Prologue Sienna:
THWACK. I grunt as the trees branches swat at my face. Don’t feel it, just keep going! I tell myself. I pump my arms trying to make my bare feet push faster on the mossy forest floor, the crashing I hear behind me tells me they’re still there. I hear laughter as one of them grunts in pain.
“Oh Sienna” Tristan singsongs my name, sounding too close for my liking.
“We decided!” Hunter shouts after him.
“Whoever catches you first gets the honor of having you first!” Ryan finishes. I hear all three of them laugh as tears blur my vision.
“Like hell you will.” I grumble to myself. I want to shout it back but I don’t, even though I’m still making more noise than I would like, I’m quieter than they are, and they’re damn loud, so they shouldn’t be able to actually hear me anyway, they’re tracking me just by my scent. Which I have a plan for.
I just have to make it to the cliffs edge where the sea awaits below. My heart is pounding against my ribs and I have a stitch in my side but I don’t dare slow down. I can see the trees starting to thin out ahead of me and distant shapes of rocks. I try to push myself faster hearing their grunts closer behind me now.
I turn to look just as I make it past the tree line and my heart stops. I can see them now about five lengths behind me. Tristan’s smile is terrifyingly dark. I whip my head forward and keep going. Just a few more steps!
“Come on pet! What are you gonna do? Jump?” Tristan asks, amusement lacing his tone.
“Yes!” I scream back. “f**k!” Hunter exclaims, they weren’t expecting that response, the fall could kill me since I haven’t shifted yet. And even though they’re Alphas it could kill them too for the same reason.
“Don’t!” Tristan snarls as I take one step, then two before I leap off the edge. I feel his fingers brush against my back trying to catch me but it’s too late.
My body free falls. “I did it.” I breathe to myself as I plummet, my words being swept away by the air whooshing around me. I smile, damn the consequences this might bring me. I don’t care if I die as long as I’m away from them! The icy waters engulf me as I hear the angry roar come from the cliffs edge.
