed Enzo glaring at me, but I shifted my attention to Daniel and shook his hand. Then the triplets—Carter, Caleb, and Cooper—came forward and hugged me too. “Go, Yellow Ballers!” we shouted as we posed for a group photo. Afterward, we went to meet our coach. It had been a friendly match against the Red Ballers, who had refused to accept defeat. “Mark!” Coach Tyler called. His lips curled into a smile as I walked over to him. His youngest daughter, Rita, was one of the Yellow Ballers’ cheerleaders. She wore a yellow top, a short skirt, and pink boots. She smiled and waved at me as I approached her father. “You did a great job, Mark. You and the team played well. We have another basketball game next week against the Bright Star Pack, so you need to prepare,” Coach Tyler said. He wore a yellow top, black trousers, and black boots. “All right, Coach. I’ll be there,” I replied with a smile and prepared to leave. “That reminds me, Mark. Rita’s eighteenth birthday is tomorrow. Are you coming? I invited the rest of the team, and they promised to attend,” Coach Tyler said as Bryan, Daniel, and the rest of our teammates walked over to us. “Um, Coach, I have something to take care of at home, so I might not be available to attend Rita’s birthday. I’m sorry,” I replied apologetically. Rita’s smile faded, and Coach Tyler’s expression tightened. “Mark, the party won’t start in the morning. It will begin at 6 p.m., so I’m sure you’ll be free by then,” Coach Tyler said. “All right, Coach. I’ll make time for it,” I replied. I turned to leave, but Rita rushed over, wrapped her arms around me, and made me stiffen. “Thank you, Mark!” Rita giggled. Her rose scent filled my nostrils. I smiled and carefully pulled her away from me. “It’s fine,” I replied bashfully. The young women in the pack could not stop ogling me. Rita was a Delta wolf, and she hoped that I would become her mate. I ran my right hand through my short black hair, smiled, and said, “I’ve got to go.”
