Chapter 5

The rest of the week goes exactly as planned. No interruptions in class. I plan my days and that way I keep my sanity and I don’t think too much. Joe doesn’t mention Griffin's name when we are together and for that, I am grateful. He has been in and out of the office the whole week and only nods when he spots me. I went out a few times with Dawn. We went to a few restaurants, and she took me to a friendly pub. It wasn’t crowded, and the food was amazing. I like Dawn. She is honest and doesn’t ask questions if I don’t feel like talking. She also puts Monica in her place and I guess that’s a big part of why Monica doesn’t like her. I also found out that Monica’s family is wealthy and that Griffin and her family are old friends. She’s been having a crush on Griffin since she started dancing. “You coming with us tonight, right?” Joe asks, but I don’t feel up for a party. “Cmon Mia, it’s the Schools year-end dance and we want you there.” James said, flickering his eyes and holding his hands in pleading. “Ok,” I said. Joe and James jumped up and down out of excitement. “But only for a while. I have to look for a new apartment tomorrow,” The school year is almost finished and Mrs. Jackson called me twice to remind me that new students need to fill up the dorms. I changed into a black dress and curled my hair. Joe did my makeup, but this time a little darker. According to her, I have to compliment the dress and cannot look like a ghost, so I gave in. “Wow, you look stunning,” James said. If I didn’t know he was gay, I would’ve thought he’s flirting with me. I laughed and thanked him. The school Hall is packed with people. I tried making my way to the dance, passing a crowd laughing and joking around, Finally were inside and it looks beautiful. Blue balloons are hanging out of the ceiling and silver drapes hanging from one side to the other side. The lights are dim and there is soft music playing in the background. Everyone is cheerful with a few couples that are dancing slow. Joe and James left me as usual and ran for the booze. I giggled, and they waved at me. “you look nice” I turned around to see Josh. He smiled, and what an adorable smile he has. “Thank you,” I said and returned with a smile. He has a navy blue suit on with a white shirt and black tie. His shoes matching his tie. “Can I get you a drink?” My eyes are focused on the door where Griffin and Monica are entering. His eyes hooked on mine and I can see on his face that he wasn’t expecting me to be here since I no longer having classes at the school. I quickly recovered and looked away. “You ok?” Josh asked me. “Yes, and yes, I would love to have a drink,” he smiled, and we made our way to the cocktail bar. I avoid making eye contact with Griffin but failed miserably when Monica laughed out loud, for reasons I don’t even want to know. Griffin’s arms are hooked around Monica’s waist and I instantly regret looking at them. The jealousy I feel is heating my face, and I can kick myself for coming tonight. “Do you want to dance?” I asked Josh and regrets it the moment the words leave my mouth. “Yes, that would be nice.” He took my hand, and we walked to the dance floor. I can feel Griffin’s eyes on me, but this time I’m not looking. Josh and I were having 2 slow dances before they announce that dinner should be ready any minute. “Oh, look, Griffin is here.” He grabbed my hand, and before I could say anything, he called out to Griffin. I blushed and wanted to scream. I should’ve never come. Joe is also standing next to Griffin, and her face changed the moment she saw me walking up to them. “You Ok?” she whispered and I nod. “Mia,” Griffin agreed, with a glass of whiskey close to his lips. “You look lovely “ “Thank you,” I manage to say. He’s staring at me with blazing eyes. I blinked a few times to gain my sanity before I fall for his charming beautiful looks again. Monica notices the tension and hooked her arms around him. I cursed in my mind and just gave her a sarcastic smile. I leaned in a little closer to Josh and Griffin’s eyes go wide and he looked away. All of us standing around making small talk. “So Mia, have you found an apartment yet?” Josh asks. Griffin's eyes were still locked on me. No, I’m leaving early tonight. I have to wake up early tomorrow to go look at a few places. Griffin keeps pouring down his throat, one drink after another. He called the waitress again, ordering another whiskey, I presume. He took the drink from the waitress and pour it down his throat again. This is too painful to watch. “excuse me,” I said and walked out onto the balcony. The wind is freezing. I should’ve put on a jacket, but the fresh air is clearing my mind and I feel like I can breathe again. I inhale and exhale a few times before I heard a noise. I turned around to see Griffin tripping over the side table by the long sleeper couch that is standing on the balcony. “f**k” He cursed, and it’s the first time I ever heard him cursed. “You ok?” I ask, but he ignores me and down another drink. “don’t you think that you’ve had enough?” “What are you, my mother?” He muffles back, and I want to punch him for being so disrespectful. “fine I will leave you to it.” and just as I was about to go in, he grabbed my arm and pulled me back. “What are you doing?” He asked. His eyes are swollen from all the booze and he can barely stand up straight. “let go of me Griffin,” I asked, but he tightens his grip. “Not till you tell me what you are doing?” I flinch and he lets go of me. “I don’t know what you are talking about” he started laughing and I want to yell at him. “Are you trying to make me jealous, Mia?” “What?” I said, knowing very well that I tried to make him jealous. “you need to go home and sober up.” “you don’t get to tell me what to do, remember I am the boss, not the other way around” “Clearly,” I said underneath my breath. “What?” He said, his eyes focus on my dress. “Nothing. I don’t have the energy to fight with you.” “So why are you?” He asked, this time with a soft voice. This man will be the death of me. I cannot keep up with his moods. “Stay with me,” he asked and every bone in my body wants to turn around and run for the heels, but I nod and we sat down on the sleeper coach. “Why haven’t you told me you are looking for an apartment?” He’s picking at his nails. “I didn’t know that I had to.” He looked up, with no comeback this time. “Don’t you think that dress is too tight?” Griffin lets out. “Are you insulting me? Or just being yourself?” He smiled, and I want to punch him in the face. “Why does it bother you what I’m wearing? besides Monica’s dress is way shorter than mine.” I tried to make a space between us as much as I can but he keeps sliding closer. “I don’t care how she dresses, I care about how you dress.” “Oh please,” I let out and half-laugh. “You made it pretty clear that you don’t care about me, besides if you don’t like the way I’m dressed, then don’t look at me,” I feel pissed and for once I don’t care what he thinks about me. “Don’t you get it, Mia, it’s because I care.” I can feel the air leaving my lungs again. Why does he have to be so complicated? One minute he is cheerful, the next he bites my head off, then all of a sudden he is charming. “Don’t,” I said to him and he leans closer. His face touching mine. “Why not?” He asks, his eyes soft. I can smell the booze on his lips. He takes his lip in between his teeth and touched my face. I close my eyes and try not to think much, my heart racing again and I try to just go with it, but then a sudden voice reminds me he is here with Monica, and just like that, I backed away from him. “What’s wrong?” he asks as I stand up. “Nothing I have to go” “Mia?” Griffin calls, but I ignore him and run inside. I passed Joe and James. I can see Joe being paranoid when Griffin is behind me. “Mia” Griffin calls again. I stopped and asked Joe for her keys, turning around to see Monica stopping Griffin from running after me, and I let her. I am done. He is playing with me, and for a second he almost got away with it. I stormed out and made my way to the dorm. I closed the door and lay down on my bed. My phone buzz on the dresser but I ignore it. Just as I close my eyes, it buzzes again. “Dammit” I let out. The caller Id says, Griffin. I pressed the decline button and lay down on my bed again. My phone buzzes again. This time it’s Dawn. “hey,” she said over the phone. “Hey” I let out. “Are you ok?” Her voice sounds worried. “Yes, I’m ok “ “Ok, you want to talk about it?” I kept quiet and let out a thick sigh. “please call me if you want to talk” I guess she got the message when I didn’t answer back. “I will,” and I smiled at the gesture before I hang up. Griffin seems serious tonight, but I know it’s just an act. He fools around and the moment he sobers up; he is a jerk again. How does he do that? How can he play with people’s feelings like that? I know the girls like it, but I am not any girl and I refuse to be trapped in his web. I undress and took a quick shower. I have no idea if Joe would return tonight and honestly, I would be glad if she just stayed over at James tonight. I am in no mood to explain what happened tonight. I dress in pajamas and lay down on my bed again. I tried watching a movie, but my thoughts were full of Griffin. I can’t seem to get him out of my head. Even in his drunken state, he managed to be sexy and charming. The movie is not making sense at all and I finally drift off to sleep. The next morning, Joe was fast asleep in her bed. I didn’t even hear her come in.. my laptop is closed on the side table. She put it on the desk while I was sleeping. I tried to be as quiet as I can. I dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans. The weather is cold so I have to put on a jacket. I’m finally ready to go check out a few places. Dawn has sent me a few places near the dance studio. If I like one of them, it would be easy for me to get to work without taking a bus or taxi. The day goes by fast and I only have one more place to view. The guy that is renting out the furnished one-bedroom apartment is nice. He stared at me awkwardly but he offered me half the price than what the initial price was on the internet, and it’s close to work. So I decided to take it. “Thank you,” I said when he handed me the keys to the apartment. He smiled and left the building. The building is old, and the apartment is not that big, but for the price it’s nice and after all, it’s just me that will live here. I removed all my clothes and a few boxes from the rental I got and started unpacking them. I have to go to the shops. I have nothing to eat. I don’t even have a mug to drink coffee. I ordered takeaways and decided to go to the shops tomorrow. Dawn called and wanted to stop by tomorrow to check out the place and promised not to talk about Griffin, so I guess it should be fine. I finished the pizza and went to bed. The bed is big, it’s a queen-size bed, and I feel lost in it after my small bed at the dorm, but it’s nice having my own place. I don’t have to worry about drunk people coming in and out of the room after a big party with Joe. I will miss her, but she promised to come and visit. My eyes feel heavy and I finally fell asleep.
