From birth, Kari was never able to shift a complete juxtaposition to her twin sister who was. Yet that never changed anything within her pack, she was still the daughter of an Alpha and despite her inability to shift, she still possessed great power within her own right. However when betrayal leads to tragedy she finds herself in the hands of the vampire Cole and his mysterious brother Kwame, who claims to have promised her father to protect her.

Driven by revenge Kari works with Cole to discover that her father's death was about more than a coup and that whatever his brother is searching for, may be the key to unlocking her true power.

In which a transaction is made.
It is said that long ago the gods roamed the earth. Some accounts describe them doing great things, and some now rare accounts describe them as monsters. And although there are many accounts that say the gods simply left the four races to their own devices one day, there is a different account of how things went. Although it could not matter much because the four races went on to grow and expand. And at the end of the wars, the disease, they managed a shaky truce between the vampires, werewolves, witches and humans…. But does all that remain in the dark stay in the dark? Kira The vehicle came to a abrupt stop, causing her to fly forward, hitting her head against the bars. She braced herself as the doors opened and she felt them grabbing the cage. That was what angered her most of all. After everything, that bastard put her in a cage like some common mutt. They did not move the black cloth that covered the cage but she could smell the sweet scent of wet grass. “Per our agreement.” She heard him say and a sick feeling grew in her stomach. “Though, I cannot imagine what you could possible want with a wolf that cannot shift.” There was a pause and an unfamiliar male voice said playfully, “Oh I’m sure you can imagine a few.” There was more silence and then she heard the sound of car doors opening and closing. Then the sound of an engine cranking before tires spun and rode away. She wondered who he had sold her to, one of her father's enemies perhaps? Yet that voice was unfamiliar to her.  “They did not even have the decency to bring her to us properly.” The unfamiliar man said his voice closer to her now. Suddenly the cloth was tossed away revealing her crouched inside of the cage. She glared at the man who was tall, with dark skin, and crimson colored eyes. To her surprise he broke the lock to the cage with bare hands and opened the door. She hesitated and he asked, “Would you rather stay in here like some common mutt?” She shook her head and cautiously crawled out. When she stood, he let out an annoyed sigh and turned back towards a limo. A man stood beside the passenger door waiting. “Come along.” He called over his shoulder as the driver opened the door.  She did not move, she did not understand. If he were one of her father's enemies why was he treating her with kindness. He must have realized that she was not following because he stopped short of getting in and turned to her. “Look I’ll explain when you get in, we have a long drive ahead of us.” Without waiting to see what she did he got inside. She stood there for a moment, trying to wrap her head around whatever was going on. Maybe he got off on pulling people into a false sense of security. With a frown she willed her feet to move. It was not as if she had anywhere else to go. When she got in he offered her a bottle of water which she gladly accepted. Kofi had not exactly cared if she was well nourished or not. However she did not drink at first. “My brother promised your father long ago to help you when the time came.” He explained softly. “It’s unusual that my brother of all people would promise that sort of thing but, he has left you to me. I am to protect you and train you until the time comes.” She tilted her head to the side and wondered what exactly he was getting out of all this. Anyone her father had an allegiance to she had met. He made sure to take she and her sister to every meeting he had with every pack leader and even lone weres. She opened the water and took a long sip before asking, “Until what?” He shrugged, “Your guess is as good as mine.” “You promised to explain everything on this car ride, but you explained nothing.” She said in irritation. He sighed. “You misunderstood, I can’t explain to you the inner workings of my brothers mind. But he is one of the oldest vampires alive and...” “Vampires?” She froze. Of course it was vampires, there was no way in hell that he would have given her to one of her fathers ally's. It would have been too much like kindness.  “He is wise.” He finished as if he did not just drop a bomb on her already tattered world. She thought that the bastard putting her in a cage was the worst he could do. She had greatly underestimated him. He had sold her to Vampires, their natural enemies. “I’m here to explain the rules of our arrangement. Well, it’s not really an arrangement I bought you, you are mine.” He shrugged and then said softly, "But never-less, you are to train with me as well as escort me to various places for my brother.” “I thought” she said coldly, “that you were supposed to protect me.” He grinned and showed his pearly white fangs, “oh dear I will. It’s perfect, they will think you are the muscle when the whole time....I will protect you with my life, and you will protect me with yours.” “You make it sound as if we are mates.” She muttered. He chuckled and said, “That would be the cherry on top.” He shrugged, “I’ve been around for centuries and I’ve never encountered mine. I doubt my mate will be a wolf who can’t shift...” They rode in silence and eventually she fell asleep. When she awaked the limo was coming to a stop. The driver opened the door and he stepped out before turning to take her hand.  She allowed him to and he quickly went about taking her on a tour of the estate until finally she was shown her room. He left swiftly and she immediately settled in. He told her she had two days to rest and then their training would begin. Cole Cole walked into his brothers office and slammed the door shut. Kwame looked at him patiently as he glared at him. “Are you going to let me in on what exactly you have planned?” Cole asked.  Kwame put his elbow on his desk and rested his hand on the side of his face, as if he were contemplating something. Finally he said, “that girl is the key to me finding someone.” “So why don’t you keep her?” His brother smiled, it was a small smile and something about it made Cole uneasy. He was used to his brother being vague, but he had a feeling this had something more to do with than just finding someone.  Kwame waved his hand and said simply, “You’ll understand soon enough.” He spent the rest of the evening away from her, and when the sun began to rise he slept and dreamt of her. Only in his dream she could shift, and in this dream she died.
