Chapter 10: Sweet Little Old Lady We stood on the porch of his mother’s house for a moment. “little nervous.” I confessed as he kissed my hand. “Don’t be it’s going to be okay.” He opened the door then and we were greeted by three dogs wagging their tails. “hey boys.” Taren petted each one of them on the head. The dog thing makes sense now. “Honey is that you?” a voice sounded from the kitchen. “yeah ma.” He took my hand again pulling me along. “I brought someone here for you to meet.” She turned to us then and a huge smile lit up her face. “ Melinda right? I’m Daisy, Oh its so good to meet you!” I smiled giving a little wave. “it’s really nice to meet you too.” Wiping her hands on a towel she came towards me with a hug. I hugged her back and looked at Taren. “sorry were huggers here.” She said as I laughed “I like that actually.” She pulled away and hugged Taren kissing his cheek. “You didn’t tell me how pretty she was.” He smiled at her. This I can see is what healed his heart. This women took that hurt scared little boy and raised him into the strong amazing man I know now. Man I’m seriously the luckiest girl alive. I watched as the two of them laughed and chatted. Taren’s hand settled on the small of my back. “So Melinda How did you and my boy meet he refused to tell the details.” I looked at him and he shrugged. “um well I Technically met him in his English lit class but really we actually come from the same place.” I blushed. “you’re a student of his?” she looked at Taren disapprovingly. “yes ma’am but before you get to upset with him I’m a Nephilim too.” I turned showing her the parallel scars where my wings are. “well I supposed that is different.” I played nervously with my braid. “I supposed with that ring on your finger your going to be my new daughter too?” she eyed Taren now. “ I just asked her today.” He smiled at me. “wanted to tell you in person.” She smiled at him. “I’m so happy you’ve found someone to share life with sweetheart.” She hugged him again. “okay lets eat before this food I spent all day on gets cold.” We laughed and helped take the plates and meal outside to the porch. The meal was so good, I see where Taren gets it from for sure. I could see how much Taren loved his mother, the way they talked and laughed, they talked about how his job was going and how Benji was, which made me laugh. She also has horses but also a slew of live stock too. Cows and chickens, which is totally amazing. “you should come over during the day you could tour the farm. My son knows he needs to come over soon and help with some of these chores too. With Henry on the road right now I need all the help I can get.” Before I could ask Taren answered. “Henrys my moms husband.” “oh okay.” She laughed picking up her small dog. “I married Henry a few years after Taren showed up on my door step, before that it was just me and him. Id lost my first husband around that time and we were never blessed with any children of our own so Taren was my angel in disguise, literally.” I laughed. “definitely literally.” She loved learning new things about our kind and was not afraid to ask anything. A no filter kind of person and I loved it. “are your wings like Taren’s or are they black like others?” “hers are a beautiful white ma.” I smiled at Taren. “well can I see them?” “Ma!” Taren laughed. “No its okay babe I’m okay with showing her.” I stood and backed away from anything that would break and spread them open. “oh my you’re like a real angel from heaven they are so beautiful, I love Taren’s but yours well they really are heavenly.” I blushed bringing them back in and sitting back in my seat. “thank you.” Taren took my hand and kissed my fingers. “She’s perfect.” He said smiling. “you really do love her.” His mom watched us with pride in her eyes. “I really do.” He replied. I helped Daisy with the dishes while Taren tended to a few of the chores she was talking about him doing earlier. "Ill come over tomorrow and finish up.” Taren said kissing his moms cheek. “we’ve had a pretty long day today and I’m sure Mel’s ready for bed.” he continued. The exhaustion registered then, I really was extremely tired it had been a really hard day. Marlow’s spells are never easy to take but watching your mate go through the hardest moments of his life again was even worse. The scenes from his past replaying in my mind again. Taren must of felt my sudden sadness because he squeezed my hand. “Of course sweetheart, Melinda thank you for helping me clean up and I’m so happy to meet you. I’m so happy to hear ill be having you as a daughter now.” This made me smile “I’m so happy I got to meet you too.” She walked us to the door. “Ill see you BOTH next Sunday? And you’ll be here tomorrow for sure?” “wouldn’t miss it for the world ma. You’ll be seeing us both tomorrow, Love you.” “I love you too sweetheart.” Taren held the door to his truck open for me and then we were heading back down the road home. “Taren after my classes tomorrow I need to go to my apartment and one tell my landlord ill be moving out and two figure out what the heck I’m supposed to do with like eighty percent of the stuff I have I don’t want to crowd your house with my junk.” He laughed “Baby well figure it out I’ve got plenty of room for your stuff.” I sighed. “well I could have Marlow teleport it all.” Taren looked shocked. “he can do that?” “You haven’t met to many warlocks have you?” he shook his head no. “who put up all those barriers then? I noticed them at your moms too.” “my friend max he’s a warlock I guess is what you’d call him but he’s really different from Marlow. I met him when I first ended up here, but the ones at my moms have been there since I can remember. Maybe it was that women’s way of protecting me.” I thought awhile. “Maybe Max is also someone to protect you. Warlocks aren’t common here and most are assigned to us. Marlow is my guardian.” His eye brows came together. “I feel like that would have been something he’d have told me.” I shook my head. “Not if she wiped his memories of her. Warlocks are linked to their Nephilim and even not knowing the person who assigned that Nephilim to them they know their lives are dedicated to that person.” Taren frowned. “ so they have no choice? Their like magical slaves?” “no its not like that, they get a choice too. They cant become your guardian if they don’t want to.” He took that in. “so he’s my guardian?” i shook my head. “it seems that way. This was her way of making sure you were completely safe and hidden from Danaius.” His jaw clenched. “so that’s his name huh.” It wasn’t a question and I could see the anger well up in his eyes as they started to turn darker. “Hey I’m sorry, don’t be upset baby he’s nothing.” I squeezed his hand, his eyes turning back to their normal blue again. We turned into his driveway and he shut off the engine. I watched him closely. “today was hard. Remembering the whip really f****d me up.” I scooted over on the seat and wrapped my arms around him. “I know and I’m sorry you had to go through that again.” “seeing you there made it easier. It made me remember I wasn’t actually there again it was just the memories.” I kissed his forehead. “I’m glad I could be there with you.” I don’t know how long we sat there, but it was nice.
