Chapter one
Connie, help me put the pictures in the truck, we are almost running out of time, Amara called out to her junior sister.
She was going to have a great day today and she was trying her best to make the most out of it.
This art show at the central museum was going to be different from every other art show in the past. This was because many dignitaries were invited to this one. Quentin, the manager of the museum made sure of that.
Connie was already bringing down the art shows from their apartment and putting them into the trunk of their red pickup van.
Handle them carefully, Amara called out again, we can not afford to break any of these.
Amara was an artist. She specialized in drawing and painting pictures on wooden frames. She was very good at that. She discovered this talent long in her 5th grade and has not hesitated to nurture it.
Then she started with small drawings and paintings in her drawing book but now she had taken it to the next level.
She was now painting on different frames for sale and her paintings were world-class.
Amara was light-skinned with dark curly hair. Her face was smooth and she was cute. Very cute. She also had those curves that often attract men. And she was, to most people, the hot kind. Quentin, her manager at the museum had shown a lot of interest in her but she always turned him down. This was because she was as old as her father and she did not want to involve herself in a forbidden relationship.
Quentin was a divorcee. He was divorced by his former wife Frances for reasons best known to them. Since then, he had always felt empty. But Amara was certainly not the one to fill in that hole because she was much younger than him like a sort of thirty years gap or more.
Amara and Connie hopped into the van. Their dad was driving them. He had never missed any of Amara's art shows. He took it as a responsibility to always be there for his daughter. He believed his presence would give Amara an aura of confidence whenever she is presenting her works.
Connie was also there for her too.
Connie was shorter than Amara and also derived a lot of beauty from her. They were almost identical if not for the fact that Connie had straight her whereas Amara had curly hair just like their mother. It was said that Connie took her straight hair from her grandmother. Dad's mother. No wonder they were very fond of each other.
With these two great personalities beside she would have all the confidence she needs during the presentation.
They arrived at the museum twenty minutes earlier. Amara was glad of these. At least she could arrange her artwork properly before the event started.
Welcome Amara, she was greeted by her colleague Drema who had just come some minutes earlier and was done arranging her artwork.
Nice o see you Drema, Amara responded as they hugged.
Quentin has been looking for you, Drema told her.
Did he say why he was looking for me? Amara asked.
Nope, Drema replied, just the usual ' tell Amara I need to see her in the next five minutes.
Amara was a little surprised because although she knew that Quentin was always disturbing her she knew as well that they both didn't have any business at hand. Anyways she went to his office. He was looking kinda happy when he saw her.
Good morning, beauty, he greeted Amara.
She was not surprised, it was his normal style of greeting her.
I am doing great Sir, she responded to him.
I have been waiting for their arrival, he let her know, so what took your time?
Nothing much sir, I was just inspecting and adding finishing touches to my artwork. She said.
Oh yeah, that's good, you know today's art show is going to be something different. So many wealthy people will be coming around and they will all be looking for the best. And I must say your artwork so far is the best and I just want to tell you that I am so proud of you.
Thank you, Sir, Amara replied in the most polite way she could.
The show just started, and different dignitaries and millionaires were walking around looking at different artworks. But most people's attention was on Amara's painting especially her painting of the Mona Lisa.
This particular painting attracted much ye and attention and many people wanted to get it. So the bidding started. The highest bidder was the one to take the painting home.
I would take it for two thousand dollars, an elderly man in a white shirt and trousers announced.
That's way too low I am taking it for twenty thousand dollars, another wealthy-looking man bidder.
There was great tumult because of the level of the gap the second bidder gave the first bidder.
Many people were now gathering around, Amara was getting shy but her dad had his hand on her shoulder. That was everything she needed.
Now the wealthy men kept bragging and dragging, Quentin even came around it has been a long since he saw such attraction to an artwork.
Alright gentlemen, let's comport ourselves as respectable men we are and give this wonderful piece of art a fine bidding.
Now let's start with thirty thousand dollars, any one offering below that should please leave the arena, Quentin announced.
No one left.
Looks like they were all determined to get this art, Connie thought. One thing she knew for sure was that her family's financial status would never remain the same after this auction.
They kept bringing in their bids until it reached sixty thousand dollars. Now three people bidding on this. Many withdrew from the auction but just remained there to see the final winner of the auction.
I would offer fifty thousand dollars and ten cents, the first man said.
I would offer fifty thousand dollars and twenty cents, the second man said.
I would offer fifty thousand dollars and thirty cents, the third man said.
Now look gentlemen, we are not going anywhere with these, we need a real deal.
They were still haggling when they heard a deep but fine voice from behind them.
I would take the painting for one million dollars, the deep voice said.
There was a sudden hush. Everyone turned back to see this man with dropping jaws. They knew the auction was an offer. No one would be willing to march that bid. Slowly but steadily, they all dispersed. All cursing and murmuring.
