ELSIE
I sat in stunned silence, my mind racing with questions. What did Ethan mean by "my role" in my father's death? And how could he protect me from the rival faction that killed him?
Ethan leaned forward, his eyes intense. "Your father was a key player in our organization, Elsie. He had many enemies, and now that he's gone, you're in danger too."
I shook my head, trying to process this information. "I don't understand. Why would anyone want to hurt me?"
Ethan's expression turned grim. "Because you're your father's daughter. You're a Wilder, and that makes you a target."
I felt a chill run down my spine. I had never thought about being a target before.
Ethan continued, "I want to offer you protection, Elsie. My family's resources and influence can keep you safe."
I hesitated, unsure if I could trust Ethan. But what choice did I have? I was in over my head.
"Okay," I said finally. "I accept your offer."
Ethan nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Good. I'll assign some men to watch over you. But you need to be careful, Elsie. Trust no one."
I nodded, feeling a sense of unease. Who could I trust if not Ethan?
As I left Ethan's mansion, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was trapped in a web of deceit. Everyone seemed to be hiding something, and I was just a pawn in their game.
Over the next few days, I noticed strange men lurking around my campus, watching me. Ethan's men, I assumed. But it didn't make me feel safer. Instead, I felt like I was living in a fishbowl, with everyone watching my every move.
And then there were the strange messages. Notes left on my car windshield, warning me to "drop the investigation" and "forget about your father's death." Who was sending these messages? And what did they want from me?
I tried to focus on my studies, but my mind kept wandering back to Ethan and the mysterious world he inhabited. What secrets was he hiding? And what lay ahead for me?
As the days turned into weeks, I found myself drawn deeper into Ethan's world. I attended family gatherings and meetings, trying to make sense of the complex web of alliances and rivalries.
But the more I learned, the more I realized how little I knew. And the more I wondered if I could ever escape the web of deceit that had ensnared me.
