Chapter 5
Kristen's POV:
I ran all the way, my heart pounding like a drum until I passed through the woods and reached the path outside the villa area. I quickly dove into an alley, evading Klein and Alice as they continued their pursuit. Once I confirmed that there was no one around, I let out a breath of relief, leaned against the wall, and tried to calm my rapid breathing.
With evidence in hand, even after experiencing a life-or-death moment, I felt less fearful. Rubbing my neck, I immediately dialed the Werewolf Court, telling the operator that I wanted to sue Klein.
We had a smoother conversation than I had imagined. I promised to submit evidence within three days, but I also knew that Klein would now be aware of my intention to sue him.
However, thinking about what Klein had just said filled me with a strange feeling. "Did he let me go just because I have the mark of the Lycan royal family? What is going on? How could I possibly have any connection to the Lycan royal family?"
I touched the back of my neck but found nothing.
"Uh, maybe he was mistaken. After all, he is practically blind."
When I returned to school, I spent the rest of the day in calmness. Alice must have heard the news and didn't return to the dorm. I informed Lily about the situation. When she learned that Klein intended to kill me, she cursed him for half an hour. "He's such a scumbag!"
I comforted her. "It's okay. At least now I have a way to deal with them." As long as I told the Werewolf Council about Klein's attempt to harm me, they would warn Klein and the Alpha of the Twilight Pack, which meant I would be safe.
However, the next day after class, as Lily and I walked downstairs to the dorm, a black luxury sedan slowly stopped in front of me. The familiar license plate and body made me immediately alert, thinking, "Isn't that Irene's car? Why is she here?"
My relationship with Irene, my mother, had been poor. Ever since she became Beta Deren’s second chance mate and completely forgot she has a human daughter, I moved out of the house and into college. I never contacted her since then. It had been about six months since we last met, and I felt that her coming to find me couldn't be for anything good.
The car door slowly opened, and Irene stepped out, elegant as always. She wore a fur coat and looked at me expressionlessly. Her gaze carried deep disappointment and anger, a look that had oppressed me since childhood.
"Get in the car." Her voice was cold, and there was no room for negotiation.
Irene's appearance drew attention from those around us. Because of my bad reputation for plagiarism, I was somewhat of a celebrity at school. Lily looked at me with concern, holding onto my arm. I shook my head at her. "It's okay. You go back first."
Lily knew she couldn't interfere and could only softly say, "Okay, I'll wait for you."
I was dissatisfied with Irene's condescending attitude, but I wanted to see what she had to say.
As soon as I got into the car, she coldly reprimanded me. "Kristen, what are you doing? Your stepfather called me, saying you got into big trouble at Klein's villa."
I instantly understood everything—Klein had already informed Beta. I seethed, "He actually spread the news to Irene this quickly! And she came to question me about it! Damn it!"
I sneered, taking a deep breath, "Mom, Klein almost killed me. Did you know that?!"
"Don't be ridiculous. How could he possibly harm his mate?" She nonchalantly lit a cigarette. "Klein is an Alpha! Don't you realize how important it is for us to maintain a good relationship with him?"
I tightened my grip on my phone, struggling to control my anger. "You'd rather believe Alice than trust me? He really almost killed me, and the marks on my neck are proof!"
I glared at her angrily. She looked at me, slightly taken aback, but still showed no sign of backing down.
"Even if that's the case, you can't take him to court. Kristen! He is an Alpha. You are just an ordinary human, not to mention your stepfather is Klein's father's Beta. You shouldn't oppose him. The only thing you can do is obey him and become his mate. That way, you won't cause us trouble."
A wave of helplessness swept over me. Irene had always been like this, caring only about her own interests and never considering my feelings. "Mom, I don't want to be his Luna. I don't want to live in such control and fear."
She fell silent for a moment and then sneered, "You really disappoint me, Kristen. You're so selfish."
I felt tears welling up, and my suppressed emotions finally erupted. "I never had a choice, did I? In your eyes, I'm just a pawn that can be manipulated at will."
Her expression changed abruptly. Suddenly, she raised her hand and slapped me hard. At that moment, the whole world seemed to quiet down, with only the stinging pain on my face reminding me of what had just happened.
"How dare you to say that to me!" She gritted her teeth, her eyes filled with disappointment and anger.
I covered my face, feeling profound disappointment and chill. I looked at her, tears swirling in my eyes, but I struggled to hold them back.
"Mom, is this what you call love? You only care about your interests and never about my true feelings. No matter what, I will not go back to Klein, nor will I become his Luna."
I resolutely got out of the car. "Go on and enjoy your time with your Beta mate. I will fight this lawsuit to the end!"
"Kristen!" She shouted behind me in frustration, but I pretended not to hear and left without looking back.
Back in the dorm, I angrily sat down on a chair. When Lily saw I was back, she asked with concern, "Kristen, are you okay?"
I took a deep breath. "My mom told me not to sue Klein, saying that it would embarrass her."
"What?!" Lily exclaimed. "How could she say that? Does she know Klein wants to kill you?"
"I told her. But she only stood on the side of the Beta and Alpha." I laughed self-deprecatingly.
Lily sighed and comforted me with a hug. "Oh, Kristen. Don't be sad. You still have me..."
Just then, my phone rang. I glanced at the screen. It was an unfamiliar number. After hesitating for a moment, worried it might be from the Werewolf Court, I answered the call.
"Kristen?" A low, magnetic male voice came through the line.
I frowned slightly. "Yes. Who are you?"
"It's me. Don't you remember my voice? We just met." His voice held a hint of amusement.
Upon hearing this, I suddenly realized he was the werewolf p********e I had a brief encounter with.
"Why do you have my number?" I asked, surprised.
Lily looked at me curiously. I felt a bit embarrassed because I didn't intend to hide this from my close friend. I should have been honest with her about this man.
"I can if I want to." he replied casually, giving me an unexpected answer.
I thought to myself, "He investigated me? How does he have such confidence?"
"Do you need something?" I became cautious. Even though I had been intimate with him, I actually knew nothing about this man.
"I forgot to tell you that you left a hairpin at my place. You can come and get it."
I widened my eyes instantly as his words sounded more like an invitation.
"No, it's fine." I tried to sound carefree. "That thing isn't important. Just throw it away."
"Why? Is it that you don't want your mate to find out you're meeting with me? But didn't you say he was a scumbag?" His tone lost its previous joking manner.
I gasped in surprise. The mention of Klein made me feel inexplicably embarrassed. "He is! I'm not afraid of him knowing who I meet!"
"Then you need to come to get the hairpin. I don't like throwing away other people's things." The voice on the phone was low and magnetic, carrying an irresistible charm.
I recalled that passionate first night, unable to suppress a flutter of excitement. Maybe the recent argument with Irene had left me feeling down, and his invitation felt like an escape from reality.
"You can mail it to me." I tried to make one last stand.
I thought his invitation would finally come to an end, but unexpectedly, he paused for a moment and stated directly, "Actually, I just wanted to see you."
"Oh my gosh!" I exclaimed inwardly, as I never expected him to be so straightforward. I felt my heart begin to race.
"Go for it, Kristen!" Lily gently poked my hand beside me and whispered with a smirk, "Starting a new romance is a great way to heal the wounds!"
I glared at her, unsure of how much she understood. I bit my lip and ultimately relented. "Alright, should we still meet at that hotel?"
"No need. I'll come pick you up, how about that?" He said.
At this point, I couldn't pretend anymore. He wanted a date, and the hairpin was just his excuse.
Thinking about the cheating Klein, I felt that it wasn't unreasonable to have some fun with another werewolf, so I readily agreed. "Okay. But don't drive down to the dorm. Just wait for me at the school gate."
Then I told him my school's address.
"Alright, I'll be there in half an hour."
After hanging up, Lily plopped down beside me. "Spill it. Who is he?"
"I met a werewolf at a bar on the day Klein cheated, and I slept with him. I've been wanting to tell you, but I couldn't find the right moment."
I shrugged, my face burning from the earlier teasing, but I still didn't dare to tell Lily he was a call boy.
"Oh my, is he handsome?" Lily asked excitedly.
"Yeah," I answered honestly.
"That's great! Hurry up and go! I'll help you pick an outfit!" Lily was even more excited than I was, jumping up to open the wardrobe and choosing a dress for me.
Yet I felt a strange sensation inside.
That werewolf wasn't completely unfamiliar to me. After all, we had slept together, and I had seen him twice. Wait, I still didn't know his name.
"It's just a game, so don't fall for a werewolf again," I warned myself.
At Lily's strong urging, I changed into a beige dress I had never worn before, and then she pushed me out of the dorm.
I glanced at the time. There were still ten minutes until the agreed meeting time.
Along the way, many people pointed at me, but I pretended not to see.
As I got closer to the school gate, my mood gradually turned anxious.
