Chapter 4: A Kiss That Changed Everything Rita couldn’t stop smiling. It had been three weeks since Daniel had become CEO, and every day they seemed to discover something new about each other. What had started as a professional relationship was slowly becoming a genuine friendship. Daniel admired Rita’s honesty. Rita admired Daniel’s humility despite his wealth. One Friday evening, after everyone had left the office, Daniel walked to Rita’s desk. “Are you free tonight?” She looked up in surprise. “Why?” “I’ve been working you too hard. Let me make up for it.” She laughed softly. “Is that an order from my boss?” “No,” he replied with a warm smile. “It’s an invitation from a friend.” After hesitating for a moment, Rita accepted. ⸻ Daniel took her to a quiet rooftop restaurant overlooking the city. Soft music drifted through the air as candles flickered on each table. Rita looked around in amazement. “It’s beautiful.” “I thought you’d like it.” Throughout dinner, they talked about everything except work. Daniel told her about losing his parents when he was young and how building his company had become his way of honoring them. Rita shared stories about growing up with Susan, remembering how her elder sister used to protect her from neighborhood bullies. “I’ve always looked up to Susan,” Rita said with a smile. “No matter what happens, she’ll always be my sister.” Daniel listened carefully. “You love her very much.” “She’s family.” Daniel smiled. “That says a lot about the kind of person you are.” As the night grew cooler, they stood on the rooftop balcony, watching the city lights sparkle below. A gentle breeze lifted Rita’s hair. Without thinking, Daniel reached over and tucked a loose strand behind her ear. Their eyes met. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Then Daniel leaned in slowly and kissed her gently. It was tender, unhurried, and filled with the promise of something deeper. When they finally pulled apart, Rita lowered her eyes, blushing. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time,” Daniel admitted. “So have I,” she whispered. He took her hand. “I don’t know where this will lead, but I know I’d like to find out—with you.” A tear slipped down Rita’s cheek, not from sadness but from happiness. “I’d like that too.” ⸻ The following morning, Rita couldn’t keep such wonderful news from the person she loved most. She rushed home to tell Susan. Susan was arranging dresses in her boutique when Rita walked in, practically glowing. “What happened?” Susan asked. “You’ll never believe it.” “What is it?” Rita laughed shyly. “Daniel kissed me.” For a split second, Susan’s smile disappeared. But she quickly forced another one. “He… kissed you?” Rita nodded. “I think we’re falling in love.” Susan hugged her tightly. “I’m so happy for you.” Rita smiled, unaware that her sister’s embrace was hiding silent tears. As soon as Rita left, Susan collapsed into a chair. “So it’s true,” she whispered. “They’re together.” She buried her face in her hands. The pain surprised her. She barely knew Daniel, yet the thought of him loving Rita instead of her filled her with unbearable jealousy. Her phone rang. Vivian. “Did something happen?” Susan’s voice trembled. “They’re together.” Vivian sighed. “So you’re going to give up?” Susan looked toward the boutique mirror. “No.” “Good.” “You’ve spent your whole life watching Rita get everything first.” Susan’s eyes hardened. “This time… I’ll be the one they choose.” ⸻ A few days later, Rita invited Daniel to dinner at her family home. Grace was delighted to meet him properly. “You’ve been so kind to my daughter,” she said. Daniel smiled respectfully. “She’s an incredible woman.” Susan entered the dining room wearing an elegant red dress. Daniel stood politely. “You look lovely this evening.” “Thank you,” Susan replied, her smile lingering a little too long. Throughout dinner, Susan laughed at Daniel’s jokes before anyone else. She offered to refill his drink. Whenever Rita left the table, Susan found reasons to continue talking with him. Daniel remained courteous, seeing nothing more than Rita’s older sister. But Susan was carefully studying him. Learning what made him laugh. Learning what caught his attention. Learning how close she could get without raising suspicion. As the evening ended, Rita walked Daniel to his car. “I had a wonderful time.” “So did I.” He kissed her forehead gently. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” Susan watched from the upstairs window. The sight of them together felt like a knife twisting in her heart. She closed the curtain and whispered into the empty room, “If I can’t have the life I’ve always dreamed of… then neither will you.” Outside, Daniel drove away believing he had just shared a beautiful evening with the woman he loved. Inside the house, the woman who would eventually betray that love had already begun making her move. The greatest heartbreak does not always come from strangers. Sometimes, it begins with a sister’s smile.
