Elena Carter stepped off the plane, inhaling the crisp New York air as she adjusted the strap of her leather bag. The city stretched before her—towering skyscrapers, endless yellow taxis, and streets filled with people moving like they had somewhere important to be. As she stepped into the back of a cab, she let out a slow breath. No looking back. No regrets. The next morning, Elena stood in front of the towering glass building of Montgomery & Co., nerves twisting in her stomach. The job meant everything to her—financial stability, a career, a new identity. She straightened her black blazer and walked in. The office was sleek and modern, buzzing with quiet energy. Assistants rushed past with manuscripts in hand, phones rang in the background, and the scent of fresh coffee lingered in the air. “Elena Carter?” A friendly voice pulled her out of her thoughts. She turned to see a blonde woman in her early thirties, dressed in a sharp navy dress. “I’m Sara, the senior editor. You must be the new assistant.” “Yes, that’s me,” Elena replied, forcing a confident smile. “Welcome to chaos.” Sara smirked. “Let’s get you settled.” Rachel gave her a quick tour of the floor, introducing her to the staff before leading her to her small but cozy desk near the large windows. As Elena was settling in, Rachel leaned in and lowered her voice. “You’ll be assisting Adrian Montgomery,” she said. “Be prepared—he’s… intense.” Elena frowned. “Intense how?” Sara sighed, as if debating how much to say. “Brilliant, but moody. Charming, but distant. He’s a mystery even to those of us who’ve worked with him for years. Just don’t take anything personally.” Before Elena could respond, a deep, commanding voice interrupted them. “Miss Carter?” Elena turned—and for a moment, she forgot to breathe. Standing before her was Adrian Montgomery. Tall, impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit, and exuding an air of quiet authority, he had the kind of presence that demanded attention. His dark eyes, sharp and unreadable, locked onto hers, sending an unexpected shiver down her spine. “I assume you’re the new assistant,” he said coolly.
