The drive back to the estate was silent.
Not because there was nothing to say.
There was too much.
The note rested in Amara's lap like a live grenade.
She had read it so many times that the words were permanently etched into her mind.
Ask Luca where Isabella died.
Not disappeared.
Not went missing.
Died.
The distinction mattered.
It changed everything.
If the note was telling the truth, then someone knew exactly what had happened to Isabella Moretti. More importantly, that someone believed Luca knew too.
Amara turned the paper over for what felt like the hundredth time.
There was nothing on the back.
No signature.
No clue.
Only more questions.
Across from her, Luca sat with his arms folded across his chest, staring out the window.
The fading sunlight painted sharp shadows across his face.
He looked calm.
He always looked calm.
Yet now that she knew him a little better, she could spot the cracks.
The tension in his jaw.
The stiffness in his shoulders.
The distant look in his eyes.
He was thinking.
Calculating.
Preparing.
For the first time since she'd met him, Amara wondered if Luca was afraid.
Not for himself.
For what she was about to learn.
The convoy passed through the estate gates shortly after sunset.
Darkness had settled over the property.
Lights illuminated the mansion's stone exterior, making it look almost regal against the night sky.
Beautiful.
Cold.
Untouchable.
Amara climbed out of the vehicle before anyone could open the door for her.
She didn't wait for Luca.
Didn't wait for Antonio.
She headed straight toward the mansion.
The moment she entered, she turned around.
"Talk."
Several guards exchanged nervous glances.
Antonio wisely decided to disappear.
Luca removed his suit jacket and handed it to a nearby servant.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
His eyes met hers.
"The study."
Amara folded her arms.
Every instinct told her she wasn't going to like whatever came next.
The study occupied the western wing of the mansion.
Unlike the rest of the house, which was designed to impress visitors, this room felt personal.
Lived in.
The walls were lined with bookshelves.
Old maps hung inside polished frames.
A fireplace crackled quietly in the corner.
The scent of leather and cedar lingered in the air.
It was the first room she'd seen that actually felt like Luca belonged there.
He closed the door behind them.
The soft click echoed through the silence.
Amara remained standing.
Luca poured two glasses of whiskey.
She immediately shook her head.
"I don't drink."
"After tonight, you might start."
Despite herself, she almost smiled.
Almost.
Instead, she walked toward the desk.
"Tell me about Isabella."
Luca didn't answer immediately.
He carried his glass to the fireplace and stared into the flames.
For several moments, the only sound in the room came from the crackling fire.
Then he spoke.
"I met Isabella when I was seventeen."
Amara frowned.
"You knew her?"
A humorless laugh escaped him.
"Knew her?"
His gaze remained fixed on the fire.
"She practically raised me."
That wasn't the answer she expected.
Not even close.
Luca took a sip from his glass before continuing.
"Your father found me after my parents were killed."
Amara blinked.
The revelation caught her off guard.
In all the time she'd spent around him, she'd never considered asking about his family.
Perhaps because Luca never seemed like someone who belonged to a family.
He seemed like someone carved from stone.
Something ancient and unbreakable.
Human vulnerability didn't fit the image.
"What happened to them?"
"The wrong people wanted something from my father."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
But the darkness behind his eyes told her enough.
He didn't want to discuss it.
Not yet.
"After they died, Vincenzo took me in."
His expression softened slightly.
"At least, that's what he told everyone."
Amara leaned against the desk.
"What really happened?"
A faint smile appeared.
The first genuine smile she'd seen all day.
"You're getting better at this."
"I learned from the best."
The smile vanished.
"I wasn't adopted."
His voice grew quieter.
"Your father trained me."
The words settled heavily between them.
Trained.
Not raised.
Not cared for.
Trained.
Suddenly, a lot about Luca made sense.
The discipline.
The control.
The emotional walls.
Everything.
"He wanted an heir."
Amara's stomach tightened.
"And you became one."
"Eventually."
Silence stretched between them.
Then Luca looked into the fire again.
"Isabella hated it."
Amara's attention sharpened.
"What do you mean?"
"She hated the life."
His expression grew distant.
As though he were looking at memories instead of flames.
"She was different from the rest of the family."
A pause.
"Kind."
The word seemed strange coming from Luca.
Almost foreign.
Yet somehow she believed him.
"She volunteered at hospitals."
His voice softened.
"Spent her weekends helping people."
Another pause.
"She used to sneak food to homeless families and then lie about where the money went."
Amara smiled despite herself.
That sounded familiar.
That sounded like someone she might have loved.
Luca's gaze remained fixed on the fire.
"Your father used to pretend he was angry."
"Was he?"
"No."
For the first time that evening, warmth entered Luca's eyes.
"He adored her."
The answer surprised Amara.
Because the Vincenzo she had heard about didn't sound like a man capable of adoration.
Luca continued.
"Isabella was the only person who could walk into a room full of dangerous men and make them behave."
A small laugh escaped him.
"She treated everyone like family."
The smile disappeared.
The warmth vanished.
The room seemed colder.
Then Luca took a long drink.
And Amara knew the story was about to change.
"What happened?" she asked softly.
The silence that followed felt endless.
Finally, Luca answered.
"She fell in love."
Amara frowned.
"That's it?"
"No."
His voice darkened.
"She fell in love with the wrong man."
The words sent a chill through her.
Luca set his glass down.
"The man worked for a rival family."
Amara's stomach dropped.
Of course he did.
Nothing in this world was ever simple.
"He was supposed to be gathering information."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Instead, he fell in love with her too."
The room grew quiet.
Amara could already sense where this story was heading.
And she didn't like it.
Not one bit.
"Did my father know?"
"Eventually."
The answer came immediately.
"What did he do?"
Luca looked away.
His silence lasted only a few seconds.
But it was enough.
Enough for dread to settle deep inside her chest.
"What did he do, Luca?"
When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
"He ordered Isabella to leave him."
Amara closed her eyes.
Of course he did.
A mafia king protecting his empire.
A brother protecting his family.
The outcome had probably seemed obvious.
But love rarely listened to logic.
"She refused."
Luca nodded.
"She chose him."
The room felt impossibly still.
Even the fire seemed quieter.
Then Amara asked the question she had been dreading.
"What happened next?"
For the first time that evening, Luca looked directly at her.
His eyes held something she had never seen before.
Regret.
Raw.
Unfiltered.
Years old.
"The man disappeared."
A chill swept through her body.
No.
No, no, no.
She already knew what that meant.
"You mean he was killed."
Luca said nothing.
He didn't need to.
The truth was written all over his face.
Amara felt sick.
A brother had murdered the man his sister loved.
And somehow she knew the story still wasn't over.
Because Isabella was gone too.
Slowly, she straightened.
"What happened after that?"
Luca's expression hardened.
Not with anger.
With pain.
The kind that never truly healed.
"That's the part nobody knows."
The answer frustrated her instantly.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
His gaze locked onto hers.
"And that's exactly why we're in danger."
A knot formed in her stomach.
"What are you talking about?"
Luca walked to the desk.
Then he opened a drawer and removed a photograph.
He handed it to her.
Amara looked down.
Her breath caught.
The image showed Isabella.
Standing beside Luca.
Both of them smiling.
Both of them young.
On the back of the photograph, written in elegant handwriting, were five words.
Protect her when I'm gone.
Amara looked up.
Confusion flooded her face.
Luca's next words shattered the silence.
"The last person to see Isabella alive..."
He paused.
A shadow passing across his features.
Then he finished.
"...was me."
