Secrets in the Dark

The silence that followed Sofia's revelation felt almost unnatural. The fire continued to crackle in the hearth. The grandfather clock in the corner continued its steady ticking. Outside, somewhere beyond the thick walls of the estate, the wind rustled through the trees. Yet inside the sitting room, nobody seemed capable of moving. Amara sat frozen. Pregnant. The word echoed through her mind again and again. Isabella Moretti had been pregnant when she disappeared. Not only had she planned to run away with the man she loved, but she had been carrying his child. A child who should have existed. A child who would be an adult now. A child whose fate was completely unknown. Slowly, Amara turned toward Luca. His gaze remained fixed on the fire. His expression was unreadable. But she had begun to notice something about him. Whenever Isabella's name came up, something changed. The carefully controlled façade cracked. Not enough for most people to notice. Enough for her. "You knew." Her voice sounded hollow. Luca didn't answer. "You knew she was pregnant." Still silence. The absence of denial was answer enough. Anger surged through her. Days. She had spent days chasing answers while the people around her decided which pieces of the truth she deserved. "How long?" Luca finally looked at her. "Since the night she disappeared." The admission landed heavily in the room. Amara stood abruptly. The motion startled even herself. "You knew all this time?" His jaw tightened. "Yes." The honesty somehow made it worse. She could have understood a lie. Could have understood confusion. But certainty? Certainty meant choice. And Luca had chosen not to tell her. Again. "You don't get to decide what I know." The frustration she had been carrying for weeks finally broke free. "Every conversation is the same. Every answer leads to another secret. Every secret leads to another lie." Sofia remained silent. Antonio remained silent. Nobody interrupted. Because nobody could. Not this time. Amara looked directly at Luca. "Did my father know?" The question hung heavily in the air. Luca hesitated. Only briefly. But she noticed. And suddenly she wasn't sure she wanted the answer. "Yes." The single word hit harder than she expected. Of course he knew. Vincenzo Moretti had controlled entire criminal organizations. He would have known. The question was what he had done with that knowledge. "What happened after he found out?" Luca's expression darkened. The room seemed colder. "He was furious." Sofia laughed bitterly. "Furious?" Her voice dripped with contempt. "That's a polite way of describing it." Luca ignored her. Amara's stomach tightened. The image forming in her mind wasn't pleasant. She imagined Vincenzo discovering that his sister was pregnant with the child of a rival organization's member. She imagined the betrayal. The anger. The consequences. "What happened?" Amara asked quietly. Luca remained silent. It was Sofia who answered. "He gave her a choice." Amara looked at her. Sofia's expression had become distant. As though she were watching events unfold in her memory. "He told her to stay and raise the child within the family." A pause. "Or leave and never come back." The room fell silent. Amara frowned. That wasn't what she expected. For all the stories she'd heard about Vincenzo, she had anticipated something far worse. Apparently Sofia felt the same. "At least that's what he claimed." Luca's gaze snapped toward her. "Sofia." "No." The woman shook her head. "Not this time." The hostility between them intensified. Years of resentment suddenly visible beneath the surface. "You don't get to control the story anymore." For the first time since her arrival, Sofia looked genuinely angry. Not irritated. Not frustrated. Angry. "You've been controlling it for twenty years." The accusation settled heavily between them. Amara looked back and forth between the two. Neither seemed willing to explain. Which was becoming a very irritating pattern. "What aren't you saying?" Neither answered immediately. Then Sofia slowly stood. Her hands trembled slightly. Whether from fear, anger, or exhaustion, Amara couldn't tell. "When Isabella disappeared, everyone assumed she ran away." A pause. "Everyone except me." Amara's pulse quickened. "What did you think?" Sofia looked directly at Luca. Then she answered. "I thought she was taken." The room became deathly still. Taken. The word carried terrifying implications. Amara's heart began to race. "By who?" Sofia's gaze shifted toward the window. Toward the darkness beyond the glass. "At the time, nobody knew." Another pause. "Now I'm not so sure." The meaning behind her words was impossible to miss. Slowly, Amara turned toward Luca. The implication hung heavily in the room. Luca's face hardened instantly. "You think I had something to do with her disappearance?" Sofia didn't back down. "I think you know more than you've admitted." The tension became almost unbearable. Antonio stepped forward slightly. A subtle movement. Protective. Loyal. Amara noticed. So did Sofia. The older woman smiled sadly. "There it is." Antonio frowned. "There what is?" "Loyalty." Her gaze swept across the room. "The thing that destroys more lives than bullets." The statement lingered. Because deep down, everyone knew there was truth in it. Especially in their world. A world built on loyalty. A world sustained by loyalty. A world capable of demanding impossible sacrifices in its name. Sofia looked at Amara. "Your father inspired loyalty." A pause. "So does Luca." Her eyes darkened. "The difference is that people feared disappointing Luca." Amara immediately noticed the shift in the room. The discomfort. The tension. The guarded expressions. Sofia had touched something sensitive. Something dangerous. Before anyone could respond, the sitting room door suddenly burst open. A young guard rushed inside. His face was pale. Panicked. The sight alone made everyone's stomach drop. Luca immediately straightened. "What happened?" The guard struggled to catch his breath. "We found him." The room fell silent. Antonio frowned. "Found who?" The guard swallowed hard. Then he spoke a name nobody expected. "Marco Bellini." Amara's heart skipped a beat. Marco. The suspected traitor. The man whose name had been haunting the organization for weeks. Luca's expression sharpened instantly. "Where?" The guard looked shaken. "As one of the abandoned warehouses near the docks." A terrible feeling settled in Amara's stomach. The guard continued. His voice barely above a whisper. "He's dead." The room froze. Completely. Even Sofia looked stunned. Antonio swore under his breath. Luca didn't move. Didn't speak. Didn't react. And somehow that was worse. Because the stillness surrounding him felt dangerous. Very dangerous. Then the guard delivered the final blow. The detail that transformed shock into horror. "There was a message." Nobody breathed. Nobody spoke. The guard's hands trembled. "They carved it into the wall." Amara's pulse hammered in her ears. "What did it say?" The young man looked directly at Luca. His face had gone white. Then he repeated the words. "The next ghost will tell the truth." Silence swallowed the room. And for the first time, Amara wondered whether the people hunting them were trying to start a war... Or uncover a secret someone had killed to protect.
