I left the house that day and went into town, there's a General Motors with a few cars available and that's when I met Fyler. I couldn't decide what was good and to be honest, I wasn't sure I'd be driving. I walked out the door for some air and he arrived wearing a casual blue shirt, jeans and sneakers. He looked at me and asked "Are you alright?" I turned to see his brown eyes, curious look he had towards me and the fact he had the door open and waiting. "I'm not sure if I'm going back in."
He stood next to me for a bit and looked into the distance with me "What are you doing?" "I don't mean to be strange but you look like you could use a friend, my name's Fyler by the way. I'd like to be your friend in case you pass out and I can use you as the perfect excuse to get a discount off of a car." I had a serious chuckle from that "Sure, I'll broker you a good deal." "I know, that was a terrible line." "Yes, excruciating but it worked. Thank you." "Shall we go car shopping, consider it a favour to me or payback from preventing you from falling."
We spoke for the entire day, we managed to get the same car but mine is red and his is blue. We went on a date that same day, he thought I needed some food. We went to the Italian restaurant called Rosso and he spoke to the host in the front "Ho una prenotazione sotto Crow." It wasn't long before the white gloves ushered us in and responded "Gradite un bicchiere di vino prima della presentazione del menù?" He looked at the man and responded "Forse un po' d'acqua per la signora, per favore." I am guessing he mentioned something about a menu and water because those were the two things that came to the table almost immediately.
There's a distinct look people give you when they don't believe you and she had that plastered all over her face when she said "For someone who doesn't know Italian you're quite eloquent." I smiled "I badgered Fyler to teach me whilst we were there waiting. I kept repeating the sentences over and over, it's very difficult on the tongue but with a good teacher, it's easy." "Did he ever explain what he said?" "I didn't ask, it was more fun to just have fun if that makes sense."
We connected immediately, I couldn't stop laughing, we went grocery shopping, sometimes he'd pick me up from campus or I'd get him from the gym. He stayed over a couple of times but always slept downstairs watching some game or two. It felt cosy and comfy and right. It was never forced or awkward, it was amazing. We had gone to Rosso a few times a week, two maybe three? I never paid, he always took the bill faster than I could reach for it.
My smile was interrupted when Officer Harris called Nia out, she was gone for a while. When she came back, she brought a tray and more paperwork. "These are your things, please make sure it's everything. Bail was posted for you by someone named Dimitri." I stopped immediately. "I don't know anyone named Dimitri." She seemed confused. "Are you sure?" "I think I would have told you about someone named Dimitri, I don't know anyone by the name Dimitri." I still signed for my things but I was apprehensive about leaving with a stranger, she walked me out to the front and then it all made sense "Ah, you must be Pippa. I'm Dimitri, your aunt Alexandra sent me." "Is it okay if I confirm with her first?"
No sooner did I finish the sentence and she walked in. "Well darling, having a run in with the law now are we?" I shook my head "Can I just go home?" "We can take you home but I want full disclosure on the ride home." She held her bag so tight but managed to laugh as she said the words "My niece, a jailbird… That's a song I never thought she would sing." Officer Mason mentioned just before I left "Make sure you don't leave town anytime soon, I might be there tomorrow."
I got out of the Police Station and went home. As soon as I could, I went to my room, washed everything off of me but came back downstairs and got everything ready for Officer Mason. I placed it in the bottom drawer of the kitchen and locked it. I wasn't much of a conversationalist so as I was done, I went back upstairs straight into bed.
Dana Dawson
51 Sherry Lane
September 18th, Monday.
10am
Dana has a red coloured door with a brass lion door knocker attached top centre. Just above it, a small peephole. There is a bell on the left side when facing it but it makes more of a dim buzz and she takes almost forever to answer especially if she is "busy". Officer Mason had gone over to see Dana, she came out yelling and dishevelled. "What do you want? Gosh it is so early!" "I'm Officer Mason." "What do you want!?" "I'm here to ask you about Miss Watts." "I don't care about Miss Watts and I am not going to talk to you without a lawyer present."
As she tried slamming the door in her face. "You're the one who filed a complaint against Miss Watts, we can do this here or at the station." "Like I said, no contact without a lawyer." She was about to slam the door and suddenly there was a thud on the side of the house. "Get off of my property!" She saw a half naked young gentleman on the floor holding bed sheets. "Ma'am kindly step away." "You're trespassing." "Ma'am this doesn't fall in the line of your property, in fact it falls in the line of your neighbours which means your little friend here is trespassing. Come with me Sir."
Just as an annoyance she took the young man in the car and started questioning him "Who are you?" He wouldn't speak. "Fine, I can take you straight to prison just like this." He winces at the thought "My name is Michal." "Michal… You work at Rosso?" "How do you know?" "That's a bit of a silly question, why were you running off?" "I thought you were someone else." "Who?" "Some guy Dana is with." "His name." "How should I know? I found out a few weeks ago she was on a date with him and I had to take their order. He was some pompous rich guy. He came there a few times a week." "How do you know he was rich?" "He always paid for meals, table 7." "That's supposed to mean something to me?" "I'd have to get to work to give you those answers."
She drove them to Rosso, it was closed during the day but she had her in on the basis that one of their employees was trespassing and could go to jail. She pointed at Michael sitting in the back wearing just a bedsheet. "I'm Officer Mason, may I come in?" Ennio Rosso was the owner of the restaurant, he allowed Nia in and offered her some wine. "If you would be so kind to release my nephew. Michal, he can be a little emotional at times. Gets led by his pants and not his mind." "This is unethical but you offered, may I know who reserves table 7?" He left the counter and brought the red leather book, bound beautifully with the name Rosso on it.
When Michal walked out, this time fully dressed in his more casual clothing. Ennio poured himself a glass of red wine and Michal showed Nia the reservation "It's under Crow." "Like I said, he came over here like clockwork, always before and paid for their table." She looked at the book "Do you know his name?" "No and he always paid for everything in cash." "Any security footage of the man." Ennio interjected "Michal this is a costly favour." "Uncle please, I don't want a record. My mother would kill me." Such desperation in his voice but Nia had no intention of sending him to jail, she was simply twisting his arm. Ennio shook his head and went into the back, he took a bit of time but handed a DVD over to Nia. "I truly appreciate it, I'll have this return as soon as possible." "There's no need, consider it a favour for not jailing my nephew." She got up and nodded. "I had no intention of doing so."
