THE CEO WHO KNEW MY SECRET

Elena Carter thought she had finally escaped her past.

For seven years, she had lived with the consequences of one terrible night—the night her family's powerful empire collapsed, her father disappeared, her mother died, and everything Elena thought she knew about the people around her fell apart.

Once, the Carter family name had opened every door in the city.

Now, it was a name people whispered about.

A name associated with scandal.

A name associated with betrayal.

A name associated with a secret that Elena had spent years trying to bury.

After the Carter family's sudden downfall, Elena was forced to leave the city she had grown up in. She changed her surroundings, rebuilt her life, and promised herself that she would never return to the world that had destroyed her.

But promises made in pain are difficult to keep.

Seven years later, Elena returns to the city.

Not because she wants to.

Because she has finally found a clue.

A single piece of information hidden among her late mother's belongings leads her to one company.

Blackwood Corporation.

The most powerful business empire in the city.

The company controlled by the cold, mysterious, and notoriously ruthless Adrian Blackwood.

Elena has no reason to believe Adrian is connected to her family's downfall.

At least, that's what she tells herself.

She applies for a position at Blackwood Corporation under a slightly altered version of her resumé. She intends to work her way into the company, investigate its records, discover what happened to her family, and leave before anyone realizes who she really is.

It should have been simple.

It isn't.

Because the moment Elena walks into Adrian Blackwood's office, he looks at her as though he has been waiting for her.

He doesn't ask her name.

He doesn't ask about her qualifications.

He simply studies her for several seconds before saying:

"You shouldn't be here, Elena."

Her heart stops.

She has never met him before.

At least, not as far as she remembers.

Elena immediately realizes something is wrong.

Adrian knows her name.

He knows who she is.

And somehow, he knows something about her past that no stranger should know.

Something she has spent seven years hiding.

Something that could destroy everything she has rebuilt.

For the first time since returning to the city, Elena is afraid.

Not because Adrian is powerful.

Not because he is the CEO of one of the largest corporations in the country.

But because he knows her secret.

And he knows it without her telling him.

CHAPTER ONE: THE MAN WHO KNEW HER NAME

Elena had imagined her return to the city countless times.

In some versions, she arrived with confidence.

In others, she arrived angry.

Sometimes she imagined walking past the headquarters of the companies that had once belonged to her family and feeling nothing.

But she never imagined standing inside the lobby of Blackwood Corporation with her heart pounding because a receptionist had just told her that the CEO personally wanted to see her.

She had applied for an ordinary position.

She hadn't expected the CEO to notice her.

Yet here she was.

Standing outside Adrian Blackwood's office.

Elena took a slow breath.

She reminded herself why she had come.

She wasn't here to make friends.

She wasn't here to rebuild her family's reputation.

She wasn't here to revisit old memories.

She was here for answers.

Seven years ago, the Carter empire had collapsed almost overnight.

Her father had been accused of financial crimes.

Their business partners had abandoned them.

Their bank accounts had been frozen.

Their properties had been seized.

Her mother had died shortly afterward.

And Elena had become the target of public suspicion.

Everyone had a theory about what happened.

Nobody had the truth.

Or at least, nobody had been willing to tell her.

Then her father disappeared.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

No body.

Nothing.

For seven years, Elena had lived with questions.

Until three weeks ago.

That's when she found her mother's old box.

Inside it was a photograph.

A photograph of her father standing beside several businessmen.

One of them was Adrian Blackwood's father.

Another was a man Elena had believed was one of her family's closest friends.

And on the back of the photograph were six handwritten words:

"The truth is inside Blackwood."

That sentence had brought Elena back.

She had spent three weeks preparing.

She created a new résumé.

She researched Blackwood Corporation.

She learned about its departments.

She studied its management structure.

And she applied for a position that would give her access to the company's internal records.

She had thought she was prepared.

Until Adrian Blackwood looked at her and said her name.

Now she wasn't so sure.

The office door opened.

"Mr. Blackwood is ready for you."

Elena entered.

Adrian stood beside a large window overlooking the city.

He was dressed simply, but carried himself with some kind of confidence that made the very expensive office seem like it belonged to him personally.

THE CEO WHO KNEW MY SECRET
Episode 1: The Man Who Knew Her Name Elena Carter had imagined returning to Blackwood City a thousand times. Sometimes she imagined herself arriving in a luxury car, dressed in expensive clothes, with everyone who had once looked down on her forced to recognize who she had become. Other times, she imagined walking through the city unnoticed. But never had she imagined returning like this. Seven years after her family's downfall, Elena stood inside the enormous lobby of Blackwood Corporation, pretending that her hands weren't shaking. The building was exactly as she remembered it from photographs. Glass walls. Marble floors. People in expensive suits moving quickly from one office to another. Blackwood Corporation wasn't simply a company. It was an empire. And Elena had deliberately walked into the middle of it. "Miss Carter?" Elena looked up. A receptionist was standing behind the desk. "Yes?" "Mr. Blackwood is expecting you." Elena's heart skipped. "Mr. Blackwood?" The receptionist nodded. "Yes. The CEO." Elena forced a smile. "I applied for an ordinary position. I wasn't told the CEO would interview me." "He doesn't normally interview applicants." The receptionist paused. "But he specifically requested you." Elena's stomach tightened. She had been careful. She had changed her phone number, moved away from the city, and spent seven years building a life under the radar. She had even altered her résumé. Nobody at Blackwood Corporation should have known who she really was. Nobody. "Take the elevator to the thirty-second floor," the receptionist said. Elena nodded and walked toward the elevator. As the doors closed, she reached into her handbag. Her fingers touched a small envelope. Inside was the reason she had returned. Three weeks earlier, Elena had discovered it among her late mother's belongings. Inside had been an old photograph. Her father stood in the center. Beside him were several businessmen. One of them was Adrian Blackwood's father. On the back of the photograph, her mother had written six words. THE TRUTH IS INSIDE BLACKWOOD. Those words had changed everything. Seven years ago, the Carter family had been one of the most powerful families in the city. Then, almost overnight, everything collapsed. Her father was accused of financial crimes. Their accounts were frozen. Their properties were seized. Business partners abandoned them. Her mother died. And her father disappeared. Nobody ever explained what happened. Elena had spent seven years searching for answers. Now she had finally found a clue. The elevator doors opened. A woman in a black suit approached her. "Miss Carter?" Elena nodded. "I'm Sophia, Mr. Blackwood's executive assistant." Sophia pointed toward a large black door. "He's waiting for you." Elena took a deep breath. She knocked. "Come in." The voice was deep and controlled. Elena entered. A man stood beside the enormous windows overlooking the city. Adrian Blackwood. CEO. Billionaire. And, according to everything Elena had heard, one of the coldest men in the city. He turned toward her. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then his eyes narrowed. Elena felt something strange. Recognition. It was impossible. She had never met him. Had she? "Close the door," Adrian said. Elena did. He walked toward his desk. "You lied on your application." Her heart jumped. "I don't understand." "You said you had no previous connection to the Carter family." Elena forced herself to remain calm. "I don't." Adrian stared at her. Then he said two words that made her blood run cold. "Elena Carter." She stopped breathing. Her fingers tightened around the folder in her hand. "Who told you that name?" Adrian didn't answer. Instead, he opened a drawer. He pulled out a photograph. And placed it on the desk. Elena's eyes widened. It was the photograph from her mother's envelope. The same photograph. The same people. The same secret. She slowly looked at Adrian. "Where did you get that?" His expression remained unreadable. "That's my question." Elena couldn't move. Adrian leaned against his desk. "You came here looking for answers." "I came here for a job." "No." His voice was calm. "You came here because of the photograph." Elena's heart pounded. "How do you know?" Adrian looked directly into her eyes. "Because I've been looking for that photograph for seven years." Elena's face went pale. Seven years. The exact amount of time she had spent running. The exact amount of time Adrian had apparently been searching. "What do you know about my family?" she whispered. Adrian's expression darkened. "Your father wasn't guilty." Elena's eyes filled with disbelief. For seven years, everyone had told her the opposite. "Then who destroyed my family?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. He walked toward the window. Then he said quietly: "That's what I'm trying to find out." Elena stared at him. "Why should I trust you?" "You shouldn't." His answer surprised her. Adrian turned around. "That's why I'm giving you the job." She frowned. "What?" "You want answers." He gestured toward the city below. "So do I." Elena stared at him. Then Adrian said the words that would change her life forever. "Welcome to Blackwood Corporation, Elena." She didn't know it yet, but accepting that job would bring her face-to-face with the people who had destroyed her family. And one of those people already knew she was alive. Someone had been waiting for her return. Episode 2: The Job She Never Expected Elena barely slept that night. Adrian Blackwood's words kept replaying in her mind. Your father wasn't guilty. For seven years, she had wondered whether she had been wrong to believe her father was innocent. Now, a stranger had confirmed what she had always suspected. But Adrian wasn't just a stranger. He was the son of the man standing beside her father in that mysterious photograph. And somehow, he had been searching for the same photograph for seven years. The next morning, Elena arrived at Blackwood Corporation earlier than everyone else. She wanted answers. More importantly, she wanted access. If the truth really was inside Blackwood Corporation, she needed to find it before Adrian realized exactly what she was looking for. A woman approached her as she stepped out of the elevator. "You're Elena, right?" Elena turned. The woman smiled. "I'm Sophia. Mr. Blackwood's executive assistant." "Yes. We met yesterday." Sophia handed her a folder. "These are your assignments." Elena opened it. Her eyebrows immediately rose. "This isn't an assistant's workload." Sophia laughed quietly. "I know." "Then why am I doing it?" Sophia glanced toward Adrian's office. "Because Mr. Blackwood personally chose you." Elena's expression hardened. "Did he say why?" "No." Sophia hesitated. "But I've worked here for four years." "And?" "I've never seen him personally choose an employee before." Elena looked toward Adrian's closed office. That didn't make her feel better. Sophia walked away. Elena entered her office and began working. For the next two hours, she reviewed contracts, financial reports, and company records. Everything appeared normal. Too normal. Then she found something. A subsidiary listed near the bottom of one document made her freeze. Carter Development Holdings. Her father's company. Elena stared at the screen. Why did Blackwood Corporation still have access to Carter Development? She clicked the file. ACCESS DENIED. She tried again. ACCESS DENIED. Someone had restricted it. Elena leaned back. Then she noticed something else. A small symbol appeared beside the file. A black crown. The same symbol from the document she had kept hidden for seven years. Her heart began pounding. She quickly opened her handbag and checked the original document. The symbol was identical. This wasn't a coincidence. She reached for her phone. Before she could search further, the screen lit up. Unknown Number A message appeared. Stop looking. Elena froze. Another message arrived. You should never have returned to Blackwood City. Her breathing became shallow. Then another message. Your mother couldn't protect you. Neither can he. Elena stared at the screen. Neither can he. Who were they talking about? Adrian? She immediately stood. The door opened. Adrian walked in. His eyes went straight to her face. "What's wrong?" "Nothing." "You've been staring at your phone for thirty seconds." Elena locked the screen. "I'm fine." Adrian stepped closer. "Show me." "No." His expression hardened. "Elena." She held his gaze. "I'm capable of handling a message." "What message?" "Why do you care?" Adrian's jaw tightened. "Because if it's what I think it is, you're already in danger." Elena hesitated. Then she handed him the phone. He read the messages. His expression changed instantly. "How long ago did you receive this?" "About two minutes ago." Adrian looked toward the door. "Sophia." She appeared almost immediately. "Yes, sir?" "Lock down this floor." Sophia's eyes widened. "Sir?" "Nobody enters or leaves without my permission." She nodded and hurried away. Elena stared at Adrian. "You think the person who sent this is inside the building?" Adrian looked at her. "I don't think." He paused. "I know." Elena's heart dropped. "How?" Adrian's eyes moved toward the black crown symbol on her computer screen. He had seen it. "You found the file." Elena said nothing. Adrian walked closer. "How much did you see?" "Enough to know someone has been hiding something." His expression darkened. "Then you need to leave." "No." "Elena—" "I didn't come back after seven years just to run again." She stepped closer. "I want the truth." Adrian stared at her. For a moment, something softened in his expression. Then he said quietly: "Then you're going to have to trust me." Elena shook her head. "I don't trust you." "I know." He looked toward the locked door. "But you're going to have to decide whether you trust me enough to survive this." Before Elena could answer, the lights suddenly went out. The entire floor went dark. A loud crash came from the hallway. Then Sophia screamed. Elena froze. Adrian immediately moved in front of her. "Stay behind me." "What happened?" He didn't answer. Another sound came from outside. A door slammed. Then silence. Adrian reached for his phone. The emergency lights flickered on. Sophia was standing at the end of the hallway, pale and terrified. "Mr. Blackwood..." Adrian walked toward her. "What happened?" She pointed toward Elena's office. "The file." Adrian's expression changed. "What about it?" Sophia swallowed. "It's gone." Elena rushed into her office. Her computer was still on. The hidden file had disappeared. But sitting on her desk was something that hadn't been there before. A single black envelope. Elena slowly picked it up. There was only one sentence written across the front: WELCOME BACK, ELENA. Her hands began to tremble. Someone had been inside her office. And whoever it was... knew exactly who she was.
