The Problem
Jace's POV:
I stared out the window on the top floor of the penthouse I was considering purchasing. "The view is not what I expected," I said facing the realitor. "This is the winter view when the snow falls. It blankets the city in white. It is the summer view you are more interested in. Unfortunately, right now, with the seasons being fall, I can not force the trees to bloom," Harry, the realitor stated, coming to stand beside me at the window. I looked down again, trying to see what everyone else sees in these penthouse views. I do not see the appeal. Everything looked gray and dull, there were naked trees in the park and a lot of buildings of different colors.
The streets looked crowded and busy. I would much rather be in my packhouse handling the day to day, but with my father retiring, I will soon be the CEO of Wolf Industries and the Alpha of the silver fang pack. So I needed a place in the city for business trips. I sighed a breath. "And the penthouse below this is available as well correct" I asked. "Yes, sir, we can go see that one next," Harry said, showing me the two sets of keys. "No need, I'll wire the money in an hour for both." I stated flatly, taking both sets of keys from his hand, then leaving Harry staring out the window. I took one last look around the fully furnished penthouse. Its decor was modern and pretty sleek, a lot of whites, blacks and maroons. Large sectional, flat-screen TV, a master bedroom upstairs, then 3 additional bedrooms, an office, a game room equipped with a pool table and a bar, a large state-of-the-art kitchen and an eat-on-breakfast nook, and a large dining room table.
It was comfortable enough to call it home away from home. I took the elevator down to the first floor and exited the building through the main entrance. My beta Toney stood at the car the back door open and waiting on me. "You sure about this one Jace?" he asked, leaning against the door. "As sure as I am going to be." Annoyance flared in my voice. "Besides, I won't be here often enough to care" I stated as I got into the back seat of the car. "Let's head to the pack house I have things to discuss with my father" Toney got in and started the SUV. The city buildings passed by in a blur of mixed colors I closed my eyes and leaned my head back on the seat.
For the next three hours, Toney and I sat in silence when the Silver fang territory finally came into view. Toney did not stop at the border. Instead, he slowed, waved at the guards and continued to drive until the pack house came into view. The car came to a stop at the front entrance. Toney got out before me and opened my door as I gathered my briefcase and laptop bag. "Thank you, Toney," I said as I exited the vehicle. Climbing the steps two at a time and entering the house, familiar scents hit my nose. "The counsel," I growled as I walked down the hard wood floor hallways, my slick black dress shoes making thudding sounds as I stomped down the hall towards my father's office. I tapped twice on the door before showing myself in.
As soon as I entered my father's office, there were 4 of the counsel members sitting at his conference table, my father at the head. "Ah, you have returned from your adventure," one of the counsel members, Aldridge, said with a smile. "Aldridge, Eldon, Aris, Eric, Dad" I said eyeing each as I stated their names. "What is going on?" I questioned setting my briefcase and laptop bag down on my fathers' desk. I walked to the conference table and sat down at the other end, waiting for a response. " We have come to speak with your father about your succession," Eldon stated, leaning back on his chair. "What about it?" I replied, my voice calm and low as I leaned back in my own chair.
“Well.." Alridge said, his voice sounding small. "There are rules to each succession," Aris said, her voice calm but demanding eyes dancing with amusement. Out of all the counsel elders, she is the only one I actually like. She can not be overruled, bullied or pushed around. I respect that. Though I was not sure what is amusing to her right now. "Very well, what are these rules?" I urged her to continue. "There are a few, Your Alpha training must be completed. You must be successfully running the pack with minimal help from counsel elders or your father by the time you come of age," she said, looking at me. " I have completed all the training and I have personally been seeing the day-to-day operations of the pack since I was 18 at 28 I have required no help or assistance from anyone in the last 10 years including my father" I said annoyed now that they were here discussing this like they didn't already know I had not needed any help since taking over.
"Yes, but there is one more requirement for you, my son," my father said, looking at me concern in his eyes. "And what is that?" I asked curiously. "You must also have a fated or chosen mate so the pack can have a Luna son," he said. My face drained of color and my anger bubbled in my chest. While yes I was old enough to find my fated mate, that is the last thing I want to deal with right now. I've been far to busy to even entertain the idea of a mate. I did not want to just pick a random she-wolf to claim either. It would not be fair to her or me if, one day, She found her fated mate, we would be bound by the chosen mate bond claiming one another would make. I have plenty of time to find the right woman, but right now my focus is on the company and pack.
"A Luna? Chosen for fated?" I asked. "Yes," he confirmed, looking at me, knowing my anger was rising. "Correct me if I am wrong here, but there are many alphas in this world that have taken their succession, then find or choose their Luna's later. Why is this up for question now?" I asked loudly, my anger visibly rising. "Everyone, leave my son and I to speak," my father's commanding tone left no room for arguments. The counsel members got up and left his office in a hurry, closing the door behind them. My father got up and walked to his desk, grabbed a manilla folder, then returned and sat next to me at the table.
“The alphas you are speaking about had no choice but to retire early. They could not wait until their children found their mate's or to choose a chosen mate to pass the pack's and responsibilities to them," He said, opening the folder and sliding it over to me to see. "Alpha Hunter of the red moon pack passed his to his son tray because hunter starting to lose his ability to see" he said pointing at the report "Issue: Vision issues - assessment - Vision impairment 75% Result-Total vision loss inevitable." I read out loud flipping to the next page reading it again another alpha another health issue war wound-paralysis inevitable. I flipped through the pages and read them: Hearing loss, loss of site, paralysis, loss of memories. All the alpha's that have passed the titles before their children could find their fated mate or choose a mate.
I closed the folder. "I see," I said, clearing my throat. "All of these new alphas you are thinking about have either located their fated mate's with in a year of succession or have chosen a mate to ensure the pack has a Luna," he said, his eyes looking tired now. "And because you have no known health issues" he trailed off "you have to wait until I find either my fated mate or I'll have to choose a mate" I mumbled resigned to what he was saying.
