Chapter 1
Susan and Rita woke up to the familiar sound of their mother’s voice echoing through the small bungalow.
“Susan! Rita! If both of you don’t wake up now, you’ll be late again!”
Rita laughed softly as she stretched beneath her blanket. At twenty-three, she had inherited her late father’s gentle heart. She was kind, hardworking, and the type of person who believed everyone deserved love. Susan, twenty-five, was different. She was beautiful, confident, and ambitious. To outsiders, they were the perfect sisters. Only Susan knew how much bitterness she carried inside.
Growing up, people constantly compared them.
“Rita is so humble.”
“Rita is prettier without even trying.”
“Why can’t you be more like your younger sister?”
Every compliment Rita received felt like an insult to Susan. She smiled through it all, but every smile hid another crack in her heart.
Downstairs, their mother, Grace, placed steaming plates of yam and eggs on the table.
“Hurry up,” she said warmly. “You both have work today.”
Rita kissed her mother’s cheek.
“Good morning, Mama.”
Grace smiled.
“My sunshine.”
Susan walked into the dining room moments later.
“So she gets the sweet names again?” Susan joked.
Grace laughed.
“You know I love both of you equally.”
Susan smiled, but her eyes briefly darkened.
If only that were true.
⸻
Later that afternoon, Rita arrived at the marketing company where she worked as a junior executive. She loved her job even though the pay wasn’t much. Her colleagues admired her cheerful personality.
As she arranged some files, the office suddenly became unusually quiet.
She looked up.
A tall man dressed in a perfectly tailored navy-blue suit walked into the building. His expensive wristwatch caught the light, and his confident stride immediately drew everyone’s attention.
The receptionist stood.
“Good afternoon, sir.”
“Good afternoon.”
His deep voice carried authority.
Rita had never seen him before.
One of her colleagues whispered excitedly.
“That’s the new CEO.”
“The CEO?”
“I heard he owns companies across Africa.”
Rita quickly looked away.
She had no interest in wealthy men. From what she’d seen, money often changed people.
The stranger’s eyes scanned the office before briefly meeting hers.
For a second, time seemed to stop.
He offered a polite smile.
She nodded respectfully before returning to her work.
⸻
Meanwhile, Susan was at her fashion boutique across town.
Business wasn’t going well.
Bills had piled up.
Customers preferred buying from larger stores.
As she checked her phone, another loan repayment reminder appeared.
Her smile disappeared.
“I need money,” she whispered.
“And I need it fast.”
Her best friend, Vivian, entered the shop.
“You look stressed.”
“I am.”
“You should find yourself a rich man.”
Susan laughed bitterly.
“If only rich men fell from the sky.”
Vivian shrugged.
“They don’t. You make them notice you.”
Susan stared at her reflection in the mirror.
She was beautiful.
Very beautiful.
Maybe Vivian was right.
⸻
That evening, Rita returned home exhausted.
Susan was already sitting outside, scrolling through her phone.
“Long day?” Susan asked.
“Very.”
“What happened?”
“Our company has a new CEO.”
Susan barely looked interested.
“So?”
“The whole office couldn’t stop talking about him.”
Susan laughed.
“And did he sweep you off your feet?”
Rita rolled her eyes.
“You know me better than that.”
Susan smiled.
“I do.”
But inside, curiosity began to grow.
“A rich CEO…” she thought.
⸻
The following morning, excitement filled the office.
Everyone prepared for the CEO’s official introduction.
When he stepped onto the small stage, every conversation stopped.
“My name is Daniel Cole.”
“I believe hard work should always be rewarded.”
“I don’t judge people by where they come from but by what they can achieve.”
Rita listened quietly.
His speech wasn’t filled with arrogance.
Instead, he spoke with sincerity.
After the meeting, Rita accidentally dropped a folder.
Papers scattered across the floor.
“Oh no…”
Before she could bend down, someone knelt beside her.
Daniel.
“Here.”
He handed her the documents with a smile.
“You should be careful.”
She laughed nervously.
“Thank you, sir.”
“You can call me Daniel.”
“I don’t think HR would approve of that.”
He chuckled.
“Fair enough.”
Several employees watched the exchange.
Whispers immediately spread through the office.
⸻
That evening, Rita couldn’t stop thinking about the encounter.
Not because Daniel was handsome.
But because he had treated her with genuine kindness.
At home, Susan noticed the unusual smile on her sister’s face.
“What are you smiling about?”
“Nothing.”
“There must be something.”
Rita hesitated before saying, “The new CEO helped me today.”
Susan’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly.
“The rich CEO?”
“Yes.”
“What was that like?”
“He was… surprisingly kind.”
Susan leaned back, hiding the sudden spark of interest in her eyes.
Kind. Wealthy. Powerful.
She silently repeated the words.
A plan she couldn’t yet fully see began to take shape.
Outside, rain started to fall, tapping softly against the windows.
Neither sister knew that this chance meeting would change their lives forever.
One would find love.
The other would become consumed by envy.
And before long, blood would no longer be enough to keep a family together. The greatest betrayal of all had already begun—not with an affair or a lie, but with a single seed of jealousy planted deep within Susan’s heart.
