17 Politics A gentle knock on the door woke Zahra from a fitful doze. It was Tahmineh, telling her that Rezvan wanted to see her. The invalid was sitting up in bed. She didn’t want to be read to, but was happy to reminisce about the past. ‘Such wonderful parties, Zahra,’ she said dreamily. ‘We had a glittering life!’ Although she smiled as she listened and made the right noises, Zahra’s thoughts wandered. She’d been invited to dinner at Nasim’s, without Ahmad this time—maybe Nasim would tell her more about what was going on. To her relief, Rezvan’s nurse came into the room and interrupted the the older woman’s monologue.
