The next day as I was being discharged there was a little boy with the most interesting eyes, the nurse came by holding his hand, "Come along Christopher." He had these yellow almost golden eyes, I couldn't help but ask the receptionist, "The little boy, Christopher. His eyes…" She smiled and told me everything about him, "He is so wonderful, a sweet little boy. His eyes have that ring around, it is called Kayser-Fleischer ring, we couldn't really see it before because of his eye colour being as amber as they are but it's more visible now." He was just one of many people who I found were looking at me awfully strangely even though I loved his eyes. I was heartbroken to find out he had been there for his treatment.
I was about to leave when I saw Doctor Everette again and this time with his keychain, "Oh, Doctor Fluffy is back." He chuckled a bit, "Yes, I am. Something about funfairs just brings out the big kid in everyone." The nurses were happy to see him smiling and answering to the name. I went outside for a moment, the sun peaked and almost kissed my cheeks but I stood back and stuck my hand out to make a few shadows on the floor when I saw a smaller shadow doing the same, it was Christopher. "Shouldn't you be inside?" He didn't say anything, just stood beside me and made the little shadows. The nurse eventually came out running saying, "Christopher, don't run off like that." I turned and he waved goodbye, as did I. Fyler startled me, "One day and already, a little man is trying to take you." "He is adorable, you don't stand a chance." We got into the car and went back home.
Even when we left, Christopher kept looking at me through the window. I waved goodbye as we rode off and I had a thought, "You know maybe I should become a nurse." "You can become anything you want, I'd fully support you." I looked into it and found out there was a nursing college not far from where we were staying and they'd be having an orientation day. I decided that I'd go, just to have a look but Fyler was headed out of town for a few days of work. I'd be there alone but I didn't feel alone. We kept in touch throughout and I went exploring. As soon as I got there, we had a fun task of wearing blue scrubs and free basic first aid training. Some of the nurses I met at the hospital were there as well as Doctor Everette, we were all pleasantly surprised to see one another.
"Did we make such a good impression on you that you're thinking of nursing?" "I just came to see it, you have Christopher to thank for any sort of registration if I end up doing it." I had absolutely no training in nursing but the day changed my mind completely, so much so that I enrolled immediately. The change of scenery helped, the new career path was truly a great distraction and I was truly enjoying myself. I forgot everything that happened back at Baidford until I saw an ambulance pulled up. I didn't give it much attention until the man in the suit came, asking the nurse to sign documents. I couldn't help but glance at the paperwork, "... Patrick Kaur…" his body was in a bag being transported back to his family, the research I had done said his parents died so who would be the family?
They didn't come through the front, they went to the next wing of the building. This didn't rattle me but I was more curious so I asked the nurse, "Why are they here?" "Oh they came for paperwork. We normally have a lot of it done here as the hospital is getting an extension. Some of the cadavers are for studies and the student Doctors whilst the others, prior funerals come here. Don't worry, it's far too early for you to see any of those. Those only come later." I stopped being curious about the situation and spoke with Doctor Everette about staying permanently, especially now with my career change. The change was needed, everything was new and I loved every bit of it all.
It wasn't like being in Baidford, here I felt like I could make a difference and a change. I even coloured my hair to celebrate, went blonde. Everything felt good and wholesome, it fit and just made sense. Going to nursing college was fun, we received quite a few welcoming gifts and a lot of study material and we had guidance counsellors on which nursing courses would best suit us. I had about several options in front of me but I chose children's nursing.
As I settled in Dans and got to know everything well, I went to the store and decided to buy my nursing uniform and again, I bumped into Doctor Everette. "I'm starting to think you're following me, Doctor Fluffy." "No, I need a new coat and a few other things." He was so meticulous about it even to the point where he helped me, it wasn't long before we were done and we went our separate ways.
I couldn't help but turn back a little, I'm glad he didn't notice it and I'm not sure why I did it. As Fyler had to extend his stay away due to work, I was sad about it and found myself studying with books all over the bed. Even at night, all you'd see are the notes and books. There was a knock at the door and as I was studying and it was a weekend, I wasn't exactly appropriate. My hair was in a messy bun, I had my glasses on, barefoot with just a shirt and shorts. I answered the door and it was Colin, "I'm sorry, I don't mean to drop by like this. My car is having trouble and the closest mechanic is stuck out in the storm." It's his house, I couldn't say no or let him stay out in the cold, "No it's perfectly fine, come in." He was completely drenched even though it was his place I still offered, "Maybe you should dry off." "No, I couldn't impose. You're doing enough already." "Don't be silly, you know where everything is and you'll be sick if you just stand there like a fish out of water." He eventually listened to reason and did get dried off, he switched on the fire and found some of his clothing which he packed away in storage. He looked normal and also sad at the same time, "Would you like something to eat?" "No, I'm fine. Thank you." His phone rang and the mechanic told him the torrential pour wouldn't allow him to be here until tomorrow which left him stuck.
I came out with some food, "I promise I'm not that bad of a cook." He eventually ate something but still seemed on edge but then again, I was too when I was back in Baidford. Being in the house where you were with your fiancée last, couldn't have been easy for him but I never brought it up. I didn't discuss anything about it either, which only left us with the topic of my studies. "How are you finding your studies?" "It's really amazing, I love it. I was doing literature before but it felt aimless. After meeting Christopher, everything just made sense." He smiled, "He has that effect on people." "I was meaning to ask, why doesn't he speak?" "He does speak but he decides with whom and when, in the meantime he just clings to whom he likes and is a quiet soul."
