CHAPTER ONE: A New Beginning… Or Not
Chapter One: A New Beginning… Or Not The gates of Silver Crest High stood tall and intimidating, shining under the morning sun like they were guarding something far beyond Lina Okoye’s reach. She paused just outside, gripping the strap of her worn bag. This is it. A full scholarship. A chance her parents could never have afforded. A fresh start. Around her, sleek cars pulled up one after another—students stepping out in designer shoes, polished uniforms, and effortless confidence. Laughter filled the air like everyone already belonged. Everyone except her. Lina adjusted her simple uniform, suddenly very aware of how different she looked. Still, she took a deep breath andy stepped inside. You earned this, she reminded herself. You deserve to be here. The hallway buzzed with excitement. New students gathered in small groups, some already forming friendships, others showing off their phones, their bags, their lives. Lina walked quietly among them, observing. “Did you see the pool area?” a girl said excitedly. “My dad donated to the new science lab,” another added proudly. Lina swallowed. Different worlds. She moved toward the lockers, clutching her admission file like it was her shield. Maybe she could blend in. Maybe no one would notice. “Hey, you’re new too?” a soft voice asked. Lina turned, surprised. A girl stood beside her, smiling warmly. “Y-yes,” Lina replied. “Same here,” the girl said. “I’m just trying not to get lost on the first day.” Lina gave a small smile. “Me too.” For a moment, it felt… normal. Until the hallway shifted. The laughter lowered. The energy changed. Someone important had arrived. Lina didn’t need to turn to know—but she did anyway. Walking down the hallway like she owned every inch of it was Tiana Blake, surrounded by a group of perfectly dressed girls. Her confidence was loud, her presence louder. “She’s back,” someone whispered. “Queen Tiana,” another muttered. Lina quickly looked away, focusing on her locker. Not my business. That’s what she told herself. That’s what she believed— Until she turned. And walked straight into her. The impact was small. But the effect? Disaster. A cold splash spread across Tiana’s crisp white blouse. The juice bottle slipped from Lina’s hand and hit the floor. Silence. Complete silence. Lina’s heart dropped. “I—I’m so sorry!” she rushed out, her voice shaking. “I didn’t see you, I—” Tiana slowly looked down at her blouse… then back at Lina. The look in her eyes? Danger. “Oh,” she said quietly. Too quietly. “So this is how we’re starting the term?” “I swear it was an accident,” Lina pleaded. Tiana stepped closer, her gaze scanning Lina from head to toe—her simple bag, her worn shoes… her everything. “And who exactly are you?” she asked, her tone dripping with disdain. “Lina… I just got in on scholarship—” A few girls behind Tiana laughed. “Of course,” Tiana cut in. “That explains it.” Lina felt her chest tighten. “I said I’m sorry—” “And I heard you,” Tiana snapped. “But sorry doesn’t fix this.” The hallway began to buzz again—whispers, stares, quiet judgment. Lina wished she could disappear. Then— “Alright, that’s enough.” The voice was calm, steady… and commanding. Heads turned instantly. Standing a few steps away was Ethan Cole. Even Lina, on her first day, could tell who he was. The way people looked at him… the way the air seemed to shift. Tiana’s expression softened—just a little. “Ethan, she ruined my blouse.” “I can see that,” he replied, stepping closer. His eyes briefly met Lina’s—just for a second—but something about that glance made her feel… seen. Not judged. Seen. “It was an accident,” he added. “Let it go.” The hallway held its breath. Tiana’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “You’re defending her? On her first day?” “I’m being fair,” Ethan said simply. For a moment, tension stretched between them. Then Tiana let out a soft laugh—but there was no humor in it. “Fine,” she said, stepping back. “Welcome to Silver Crest, Lina.” Her voice was sweet. Too sweet. “But trust me,” she leaned in slightly, her smile fading into something colder, “you won’t last here.” Lina’s stomach dropped. Tiana turned and walked away, her group following closely behind. The noise slowly returned, but Lina still felt frozen in place. Ethan looked at her again. “You okay?” Lina nodded quickly, though her hands trembled. “First day’s always rough,” he said. “Just… watch where you’re going next time.” And then he walked off. Just like that. Lina stood there, her thoughts spinning, her chest tight. First day. First mistake. First enemy. She glanced down at the juice stain spreading across the floor… and then at the eyes still watching her. A fresh start? It didn’t feel like one anymore.
