Chapter Twenty Getting “broken in” was how Ella had described what would happen to them. As though Cassie and Gina were wild horses that required taming. The phrase didn’t quite capture the surreal nature of the experience. Taken to one of the smaller bunker-style buildings, they’d been roughly pushed into a room that looked like a cross between a clinic and a dungeon. There they’d been strapped down onto metal examination tables. But these weren’t regular, rectangular examination tables: Gina was restrained on one in the shape of an X, and Cassie on another in the shape of a K, with arms out either side of her and legs spread along the two “arms” of the K. And then—nothing. No one explained what was going to happen to them. The guards went off, presumably to other duties. They waited,
