chapter 1: The Edge of the Abyss
Chapter 1: The Edge of the Abyss
The rain in Capital City didn’t just fall; it drowned.
Standing on the edge of the abandoned bridge, twenty-one-year-old Alice Winter let the freezing drops plaster her blonde hair to her face. Her thin, 5'6" frame shivered violently, not from the cold, but from the raw, hollow ache burning inside her chest.
Just twelve hours ago, she had been an heiress. She had a family, a home, and a fiancé she loved more than life itself. Now, she had nothing.
“How could you do this to us, Alice?” Her father’s booming voice still echoed in her ears, vibrating with disgust. Adam Winter hadn’t even looked her in the eyes when he threw the fraudulent corporate documents at her face. He hadn't listened to her pleas. Why would he? The evidence was "ironclad."
It didn't matter that the evidence had been meticulously fabricated by Grace Bishop—the woman Alice had called her best friend since childhood. It didn't matter that Luke Anderson, Alice’s own fiancé, was the one who had planted the files in her room. When the trap snapped shut, Alice’s toxic stepmother, Martha, had been right there to whisper poison into her father’s ear, making sure Alice was stripped of her inheritance, disowned, and cast out into the streets like garbage.
They had taken everything. Her name, her dignity, her future. They had framed her for their own corporate greed and left her to die in the shadows.
Alice closed her eyes, looking down at the churning, black river below. The water promised an end to the pain. A quiet, final escape.
"Is that really how you want their story about you to end?"
A calm, low voice cut through the roaring storm.
Alice gasped, spinning around. Her V-shaped face was pale as she stared at the figure stepping out from the gloom of the bridge's support beams. The man wore a timeless, dark trench coat, his features obscured by the shadows of a wide-brimmed hat. He carried an aura of absolute stillness.
"Who are you?" Alice choked out, her voice raspy from crying. "Leave me alone."
"My name is Scott Orland," the man replied, his voice smooth, devoid of malice but dripping with an unnatural authority. "And I don't like seeing valuable investments go to waste. You have two choices tonight, Alice Winter. You can step off that ledge, let them win, and become a forgotten footnote in their rise to power. Or, you can choose to make them pay."
Alice’s breath hitched. Make them pay. The words ignited a tiny, volatile spark of heat beneath her frozen skin. "Pay? How? I have nothing left. No money, no power, no one to believe me."
"I can give you all of those things. And more," Scott said, stepping closer. He reached into his coat and pulled out two items. The first was a heavy, dark parchment document. The second was a strange, intricately designed silver pocket watch. It didn't tick like a normal watch; its gears whirred with a deep, rhythmic hum that sounded almost like a mechanical heartbeat.
"Sign this contract, accept the watch, and you will enter a world that can give you the ultimate vengeance," Scott murmured, offering a sleek black pen. "But know this: once you sign, your soul belongs to the organization. You will train, you will fight, and you will obey. Choose. Will you let them go, or are you willing to take revenge and make them pay for all that they did to you?"
Alice stared at the document. She thought of Grace’s smug smirk as she took Luke’s hand. She thought of her father’s cold rejection. The sorrow within her collapsed, hardening into a dense, unbreakable diamond of pure, unadulterated rage.
She didn't want to die. She wanted them to burn.
"Give me the pen," Alice said, her voice dropping all traces of fear. "I want to watch them bleed."
She grabbed the pen and sliced her signature across the heavy parchment. The moment the ink dried, Scott handed her the strange watch. The second her fingers brushed the cold metal, a sudden, blinding vertigo washed over her. The sound of the rain vanished. The bridge dissolved.
When Alice blinked her eyes open, the storm was gone.
She was standing in a vast, high-tech underground chamber. The walls were reinforced steel, and the air smelled of ozone and sweat. In the center of the room, several figures in tactical gear were undergoing brutal combat drills. A massive, stylized 'B' logo was engraved into the metallic floor.
"Welcome to the Blackwood Organization, recruit," a harsh voice barked from behind her.
Alice spun around to see a sharp-featured man in an immaculate, tailored three-piece suit, his posture rigidly military. His knuckles were covered in faint scars.
"I am Branch Manager Blake Grisham," the man said, looking down at her thin build with clear disdain. "I don't care who you were on the outside, heiress. Here, you are nothing but raw meat. If you want to survive the trials, if you want to rise in rank and get the revenge you sold your soul for, you will have to prove you are worth more than the dirt on my shoes."
Alice clutched the strange watch tightly in her hand. Looking around the cold, intimidating facility, a chilling realization settled deep in her gut.
Scott hadn't just been a savior. She had just made a literal deal with the devil. But as she looked at her reflection in the polished steel wall—her blonde hair damp, her eyes burning with a newfound, lethal focus—she knew there was no turning back.
The training was going to be a living hell. But Alice was ready to become a demon if it meant tearing her enemies down to the ground.
