Elijah's POV
After switching seats in the car with Avery, I drive us straight to the hospital as legally and safely as I can, while still having so much haste.. Mostly because I now NEED and WANT to know what's going on with my lady.. we thought it was just a drunken accident because of how it looked but with her memories coming back we now know it wasn't that at all.. maybe it was an accident but maybe it wasn't.
Time to figure out what's really going on and as quickly as we can! Luckily the traffic goes in our favor, making the travels so much faster than I at least expected.
"Stay here and I'll be right back.. I'm just going to sneak in real fast because I have a copy of your file in my stack of assigned files." I explain to Avery as she just nods at me. I can tell that her mind is reeling, I'm sure she is feeling a little freaked out about this whole situation.
I step out of her car, jogging across the parking lot and into the door on the side of the building to be as inconspicuous as possible. After taking the stairs up to my floor, I sneak in past all the fast-paced nurses, running around with things to do and not worrying about me.
I get to my main center, quickly going into my files as I pull hers out, taking my phone out and quickly taking pictures of her file. With those pictures taken, I can put the files back into the cabinet.
"Hey Eli.. I haven't seen you around lately I hope you're doing alright." Nancy states from behind me, causing me to jump as I push the file cabinet closed with me flipping around. Of course I quickly get rid of the evidence, putting my phone into my pocket.
"Hey Nancy, thanks for your concern.. but I have been busy hanging out with my lady and helping her out.. she is having problems with her Ex and such." I vaguely explain to her trying to not seem suspicious whatsoever.
I watch her nod at me, "I didn't know you had a lady.. congrats.. I hope you an get stuff figured out for her because dealing with your partners crazy Ex is always stressful.. Speaking from experience over here.. so good luck.. see you later." She states smiling at me, before patting my back, then walking away.
I let out a sigh of relief while turning, then leaving the building with a haste to get back to the ladies that are waiting for me as we speak. I arrive at the vehicle as quickly as I could, jumping right back into the driver's seat.
"Hey, thanks for waiting ladies.. I got pictures of the files but I was stopped by one of my coworkers so I talked with her for a second so she wouldn't be suspicious of what I was doing there. Because technically speaking this is illegal for me to take pictures of a file, even if it's yours.. So please don't rat me out." I explain to them, they both shake their heads as Avery states without hesitation, "I would never!"
I can't help but smile at that reaction as I turn on the engine, letting it sit on for just a minute as I open my phone and pulling up the pictures to show them.
Avery quickly takes my phone as she zooms in and reads the information, so I start the drive to the town junk yard.. knowing that's exactly where they would have taken the vehicle since it was destroyed in the crash.
"Eli? What's Rohypnol?" Avery softly asks me as the confusion is instantly evident across my face. "Why would you ask that baby?" I wonder as she points at it on my phone. "It says I had it in my system along with the alcohol." She explains as I pull over and grab the phone out of her hand and confirming she is seeing the right word.
"Baby.. I don't know how to tell you this and how I never noticed this.. but you were drugged.. this is better known as the date rape drug.. No wonder you were so messed up." I explain to her as her eyes go even more wide, opening then shutting as the wheels turn in her head.
"Stevie? Do you know where I was at drinking at the night I got into my wreck? Or know of a way to find out?" Avery asks looking into the back seat as we hear her answer almost instantly. "Yea... well kinda.. you forgot your wallet at work, so you called me to bring it to you at the hotel bar down the street from our work.. but you had only started to drink and were having fun with the people at the bartop talking about where all of you were going to go to next.. but I didn't know any of them and I definitely don't know where you went after that." Stevie explains to her as I pull the car over in front of the junk yard.
We all get out as we head to the main gate door, ringing their doorbell. "Yes? What can I do for you?" The doorbell transmitter blares out at us, so I step forward to answer.. pushing the button to respond. "Hello.. we were hoping to look at my lady's car that was wrecked months ago."
"Ok I'll let you in but there is no guarantee I have your vehicle if it's been months. Walk to the main building and we will look your information up." He explains as I nod and reply, "Yes sir, be there in a minute." We can hear the doors automatically unlock letting us head in. So we quickly make our way to the main office as instructed, just to be greeted by a huge man. He has to be around 7 foot tall. The girls instinctively step behind me since they are so much smaller then he is and obviously intimidated by his size and stoic facial expression.
I extend my hand to him to exchange our pleasantries, just to make sure he knows we are not here with problems.. just simply wanting his help if possible. "Hello sir, thank you for letting us in.. we were hoping we could check out the car that my lady got into a wreck with.. about 4 months ago.. we have her information for you as well." I explain further for him as he shakes my hand and nods still giving us a very stern look before responding. "Follow me then."
We head inside the building as he leads us over to a very unorganized, dirty looking desk. So many items and files stacked one on top of the other, looking like years of unorganized abuse went into this look.. But maybe he is just one of those really unorganized but still organized men.. I have seen some peoples offices look awful but if you ask them where something is, then they can tell you right away where it's at.. So I'm going to try to give him the benefit of the doubt.. mostly because he is the only option. There are just files and papers scattered all over the computer that she has to shove out of the way just to access the keyboard.. in this moment, I'm starting to get the feeling he might not be able to help us, but I guess it never hurts to try.
"What's the name on the title? Make and year of the vehicle?" He asks me as Avery runs over to his side giving him all the information he needs as he types away into his computer. I take a look around the room just meandering, plus observing the chaos that is this mess of an office.
I'm not OCD by any means but this place is stressing my nerves out to the point I want to try and organize.. but of course that's not going to actually happen. So I have to turn myself around, wandering back over to my lady's side as I hear the man say. "Oh that's strange... I do remember this vehicle.. the man that's on the title for that car told me to impound this a day after the cops released it from investigation.. I remember because he slipped me a hundred dollar bill to make sure this got taken care of personally."
"Why would your Ex want to get the vehicle destroyed that he never drove?" Stevie asks as I bluntly suggest, "Maybe to get rid of any left over evidence."
This comment causes their eyes to go wide as the big man gulped to himself before explaining. "I didn't know anything about any of that.. he had the information and paperwork I needed and even paid for the amount to tow it over here without me even saying anything.. So I took it and of course the extra tip, because I wouldn't ever turn that down. But the cops said it was good to go.. so I'm sure they took any evidence there was to be seen.. so just talk with the cops if you have any questions."
"Thanks for your time sir we appriciate it.. have a great day " I state to him as I take hold of Avery's hand leading her outside of the building with Stevie following close behind.
We get back into her car as Avery asks, "Do you really think my Ex would be trying to get rid of evidence?" I just swallow the lump in my throat before glancing her way and replying, "I hope not but it's looking like that way for now.. So let's investigate more and we will decide from there.. did you want to go talk to the cops or head over to the bar that you were last seen by Stevie at?" I ask her as she shrugs thinking for a moment to herself.
She humms as she states, "Let's go to the bar because if there was evidence that my Ex had something to do with, but nothing was said, then maybe he was able to pay the officers off as well, to keep their mouthes shut.. So let's do our own investigation and if we have to talk to the police we can later.. but right now we don't know who we can trust."
"Yes beautiful, anything you say.." I state as she takes my hand into hers. "Ok Stevie please direct us to the bar by your work." I ask her as she quickly replies, "Of course."
Time to get our own investigation really underway.. Hopefully we will get the answers we need and she deserves after all this.
