ATHENA’s POV,
As soon as I pick the call, her voice filters in.
“Mum,” I call out, trying to make my voice as calm as possible.
“Grace tell me you are in the hospital,” she says, “how careless could you be? How is the baby?”
“The baby is fine, mum,” I manage to answer despite the lump in my throat. I thought she would come running the moment she heard.
“That’s very good,” she says after a few seconds of silence, “I spoke with Stefan and he is very busy at the moment. I will ask the driver to bring you and Grace home. Until then, make sure you take some rest and don’t move around too much.”
“Mum,” I cut her off again, I cannot help it, "I almost had a miscarriage,” I tell her, “I was bleeding so much,”
“That’s why I told you to rest until the driver gets there,” my mother in law replies, no iota of panic from her. My chest tightens at the realization of that. She doesn’t care and she is not even hiding it.
“You can not lose that baby, Athena.” She advises, “that’s your cheat card for being in the Hallow house. Do you hear me?”
“Yes, ma”
“Good. I will send the driver now,”
Before I can say anything else, the lines go dead but the silence becomes louder.
She has never cared and she has never tried to hide it, same as my father in law but I expected more from them. I am carrying their grandchild but they—
I let out another sigh as the lump in my throat threatens to burst through my airways. Can I even blame them? Even Stefan does not even care. Every single day, he has something to do.
At the thought of that, my mind wanders to the call earlier and my heart skips a beat. I don’t wait. I pick up my phone again and dial Gemini’s phone but it is switched off. The fear intensifies. Maybe I was not mistaken, maybe the two of them were together after all.
The realization makes my chest hurt. Why would they be together? What relationship do they have? The only time I have seen them converse is when my parents come to the house. How—
The door pushes open and Grace steps in, pulling me out of my train of thoughts.
“I couldn’t get the boss,” she says, “so I called the madam,”
“It’s okay,” my voice is hoarse and I can hardly believe it’s fine. Just tell the doctor that I will like to be discharged please,”
“But he said—
“Stefan and I will come back tomorrow to hear what he has to say,”
The lie tastes foreign on my lips but I had to say it anyways. If he isn’t available, I will come on my own but right now, I need to leave this place before I lose my mind.
“Okay, Luna” she answers and leaves the room immediately.
I press my head against the pillow and close my eyes, not wanting the tears to fall. I refuse to cry, I refuse to let anything make me cry. I should be used to everyone by now, this is not new.
Stefan is just with her for business, father’s company partners with Hallow holdings. I have told myself this lie for a long time that I have actually come to believe it.
Stefan, my first love and the only man that I have loved all my life. I don’t know where I got it wrong but I don’t like what’s happening. He should be here, with me and for me.
I hear a familiar voice from outside and I put my eyes open, wanting to know if I actually heard correctly. Then the voice comes again, almost unmistakable.
My heart skips as I gently pull my body off the bed and begin to slowly walk towards the door.
“Yes, doctor.” I hear the voice again, “she is pregnant,”
I stop in my tracks as my hand grabs the doorknob. That cannot be Stefan's voice, can it?
Maybe it’s someone who sounds like him.
How long?” I hear a female ask.
“Three months,” the voice responds again and this time, I don’t think. I should pull the door open and step out. I come face to face with my husband and my junior sister. My stomach does that thing that makes me feel like I am about to lose consciousness. My eyes travel over the two of them, the way he is holding onto her waist like she is the most fragile thing on the face of the earth. The way Gemini is leaning into his embrace like he is the only thing that matters.
For a moment, I close my eyes and open it again. Maybe it’s just my mind conjuring the image of him because I want him here.
“Stefan?” I call out his name, almost unwillingly and the two of their heads turn to me. I take a step back as his eyes open wide for a moment. He is the one. That’s my husband with my sister. This is the person I have been calling for a while now and he— pain shoots through my entire body as I cling to the door for support. What the heck is happening right now?
“Baby?” Gemini calls, even leaning closer to him, “can you listen to the doctor? He is talking to you,”
I can’t even believe my ears. Is she being serious right now?
“Yes, doctor.” Stefan turns away from me and my heart shatters again. What the heck is happening? Maybe I am still sleeping? Maybe I am still unconscious.
“Luna?” A voice calls beside me and I turn my head to see Grace and doctor Seth beside me. Tears blur my vision almost instantly but I can see the surprised look on her face when she sees Stefan with Gemini.
“Is your husband here yet?” Seth’s voice pulls me out of my head.
“He—
“No,” I blurt, cutting grace off. It feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest and crushed into a million pieces. This is the man I love, the man I can not leave without in the arms of another woman.
I open my mouth a few times but no words come out afterall. I don’t even know what to say at this point.
“Mrs Athena?” Seth’s voice pulls me out of my head again, “is your husband here yet,”
“No doc,” my voice comes out, barely a whisper, “he—
I begin to stagger into the room, wanting to get away from the sight that looks like my worst nightmare. Stefan doesn’t even give me another look, like I am not even there. Gemini is holding onto him like he belongs to her. My chest hurts so bad and I feel like dying. The tears refuse to fall, I only keep staggering back until I almost crash to the ground but he is fast enough to grab onto my waist and pull me closer—that is the last thing I remember.
