Under Siege

The explosion shook the entire mansion. Glass shattered somewhere downstairs. Women screamed. Men shouted orders. Amara's heart slammed against her ribs as another loud blast echoed through the estate. The attack was real. This wasn't a story. This wasn't a nightmare. Someone was trying to kill them. Antonio grabbed her arm. "We need to move." Amara pulled away instinctively. "Move where?" "Somewhere safe." Before she could argue, gunfire erupted outside. The rapid sound of bullets filled the air. Her blood ran cold. "Oh my God." Luca strode toward the windows and pulled the curtains aside. His expression darkened. "They breached the outer gate." The room immediately exploded into activity. Men rushed toward exits. Others loaded weapons. Several guards moved to surround Luca. Amara stared in disbelief. Nobody looked panicked. Nobody looked surprised. As though this was just another Tuesday. As though being attacked by armed men was normal. Luca turned toward Antonio. "Take her to the safe room." Antonio nodded. Luca's eyes shifted to Amara. For a brief moment, the chaos around them disappeared. "Do exactly as Antonio says." Amara folded her arms. "You can't seriously expect me to hide in some bunker while everyone else—" A gunshot rang out. The bullet smashed through the window behind her. Glass exploded across the room. Amara screamed. Strong arms wrapped around her waist. The force knocked her to the floor. More gunfire followed. The room descended into chaos. Amara blinked through the shock. Luca was on top of her. His body shielding hers from the shattered glass. For a second, neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. Their faces were inches apart. Close enough for her to see the silver flecks in his eyes. Close enough to feel his breath. Then reality crashed back. Luca stood immediately and pulled her to her feet. "Now do you understand?" Amara couldn't speak. Her legs felt weak. That bullet could have hit her. It could have killed her. Antonio grabbed her hand. "We're leaving." This time she didn't resist. They rushed from the room. The mansion's hallways were filled with armed guards running in every direction. Some headed outside. Others positioned themselves near entrances. Everyone seemed to know exactly what to do. Everyone except Amara. Another explosion rocked the building. Dust drifted from the ceiling. She nearly lost her balance. Antonio steadied her. "This way." They descended a narrow staircase hidden behind a bookshelf. The entrance closed behind them. Darkness swallowed everything. Only small lights along the walls illuminated the underground passage. "What is this place?" Amara asked. "A safe route." "How many attacks like this have happened before?" Antonio didn't answer immediately. "Enough." That wasn't reassuring. Not even a little. They continued walking. The further underground they went, the more trapped Amara felt. Her entire life had changed in less than twenty-four hours. Yesterday she had been worried about rent, deadlines, and grocery shopping. Now she was hiding from assassins in a secret tunnel beneath a mafia mansion. Nothing made sense anymore. Eventually they reached a large steel door. Antonio entered a code. Several locks clicked open. The door slowly swung inward. The room beyond looked more like a luxury apartment than a bunker. There were sofas. Televisions. A kitchen. Bedrooms. Enough supplies to survive for months. Amara stared. "You people are insane." Antonio almost smiled. "We prefer prepared." The door sealed behind them. For the first time since the attack began, silence filled the room. Amara sank onto a sofa. Her hands were trembling. She looked down and noticed tiny cuts across her skin from the broken glass. Suddenly everything became too much. Her father's death. The mafia. The marriage. The attack. The fear. The tears came before she could stop them. She lowered her head and cried. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just quietly. Like someone whose entire world had collapsed. Antonio looked uncomfortable. Painfully uncomfortable. As though he had no idea what to do with a crying woman. He awkwardly handed her a box of tissues. Amara almost laughed through her tears. Hours passed. The gunfire above gradually faded. Then stopped completely. Nobody spoke much. Nobody knew what to say. Finally, the heavy door opened. Every person in the room stood instantly. Luca entered. His black suit was stained with blood. Amara's breath caught. Blood. So much blood. Her eyes widened. "Are you hurt?" The question escaped before she could stop it. Luca seemed surprised. Very surprised. He glanced down at himself. "It's not mine." Relief flooded through her. The realization irritated her immediately. Why was she relieved? She barely knew him. Luca removed his jacket and handed it to one of the guards. "Is it over?" Antonio asked. "For now." The answer wasn't comforting. Amara stood. "For now?" Luca met her gaze. "The Romano family wanted to send a message." "And?" "They succeeded." Fear twisted inside her. "What message?" Luca walked closer. Not threateningly. Not aggressively. Just calmly. Deliberately. "The war has begun." The words hung heavily in the air. Amara stared at him. A war. People were dying. Families were attacking each other. And somehow she was trapped in the middle of it. "Because of me?" The question came out barely above a whisper. Luca's expression softened slightly. "No." A pause. "This war was coming long before you arrived." Amara looked away. She wasn't convinced. None of this would've happened if her father hadn't named her heir. If she hadn't walked into that mansion. If she hadn't existed. Luca seemed to read her thoughts. "Stop blaming yourself." She looked back at him. "You don't know what I'm thinking." "No." His eyes held hers. "But I know guilt when I see it." Silence stretched between them. For the first time, she noticed how exhausted he looked. The shadows beneath his eyes. The tension in his shoulders. The weight he carried. Then she remembered the blood on his clothes. People had died tonight. People he probably knew. People who worked for him. Yet he was still standing. Still leading. Still protecting everyone around him. Including her. The realization unsettled her. Because the more she learned about Luca De Santis, the harder it became to decide whether he was a monster... Or the only thing standing between her and the monsters outside. Then Luca reached into his pocket and removed a small silver object. His expression turned cold. Dangerously cold. He placed it on the table. Amara looked down. It was a bullet. A single bullet. Wrapped around it was a folded piece of paper. Antonio opened the note. His face immediately darkened. "What is it?" Amara asked. Nobody answered. "Antonio." Slowly, he handed her the paper. Amara unfolded it. The message contained only seven words. The daughter dies before the wedding. The paper slipped from her fingers. And for the first time, she truly understood that someone out there wanted her dead.
