16 A House Call The weather was pleasant and Karim walked home leisurely, his shoes still warm from being in the sun. He pushed open the side gate and let himself in the front door. The house was completely silent. A cold lunch had been laid out for him in the small dining room. In spite of the sunshine, he felt gloomy and a bit lonely. After lunch he drifted into the library; he hadn’t played the piano for a few days and it always cheered him up. Karim found the paperback copy of the Shahnameh and put it on a table. He looked at the piano and felt an overwhelming need to play, to lose himself in music and forget the disturbing things he’d heard in the mosque.
