Episode 1:Sign the Divorce Papers
"Sign it."
The moment those words left my husband's mouth, the smile on my face froze. For a second, I thought he was joking.
Tonight was our third wedding anniversary.
The private dining room glowed with soft golden light. Fresh roses decorated the table. Expensive wine sat between us.
I had spent hours preparing for tonight.
Hours choosing a dress.
Hours fixing my hair.
Hours convincing myself that maybe Ethan Kingston would finally look at me the way a husband should look at his wife. Instead, he slid a document across the table.
My eyes dropped to the bold words at the top.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
The air disappeared from my lungs." What is this?" My voice sounded small.
Ethan leaned back in his chair." A divorce agreement."
I stared at him. Waiting. Expecting him to laugh and tell me it was a terrible joke.
He didn't.
The expression on his handsome face remained cold and distant.
Exactly the same expression he had worn for most of our marriage.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
"Ethan..."
"This marriage is over. "The words landed like a physical blow.
I felt my chest tighten.
The restaurant noises around us faded into the background.
Three years.
Three years together.
Three years of trying.
Three years of loving a man who never seemed capable of loving me back.
I swallowed hard.
"Did I do something wrong?" A flicker of irritation crossed his face." There you go again."
"What does that mean?"
"You always make everything emotional, "I stared at him. Of course, I was emotional.
My husband was asking for a divorce on our anniversary. What was I supposed to feel?
Joy?
Relief?
I looked down at my hands. They were trembling. I hated that he could see it.
For years, I had worked so hard to become the perfect wife.
I learned how he liked his coffee, I memorized his schedule,I attended business events he didn't want to attend alone ,I smiled through the whispers.
The judgment.
The laughter.
The endless comments about my appearance, because everyone knew Ethan Kingston.
The billionaire CEO.
The city's most eligible businessman, and everyone knew me, his plus-sized wife,The woman who didn't belong beside him, at least, according to them.
Sometimes I wondered if Ethan secretly agreed.
The silence stretched between us. Finally, I forced myself to ask I was afraid to hear the answer to.
"Why?"
Ethan's jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, the door opened.
A familiar voice interrupted us.
"Ethan."
I looked up, and my entire world shattered.
Sophia.
My best friend.
My chest immediately tightened. She wasn't supposed to be here. I had known Sophia for almost ten years.
She was the person I called whenever life became difficult.
The person who comforted me when Ethan worked late.
The person who told me to keep fighting for my marriage.
Yet something about the way she looked at Ethan made my stomach twist.
She stood beside him.
Too close.
Far too close.
Then she placed a hand on his shoulder.
The gesture was casual.
Comfortable.
Intimate.
My pulse began pounding. Slowly, I looked from Sophia to Ethan, Neither spoke, Neither moved.
The truth hit me before either of them said a word.
"No."
The whisper escaped my lips.
Sophia looked away.
My heart sank.
"No."
This time my voice was louder.
Still nobody denied it.
I felt sick.
Absolutely sick.
"How long?"
Silence.
I laughed.
A broken sound I barely recognized as my own.
"How long?"
Sophia bit her lip.
"Evelyn..."
My stomach dropped.
That wasn't an answer.
It was worse.
It was confirmation.
I looked at Ethan.
His expression never changed.
No guilt.
No shame.
Nothing.
"Tell me."
Finally, he exhaled.
"A year."
The room spun.
A year.
They had been sleeping together for a year.
While I sat across from Sophia sharing coffee.
While I cried on her shoulder.
While she looked me in the eye and pretended to care.
A year.
Three hundred and sixty-five days of lies.
I gripped the table to keep from falling apart.
"You cheated on me."
Ethan didn't respond.
"You cheated on me with my best friend." His silence was answered enough,I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
I refused to let them fall, not in front of them.
Not tonight. Sophia stepped forward.
"Evelyn, please listen—"
"Don't."
My voice shook,"Don't say my name."
She flinched.
Good.
For once, she should be the uncomfortable one, not me,not the woman they betrayed.
The woman they humiliated.
The woman they made a fool of.
"Evelyn, it wasn't planned."
I laughed again.
"What wasn't planned? The first kiss? The second? The hundredth?"
Sophia's face turned pale.
I looked at Ethan.
He didn't defend me.
He didn't defend our marriage.
He didn't even look, sorry.
Instead, he glanced around the room.
As if he were worried someone might overhear.
The realization hurt more than the cheating.
My pain embarrassed him.
Not his actions.
My reaction.
"It's over," he said.
Just like that.
Three years reduced to two words.
It's over.
My chest ached.
I wanted to scream.
Cry.
Throw something.
Instead, I sat perfectly still.
Because somewhere along the way, I had learned that crying never changed anything.
Especially not Ethan.
Then Sophia delivered the final blow.
"I'm pregnant."
Everything stopped.
The words echoed through my head.
Pregnant.
I stared at her.
My mind refusing to process it.
Pregnant.
I slowly turned toward Ethan.
He didn't deny it.
Didn't correct her.
Didn't look surprised.
Which meant he already knew.
My heart cracked.
Not because he loved someone else.
Not because he cheated.
But because he had built an entirely new future while still married to me.
And I hadn't even known.
"We're going to be together," Sophia said quietly.
I looked at her.
Then at him.
The two people I trusted most.
The two people who destroyed me.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Finally, I reached for the pen beside the divorce papers.
Sophia looked surprised.
Ethan looked relieved.
Relieved.
That hurt more than everything else.
My marriage ending wasn't a tragedy to him.
It was an inconvenience finally being resolved.
I signed my name.
Evelyn Hart Kingston.
The signature blurred slightly through my tears.
The moment I finished, Ethan immediately pulled the papers toward himself.
Not a thank you.
Not an apology.
Nothing.
I stood.
My legs felt weak.
But somehow they carried me toward the door.
Each step hurt.
Every breath hurt.
By the time I reached the hallway outside the restaurant, I felt completely hollow.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown Number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
"Hello?"
"Miss Evelyn Hart?"
The voice belonged to a man.
Professional.
Calm.
"Yes."
"My name is Attorney Carter."
I frowned.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?"
"No, but your grandfather did."
I froze.
"My grandfather?"
"Richard Hart."
The name meant nothing.
I had never met my grandfather.
My mother rarely spoke about him.
As far as I knew, he had abandoned our family decades ago.
"What about him?"
There was a brief pause.
Then the lawyer spoke.
"I'm sorry to inform you that Mr. Hart passed away this morning."
I blinked.
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
"What?"
"Before his passing, he left detailed instructions regarding his estate."
I leaned against the wall.
My emotions were already hanging by a thread.
I wasn't prepared for this conversation.
"There must be some mistake."
"There isn't."
My heart pounded.
"What estate?"
Another pause.
Then the lawyer said the words that changed everything.
"You are the sole heir to Hart International."
I stared at the floor.
Unable to speak.
Unable to breathe.
Hart International.
One of the largest business empires in the world.
The company appeared on financial news almost every day.
Everyone knew the name.
"No."
The whisper escaped me.
"That's impossible."
"It is not."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Miss Hart, your inheritance is currently valued at approximately eight billion dollars."
Eight billion.
The number sounded unreal.
Like something from a movie.
I slowly turned toward the restaurant window.
Inside, Ethan and Sophia were sitting together.
Smiling.
Celebrating.
Certain they had just discarded a woman who had nothing.
Neither of them knew the truth.
Neither of them knew that the woman they threw away tonight had just become one of the richest heiresses in the country.
And neither of them knew that this was only the beginning.
"Miss Hart?" Attorney Carter asked.
I wiped away the last of my tears.
For the first time that night, I smiled.
A slow smile.
A dangerous one.
"Tell me everything."
