The mating games
Layla Whispercrest
...
“Now who’s ready for the mating games?!”
Applauses immediately boomed the entire hall, mostly with the excitement of girls who wanted to meet their mates.
“Step forward, line by line, to apply, ladies and gentlemen!”
It wasn’t only for females. The males also use it as a technique to find their mates. There were different levels of the mating games.
The Bronze, Silver and Gold.
The Bronze consisted of normal pack members finding their mates, the Silver consisted of high-rank members in our packs finding their mates, while the Gold level included different powerful packs merging with ours to find their mates. Once a female participates in the Gold level, she will be taken away by the powerful pack members who claim her.
We were in the 21st century, yet the werewolves fulfilled the mating rituals to sustain each packs. According to them, tradition was a thing passed by generations and when it wasn't paid attention to, it faded.
“Aren’t you joining? Gosh! I’m literally excited to participate in the Gold level!” Andrea, my friend, let out.
“Weren’t we raised for this?” I asked her only for an Omega servant to show up.
“My lady, the Alpha and Luna summon you.”
“I will be right there.” I muttered, wondering why mum and dad would suddenly call me. “Andrea, I will be back.”
I paced my footsteps with the Omega servant who led me to where they were, before going out. I entered the room, chin up like the Alpha’s daughter I was raised to be.
“Layla, we have something to tell you about the mating games.”
I sat down with my back straight, as I stared at them. They prepared me for a mate all my life.
“What is it, Mum?”
From the tight expressions on their faces, they seemed like they were bracing themselves up. I couldn't help but wonder if this was a top secret? Unlike before, they closed the doors and not even their Beta and Gamma were in the room. My little siblings, Vera and Aarav were currently playing outside. In fact, I could hear them.
My parents' silence made me nervous.
“Dad?”
“Listen to me carefully, Layla Whispercrest. You can participate in the Bronze and Silver levels of the mating games. But one level is totally off-limits for you,” Mum said.
“The Gold level isn’t what everyone thinks of it to be. While the pack members think it’s a winning stage that pairs you with a powerful pack member, it’s all lies. It’s done once every ten years, and no girl who was taken ever comes back.”
“W-What?!” I watched as they constructed those words.
"We are sorry, Layla." Dad said.
"You're sorry? What of the other girls, what will be their reaction if they find out?" I said with fisted palms.
"We do not know but what we do want is for you to be safe." Mum said.
"H-How?" I said.
"You need to go to your room. Lock yourself, and do not come out until all of this is over. We'll figure something out on you finding your mate, after this is over."
"Not fair." I replied mum.
"Life hasn't been fair to us either." she told me. "This is the only way to sustain our pack, the powerful packs keep us protected."
"All you have to do is to go to your room and trust us." Dad said. "Now."
I stood up that second walking to the door. A little part of me hoped that they'd call me back and tell me it was a prank. However, as I slammed the door shut, none of that happened. As I trailed yhe corridors, I couldn't help but think.
Everything they’ve ever taught me was a lie. I was a virgin and the eldest daughter. Throughout my life as the Alpha’s offspring, I had several teachers who prepared me to be mated and now…
This level they all push themselves to compete for the wasn’t ideal for anyone?
“Common Layla, let’s go!” My friend exclaimed. She pulling me excitedly, only for me to stay tight in my spot.
“No, Andrea.”
I said those words, wondering if I should warn her or not. “No? Are you kidding me?”
Her face held a look of hurt. “But we promised to be each other’s plus one.”
“The only plus one you’ll end up having in the end is your mate. I suggest you go now.”
I walked away from the arena of the mating games, hiding myself in the crowd who cheered.
I wanted to warn her.
But I couldn’t.
Doing so will only ruin the reputation of my father and mum, who were the Alpha and Luna of our pack, SilverMoon. Moreover, our pack was a normal sized pack, with low defense skills. Mum and dad said the mating games sustained them.
“Let the Bronze level begin!”
On my way to my room, I watched as the pack members found their mates with happy expressions, wondering if I'd be lucky enough to find my mate in the pack or not. Remembering mum and dad's words I made my way when something else caught my eye.
The Silver level.
“And, the Silver stage for the high-rank pack members begins!” This didn’t take long as only a limited number of the Elder’s sons and daughters found theirs.
I watched them curiously daydreaming. Totally forgetting I was supposed to be inside when some voice boomed through the speaker.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The Gold level!!!”
The minute the gates opened, cheers immediately resonated as the powerful packs entered our territory. I swallowed, trying to head to my room, only to sniffle an enticing scent from the men who had just walked in.
My wolf became entirely jumpy and excited only for our eyes to connect to who it radiated from.
Our pack’s sworn enemy – Alpha Jaxon of Creed Pack.
