Chapter 4 Kristen's POV: "Are you kidding me? That jerk is a future Alpha! How could you possibly deal with him?" I frantically looked over my shoulder, worried Klein might appear. "Look, I appreciate your kindness, but no thanks." "He's just an Alpha. I've never considered any Alpha worth my time," the man said coldly, noticing my disbelief. "Tell me your name." "God, why's he being so pushy?" I mumbled to myself. "Fine, whatever. Not like my name's a state secret or anything." "It's Kristen, alright?" I snapped. "Happy now? Let me go already!" He raised an eyebrow and leaned in close, chuckling softly. "Kristen. I'll remember that." I took a deep breath, feeling suddenly weak in the knees. I couldn't understand why he was acting so strangely. "Is this normal behavior for his profession?" I wondered. Just as I thought he was finally letting go, he suddenly wrapped an arm around my waist and tilted my chin up. Before I could process what was happening, he pressed his lips to mine. My eyes widened in shock, but before I could cry out, he moved to the back of my neck and bit down gently. "What are you doing?" I yelped, shoving him away hard. This time, he didn't fight back. "Doing you a favor," he said with a casual shrug. "Now that creep won't be a problem anymore." Confused and flustered, I adjusted my clothes. "You... you're a jerk!" I couldn't bring myself to look at him, feeling my face burn with anger and embarrassment. Muttering a string of curses, I spun on my heel and bolted out of the restaurant. I couldn't wait any longer. It was time to head straight to Klein's villa and get that surveillance footage. Klein's POV: When I came to my senses, Kristen had already escaped. I shook my head, trying to clear the fog. What the hell just happened? It was like someone had flipped a switch in my brain, cutting off all my senses. Could it be that I was affected by a Mind-link? But that was impossible—only the Lycan King could create a Mind-link, and I've never even met the guy! Maybe I was just dizzy, I muttered to myself. I stormed out of the room, vowing to catch that wretch Kristen, mark her for good, use her up, and then kick her to the curb. No one, and I meant no one, had ever dared to reject me. Especially not some worthless human like Kristen! Kristen's POV: I hailed a cab to Klein's villa, where the usual guards were stationed outside. If I showed myself, they would let me in, but then the entire Klein family would know I was there. I needed to find a way to sneak in. I had a better idea. I'd climb over the fence. Werewolves had keen noses, but I'm human. I didn't have a scent they could track. My only option was to sneak in through the back. It wasn't exactly graceful, but I had no choice if I wanted that evidence. I crept to the back of the property, scouting the fence line. Taking a deep breath, I tied my hair back and carefully hauled myself over. It was only a few feet, but that fence was no joke. I barely made it, landing as quietly as I could. I scanned the area, making sure the coast was clear before slipping into the backyard. There was no time to smooth my clothes. I darted from shadow to shadow, making my way toward the front gate. I remembered seeing a security camera there, mounted on a streetlight and pointed right at the entrance. If I could snag that, I'd have everything I needed. Inching closer, I double-checked that no one was around. Coast clear, I scrambled up the tree. Stretching out, I reached for the camera, praying I could yank it free without being spotted. I barely touched the camera when a shrill scream made me jump out of my skin. "That b***h is over there!" Out of nowhere, Alice appeared beneath the tree, pointing at me and shouting to Klein in the distance, "She's trying to steal the footage! Stop her!" Panic surged through me. I hadn't expected Klein to find me so quickly. As I fumbled to grab the camera, Klein was already at the base of the tree. Without a word, he roughly grabbed my ankle and yanked me down. I screamed as I lost my balance, crashing hard onto the ground. The pain was excruciating. I thought I might have broken my leg. The agony left me too weak to even try to get up. Klein loomed over me, his eyes cold and unforgiving. "You stupid w***e," he snarled. "I gave you a chance. Wasn't being my Luna good enough for you? You just had to keep pushing me, didn't you?" Alice lifted her foot and stomped on my hand, then slapped me hard across the face. "Klein, don't put up with this b***h anymore!" She screamed. "She's obviously trying to get the surveillance footage and expose our affair. She wants to ruin your reputation as an Alpha!" My head was spinning from the blow. I struggled to get up, failing repeatedly until Klein suddenly grabbed me by the collar and yanked me to my feet. "Thanks for the heads up, Alice. This little troublemaker thought she could make a fool out of me," Klein growled. Alice's lips curled into an unsettling smile. "Klein, why don't we just get rid of her for good? She's nobody important. We could easily make it look like an accident." To my shock, Klein didn't object. His grip on me tightened. "You're right. I don't need a mate who keeps defying me." I was stunned. How could they be so cruel, even wanting to kill me? I was Klein's mate, after all. I'd foolishly believed he wouldn't seriously harm me. What a mistake that was. I fought with all my strength, but the chokehold left me gasping for air. My vision started to darken. Was this really how it would end? No, it couldn't be! Suddenly, Klein's eyes widened as if he'd spotted something. He flipped me over like a rag doll, examining my back. His shocked exclamation filled the air. "What the hell? Why does she have a royal imprint?" I had no clue what Klein was talking about. All I knew was that he'd finally let go of me, much to Alice's displeasure. "What are you doing?!" Alice snapped. "Klein, how could you let her go?!" I ignored their bickering, focusing instead on gulping down fresh air. It felt heavenly. I clutched my throat, coughing violently. Klein's brow furrowed, his face a mask of disbelief. "She's got a royal imprint. She's been marked..." Alice scoffed, her lips curling in disgust. "So what? Turns out this little slut's already been screwed. All the more reason she can't be your mate!" Klein exploded in frustration. "You don't know s**t! The lycans are royalty. I can't afford to piss them off..." While they were busy arguing, I secretly gathered my strength. In one swift move, I jumped up and bolted for the exit. "Klein, grab her!" Alice shrieked. "Relax, she didn't get the surveillance footage," Klein called out behind me. I ran for my life, not daring to look back, clutching my phone for dear life. True, I hadn't snagged the surveillance video, but I'd started recording audio on my phone before I hit the ground! "Just you wait, Alice, you b***h. And Klein, you scumbag. I won't let you off easy. I'm going to reject him and survive this mess!" Alice's POV: "That i***t Klein let that damn b***h escape! I'm absolutely livid!" I thought. "Klein, we can't just let this slide," I said. "Even without evidence, she could still report you. She's your mate, after all!" Klein snapped impatiently, "So what do you want me to do?" I hesitated before suggesting, "Well... couldn't you just reject her?" "No!" Klein's response was immediate and fierce. "Even if she dies, she'll still be my woman!" I felt a wave of disappointment, but at this point, I had to protect both our reputations. As he finished speaking, his eyes took on a distant gleam. I knew he was initiating a Mind-link with someone. It seemed Kristen's fate was already sealed.
