Awakening
The sky started to weep, and the waves started to scream. The sunlight did not fade, but was engulfed, swallowed whole, and banished from the afternoon sky. The ship turned into a breathtaking mahogany from the caramel-colored pine. The wind fought against the masts, finding itself victorious against the mizzen mast, with it crashing into the sea.” We have been caught in the fight between the Anemoi and Neptune!” “Give Neptune a new bride! He wants the women!” The men demanded. All the women were lined up, blindfolded, and bound. The men started singing the Neptune wedding song. The three women started to cry and beg. They did not want to be on the ship, nor be the bed warmers for men who would not take a proper bath for months. Dragged here by men who slaughtered their families, burned down their towns, took their dignity, and now /the rest of their lives suffering a painful death. One of the women, whose name is Alena, went quiet and started to sing the song of the siren’s tears, the song of vengeance. The song of the pain that demands justice, the song that curses neptune and damn him to Hades to be lost in the river Styx. For their family and loved ones to suffer.r The grey sky grew black, the wind and the sea quaking in their boots. The other two women started to sing along. Out of panic, the men dragged the women by their hair and threw them in the water. The women saw the ship shrink as the current took them away. They could no longer feel their toes or hands. Darkness was clouding their eyesight, but in the last moment, the presence of many was sensed around them, the aura of pity and care. Then the world went dark. Then, nothing, the sea looked flat as if it were land ready to be walked on. The wind went and hid behind the sails, keeping still, as if there was a predator nearby. The murmurs started, so quiet no one knew what was being said. The captain came out of the haul awaken from a nap, and in a hurry asked what they put the women, searching for them violently. The men cheered while celebrating. The captain kissed the back of the closest sailor with his sword. He screamed, were are they? The juvenile cabin boy whispered with his head held down. The captain went on to one knee to meet the boy’s height. The boy repeated himself. Every word shook the captain. All the while, the murmurs were getting louder and louder. It was still faint, but the captain knew it was the siren's song. All of a sudden, the song became deafeningly loud. He instructed the crew to sail away fast. The ship was being held down by the water, the Almoni dared not deny the demands of the sea, creating a circular wind that kept the ship in place. The song grew louder, so loud the singing vibrated the last two masts on the ship, the sails fell to the deck. The commotion drew the attention of the captain’s most trusted men to join the ruckus on the deck. Anger and frustration covered their faces at the scene of being surrounded by the most vicious sign that retribution is coming. For at least 40 knots in all directions, sirens have surrounded the boat. Here to witness the birth and awakening. The singing stopped. Alena shot out of the water, instead of legs, a tail decorated with gem-like scales, eyes that glowed. Singing the sirens' song, the other two just swam to the top, joining the song, resparking the choir in celebration of the awakening.” I am Joseph Barthalomule, heir to the Barthalomule duchy. I am captain of the crystal blue fleet. With my name, I swear to make amends!” the captain pleads. Captain Joseph nods to his first mate and his most trusted men. The men who were first cheering are now being flung over the ship, causing a feeding frenzy the moment they hit the water. Alena descended back to the water, waiting for the person at the center of her anger. The crystal blue water turned ruby red. In the end, all that was left was the captain and 10 crew members to man a ship. When the sky cleared and the waves became calm, nothing was at the surface of the water except for the ship and Alena, Her blood boils, “ That was not enough!” she exclaimed, festering in her own emotions. The only family she had ever known was slaughtered. The town that took care of her and her brothers burned to the ground. Alena decided to swim away, reminiscing about her life before they came to her town.
