Chapter 1
I regularly tip a pair of popular werewolf couple influencers online, and I'm a huge, devoted fan of theirs.
The owners of the account never show their faces, but they post snippets of their daily life together every single day. They have been in love for eight years—childhood sweethearts who shift into wolf form together, watch private midnight movie screenings together, cook together...
They even bicker over who loves the other more.
I was deeply moved by their story, and I've been hoping they'll finally get their happy ending and officially mate soon.
That is, until the day of my eighth wedding anniversary with my husband Charles Campbell, when the couple's account updated with a new post:
We love each other with all our hearts, but I can never be his mate.
The blue wristwatch in the corner of the photo was painfully familiar to me—it was the anniversary gift I'd bought for Charles just last week.

Last week…
My sister, Susie Williams, accompanied me to pick out an anniversary gift for my husband. She kept praising my good taste. But in the end, she settled on a blue-dial mechanical watch for me—a style I'd never even considered, since I'd always steered clear of blue for him.
She was grinning so brightly, as if she was the one about to celebrate an anniversary. "Alpha Charles is definitely going to love this style."
I smiled. "You only picked this because you like blue, right? You don't know him; he hates blue."
I knew Charles's preferences perfectly well.
When I was picking out ties for him to wear to banquets once, he said I could pick whatever I wanted as long as it wasn't blue—he hated the color, full stop. I even teased him for being such a weirdo about it.
After that, I always deliberately avoided the color when buying things for him.
Susie pouted in dissatisfaction, still insisting, "I don't believe it. Let him choose." She lined up the watches together, took a photo, and sent it to Charles.
I laughed at how childish she was. "Come on, he's busy right now..."
The moment the message was sent, he replied instantly.
Charles: The blue one.
Susie laughed. "See? I told you, the blue one!" She held up her phone to show me triumphantly, and my smile froze.
I glanced down at my own phone. Just a second earlier, Charles had told me he was in a meeting. Yet he'd replied to Susie's message in an instant. And wasn't blue his least favorite color? He wouldn't even wear a blue tie. How could his preference have changed out of nowhere?
I couldn't help feeling a little put out.
"How come you know him better than I do?"
The smile on Susie's face faltered for a moment. "I don't. I just guessed right by chance, that's all." Her eyes darted away. She asked the sales associate to take a necklace out of the display case and held it up against my neck to see how it looked. "Sis, this really suits you. I'll get it for you, as an anniversary gift for you and Alpha."
My heart softened all of a sudden, and my doubts faded a little.
Susie was my biological sister. We'd been inseparable since we were kids, and whenever she had something good to eat, she always gave me half. She even carried me to the hospital back when I was attacked and injured by a rogue werewolf on the street. She stayed by my side the entire night, too. I was probably just being paranoid about what had happened that day.
After we finished shopping, we sat outside waiting for Charles to pick us up.
A little while later, Susie went to the restroom, leaving me alone.
I waited for half an hour.
Then Susie sent me a message.
Susie: Sis, you head back first. My boyfriend is here to pick me up.
Selena: Okay.
Susie had a boyfriend, and she said they were really happy together.
But I'd never met him.
I stood up to call Charles and ask when he would arrive.
As soon as the call connected, his apologetic voice came through. "Honey, there's a last-minute pack issue I have to deal with. I have to go back to the office right now."
My wrist went stiff, and I made a small hum of agreement, my throat feeling tight. I hailed a cab on the side of the road and went home.
That night, after I got out of the shower, I happened to see that the account that had gone quiet for a few days had just updated.
The blogger posted a photo of the two of them at a private movie screening. The caption said her boyfriend had driven to pick her up himself, but the theater was too cold, and he ended up catching a cold.
She stayed with him while he got an IV drip.
I glanced at the time on my watch. It was already 3 a.m.
Charles still hadn't come home.
